Man, I didn't realize this wasn't popular knowledge already.

You'll probably also be glad to hear that Winds of War and The Thorn Birds is in-the-works too, though none of the three have a release date named yet (may not even be this year).

It would be a crime if this was. It was filmed for fullscreen 1.33:1 ratio, as befitting it's status as a television miniseries.

If they top-and-bottom crop it, or if they tilt-and-scan it, then no purchase here. NO OAR = NO SALE!

really?

well, thats kind of a letdown. Pan and scan blows. At least there is dolby digital 5.1 tho. Too bad bout them not being forward thinking enough to film it in widescreen originally.

1.33:1 is the correct aspect ratio. This is an older mini-series filmed long before widescreen TV programs began to appear. After all not every film in the history of cinema needs to be widescreen. The 1.33:1 aspect ratio has its place.

The Doctor is 100% correct...Shogun is being released exactly as it was designed to be seen. It was made-for-TV and they never ever considered a theatrical release (not for a 10-hour miniseries!).

The DVD is coming out at the correct aspect ratio. The sound was remixed to 5.1 using the same techniques and company that has in the past done Singing In The Rain and is currently doing Becket. I'm sure a 2.0 Mono track will be on there as well, to perfectly duplicate the original viewing experience. Except Reagan won't be in office.
