Poltergeist SE?

Is this film ever getting a much deserved Special edition? I was watching TCM today and they had an awesome making of feature that they aired before the film. Has there been rumors of a SE in the works? It's just kinda weird that they already have a making of feature shot but they didn't stick it on the current DVD release.

Also how's the current barebones? Does it look good?

Thanks

The LD probably had what you watched the other night.

There are quite a few scratches and occassional film grain evident on the print that was used. The transfer leaves the image with a dated feel, unfortunate for such a wonderful film. A digital restoration would really make this film shine. As for the sound,
the 5.1 soundtrack is aggressive but limited in its low end. A reworking of the soundtrack is necessary, and maybe even a DTS track could be created for an upcoming SE disc. You never know?

I wish I had a laser disk player. Thanks for the description of the transfer. I think I still might go ahead and pick up the barebones. I don't mind double dipping on a great movie like this.

I'd love to have a Special Edition with the kick-ass "E! True Hollywood Story".

there was a SE planned for this title, but last i heard, and this was for real, amblin stopped it, just canceled it out of the blue. ONe story i heard was it may have been over the whole directors "thing" that went on, i hope not, that would have been pretty stupid, and this is a title that would make a great SE. From what i recall it was supposed to come out around the time when the gremlins and gremlins 2 SE came out, who knows if they are planning to try it again, i wish this could have been asked at the warner chat instead of 16 questions about the batman anim box sets and the adv. of robin hood. sheeeeeeeeeeeesh

I would love a special edition of Poltergeist!!

I had always assumed there wasn't one because I thought no one associated with it wanted anything to do with it(due to rumors of the curse etc.) but after seeing the excellent E! story on it, I guess that's not true (except for maybe Spielberg and Hooper)

I'd love to see the deleted/alternate scenes that are hinted at in the liner notes of the soundtrack and in the trailer.

BrianofJ: As others have mentioned there is some flaws on the current dvd, but you should still check it out, just for the widescreen transfer(the full screen is horribaly panned and scanned)

If there is a special edition coming sometime my only hope is that Spielberg is kept as far away from it as possible. If he thought having kids and guns in the same scene in E.T. should be removed, what would be left of this movie after he got through with it...........

BTW does anyone know who owns the right to this? MGM obviously still owns the rights to the sequels, but I thought Warner now has the rights to the first one?

Thanks, I'll definetely pick up the barebones, it's only like 15 bucks.

Also I heard that rumor about the directing debate as one of the reasons the SE was delayed. I have to admit, while I was watching that making of documentary on TCM the other day, every time I saw someone giving direction Spielberg was the one doing it. They didn't really show Hooper doing much at all.

Also one thing about Spielberg, if he was to go back and do something with the movie, I'm pretty sure he would still put out the original version to like he did with ET. Because you know fans everywhere would go nuts!

Anyone else like the sequels? I thought they weren't near as bad as some people have said. Sure the original is the best and a classic but the sequels aren't half bad either.

Also the clown puppet thing still freaks me out!

Hopefully Warner is just waiting for the upcoming sequels release by MGM. Maybe the'll suprise us with a 2 disc special edition. It's a long shoot, but The Color Purple 2 disc was announced only about a month before it's release, hopefully Warner will suprise us agian.
