I have a dvd that skips weird
Ok, I have a dvd that skips. However it never skips at the same place, even when it skips if I go back a little bit and replay that small scene it doesn't skip the 2nd time. It looks dirty, but it's not something that I can easily take off by rubbing a little bit with a tissue. I'm not even sure if it's dirt or if it's scratches, it's kind of like small dots that are organised as a big ring on the disk but I can't take them off like normal dust.
Is it okay to rub with water? Also is it possible to have scratches that are causing skips but never twice at the same place (in other words sometimes the dvd player reads them sometimes not?). Or is it safe to assume that it's only dirt? I also have heard that there's a product that is supposed to eliminate scratches. Anyways from my description, what do you think is the problem and what should I do? Thanx |

You can clean CDs with water, but I'm not sure about DVDs cos they have two layers and might get water trapped in there..
You can get stuff that fills scratches (not sure what tho) so that the surface is flat. But it might be cheaper to by another copy. Have you tried the disc on another player? |

There have been numerous threads on the subject of polishing and cleaning of scratched or dirty discs. I suggest doing a search.
There are several polishing/cleaning solutions that I've recommended listed in some of these posts. Search on scratch / polish / cleaning. Cleaning with water will be ok. Just moisten a cloth and rub gently in a radial pattern from the center. Do not use a solution containing alcohol or ammonia. This sounds more of a software problem than hardware.... |

I've heard of people actually soaking DVDs (and LDs) in a soap solution to help clean the disc. The disc is NOT left in the solution for any extended period of time but rather "dunked" (fully submersed) and then gently wiped clean.
I'll see if I can find some other discussion about this and post links later. ![]() Peace.... P.S. Also moving this to Software.... ![]()
