Straw Dogs Criterion

I got mine. A perfect film and supplements. It was marked as "Available for a Limited Time". Anyone knows for how long this will be available?

Not sure how long it'll be available... but it must be due to licensing issues. This is certainly an unprecedented labelling by Criterion, perhaps in reaction to those who felt burnt by waiting to buy Salo or Dead Ringers or the Tati films, etc etc.....

Since they're making an obvious effort to notify the public about this film, I guess the rights must up pretty soon..... haven't heard a time frame, but maybe that that year figure is good...???...

asphodel, where you at?

I think that Mulvaney said that it will probably be gone within a year. It all has something to do with MGM getting the rights. This article was posted on the Criterion boards in the fall. It pertains to Straw Dogs and the three "newer" Hitchcock's. Sorry to keep you waiting Marq...

"NOV. 26 | Buena Vista Television has inked a five-year deal with MGM Home Entertainment for exclusive DVD distribution of 66 classic films including Prizzi's Honor, Notorious, The Flamingo Kid, Rebecca and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
Most of the films were previously released on DVD through Anchor Bay Entertainment, the former distributor for Buena Vista TV. With that deal ending, Buena Vista approached MGM about distributing the titles. Buena Vista Home Entertainment typically releases videos for movies from Disney and its various movie arms.
"For a company like us, these titles have greater value," MGM Home Entertainment Group president and COO David Bishop. "We have such a strong presence in the theatrical library business. They saw the value of having the titles with a library. We have a great deal of focus on that category." MGM distributes home video titles from its own 4,000-title library and the library of Orion, Goldwyn and PolyGram.
MGM will begin releasing the films on DVD in late 2003. The first nine movies slated include Prizzi's Honor, Duel in the Sun, Straw Dogs and Silkwood. The rest of the films will be released on video by the end of 2004, Bishop said.
MGM plans to create new extras for the DVDs and add its own touch to separate the new product from the versions already on the market. Bishop said he's not too concerned about competing with product already in release. "We don't think it makes a meaningful difference because new people are entering the marketplace all the time," he said. "Secondly, we feel we're very good at exploiting library product."
MGM will also distribute eight Buena Vista movies-of-the week titles.
The distribution deal covers the U.S. and Canada."

I read a really good review for this set on the Onion this afternoon, and coupled with the oop thing I'll probably pick this up in the coming weeks, while the price is relatively low.

But I also have to get Grand Illusion, and the Doinel Box, and the Hitchcock box, and the Miyazaki set, and I just can't straight out my priorities!!!

Yeah. I've seen it about four times.. Once on the cinema screen which was very exciting. I just keep putting off buying it for no good reason. If only every day was my birthday.

If MGM is getting the rights to Straw Dogs, does that mean another version out?
