TPM on DVD ?? - I hate this but.

I just got this from Digital Bayou;

======================================================================
'STAR WARS: EPISODE ONE' HITS DVD...BUT ONLY OVERSEAS
Even though 20th Century Fox hasn't announced the release date for the
American release of Star Wars: Episode One, other countries are starting to
receive notice of the film's street date. But for those curious fans,
Digital Bayou has found what appears to be German website that is currently
prebooking George Lucas' newest on DVD. Dolby Digital 5.1 audio and a
2.35:1 Anamorphic (16:9) Widescreen transfer are the basics offered on the
disc releasing on May 19, 1999 (exactly one year after the U.S. theatrical
release date), but that isn't a definite determination of what American
audiences can expect once Fox decides to go public with their domestic
plans. All fans can do is wait...or log onto the e-commerce site offering
the foreign title for a sneak peak.

Star Wars: Episode One - The Phantom Menace foreign DVD site:

Anyone read German?

... But May 19,1999 as a release... is that suppose to be May 19,2000 - Must be a Y2K bug.

I just found this new press release on the web:

=============================================
=============================================
SAN MATEO, CA - December, 1999
George Lucas announced today that for the upcoming re-release of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, American citizens wishing to view the film will not only have to pay $125, but will also be slashed with knives along the face, arms and legs, before entering the theater. "We feel that our American fans are willing to put up with just about anything we throw at them," said George Lucas, head of Lucasfilm, the films producer, who has been involved in the production of most of the highest grossing films ever made.

This came shortly after the announcement that German Star Wars fans will be allowed to purchase this film on DVD on the film's one year anniversary. "We know our US fans want this movie on DVD. Hell, it's probably one of the most request titles, after Star Wars, of course. But we just want to make them wait a little more. They're such suckers!" boasted a proud Lucas. "We're just so glad that DVD has region coding technology, so that all those US folks won't be able to view this disc, even if they do manage to pay for a copy."

International citizens living in the US will not be subjected to the same humiliation that US moviegoers will have to put with. Just bring proof of foreign citizenship, and the theaters will disable the sharp needles that have been installed in the theater's seats.

Lucasfilm is certain that even with these drastic measures, people will still flock to the theaters in droves, hoping to get a glimpse of this extravaganza of cinema technology.

Maybe I won't go see TPM this weekend after all.

Say, Cabdriver Taximan, do you have a link for that information

I'm Norwegian, and I can definetly confirm that the site in question is indeed Swedish. I wouldn't trust their shit for a second. The Swedish are notorious liars, and they are selling the disc for 299 krones, which is roughly $40.

I have sent them a mail in swedish regarding this disc, and I really look forward to a possible reply to where they dug up this information.

I'll let you guys know when I have an update on this baby

Lassie,

Thanks for taking the ball and trying to follow up on this. It made me kinda sick to post it, but I felt I had to.

Taxi,

You hit the nail on the head with that post, or should I say the Needle up the a$$

David.

I've read over at Rebelscum.com that the only version of TPM to be released next year will be the VHS copy.
