Disney Ups Their Platinum Releases

Hopefully I'm not posting a second thread on this. I just read it over at The Digital Bits

Quote:
...the studio revealed that it plans to accelerate its Platinum Edition DVD release plans. Part of the reason for this is that the company expects HD-DVD to be available by 2007, and they want to get all their catalog animated titles out on standard DVD by then (presumably so they can then do it all over again in HD). By accelerating these plans, we mean that the studio now intends to release their Platinum catalog at a rate of two films a year, one in March and one on October. Also, they now plan to leave them available for two years at a time, and then take them off the market for only five years (as opposed to the ten-year moratorium they'd previously announced). And they've added several more titles to their eventual 2-disc Platinum line-up, including Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, Fantasia and Peter Pan.

The specific release schedule is TBA, but here is the new list of Platinum titles on the way:

Snow White (released 2001)
Beauty and the Beast (released 2002)
The Lion King (coming 10/7)

TBA:

Aladdin
The Little Mermaid
Bambi
Cinderella
Lady and the Tramp
101 Dalmatians
The Jungle Book
Sleeping Beauty
Pinocchio
Fantasia
Peter Pan

I'm glad Disney is making this move. Making us wait a year for a single movie I always thought was kinda stupid. And a ten year moritorium was even more stupid. Of course this means that Disney is anticipated re-re-releasing them in the HD format when that becomes available so the question is....do you buy now..or wait for the new format?

No, you're not. Actulally, it's the third. Being the resident Disney fanatic, I beat you to the punch the day Disney announced the speedup to investors and was copied three days later. Sorry, but there's the link to my thread if you want to talk about it there. I do agree with everything you said, though (except the question of if we should wait for HD: absolutely not, I'm buying these ASAP!) I can see why they tried the old schedule business-wise. Still, this is VERY good news that will benifit both us fans and the company!

Okay I officially feel old.

The Little Mermaid has already been released but I think Disney already put it on moritorium. You may still be able to find a copy some where which should hold you off until the Platinum comes out. If they are doubling up on the releases per year I don't think it will still take five more years until it comes out but I may be wrong.
I usually am.

I think Little Mermaid now should be coming by 2005 at the latest (and probably, the earliest). I've heard rumblings of an IMAX re-release for January '05, a la Lion King and next January's Aladdin. So, presumably the DVD would be coming the fall of 2005. Which is better than the fall of 2008, but still a ways off.

Glad I got the Limited Issue as my freebie with Snow White. Awesome movie, one of my favorites!

I noticed that Hunchback of Notre Dame wasn't on that list and i know the the dvd came out last year but I held off getting it thinking a Platinum Edition was coming down the pipes sometime.

Is a Platinum Edition of Hunchback of Notre Dame coming or should i go ahead a get the version already out?
