Equilibrium .. good blind buy?

So I've been reading some mixed reviews about 'Equilibrium'.. and from what I've read, there's some really great action sequences in the film, but some 'boring' moments also.

Going into this movie, I would expect some dark, gritty, futuristic action (a la Matrix, Minority Report, Blade Runner). But I am hoping that the non-action sequences are not nearly as boring as the final act of A.I.

Any thoughts? Is 'Equilibrium' action-packed enough to satisfy expectations? Is the DVD a good blind buy for those with a penchant for sci-fi with a darker tone?

My roommate liked it a lot and is buying the DVD....I thought the movie had some high points and some nice ideas, but didn't really do much for me...I thought Reign of Fire was better (Christain Bale comparison) and my roommate hated that.....so I suggest renting first....I can also imagine it looking really cheapo and campy on DVD....It was really washed out in the theater....lot's of grays...

It was pretty cheesey. I didn't think the action scenes were cool enough to make up for everything else.

At the average price of $20 for this thing I'd say rent it first.

I was lucky to check it out in the arthouse theater when it got its 2-week theatrical run, and after seeing all of the extreme hype coming out of CHUD and AICN, I was expecting this to be one damn good film.

I didn't think this movie lived up to the extreme hype it got at all.

I think it's pretty sad that Kurt Wimmer basically ripped off Farenheight 451 just so he could have a bunch of cool gun scenes (And "cool" is seriously an understatement - wow).

The story moved like molasses. It was only 100 mins long, but it felt like 300. Probably half of the wasted time in the film was spent with Christian Bale staring into a mirror with a look of angst on his face.

What also pissed me off was an underutilized Sean Bean. That's a crime in its own right. He was in the movie for about 5 minutes, give or take. Same with Emily Watson... ugh.

But the action scenes (Only 3 of them) were absolutely berserk... the final fight near the climax of the film was nuts. Same with the final, FINAL fight (Trying to avoid spoilers here :p) which had me screaming like a geek in the theater. If you've seen the film, I'll just reference it as the gun fist fight between the bad guy and Bale after the sword stuff.

I would reccomend renting this one - it would be a definite purchase if it didn't drag so much in the middle segments of the film. If you're looking for a hardcore action movie, though, look elsewhere... Equilibrium is definitely not that. I would make a guess and say only about 15 mins of the film was used for action sequences, with 10 of them at the ending.

Nam,

Spoiler (Highlight or Triple Click to Read):
Are you talking about the scene were Bale uses the butt of his guns, cracking helmets left and right? That was pretty instense.

Well, that wasn't the one I was thinking of specifically, but that one was pretty sweet, yeah.

I was talking about the scene where Bale and that British dude (Name is passing me right now) start going at it after Bale slashes Taye Diggs' face. You know, that part when both of them are punching at each other and knocking their guns out of aim.

I think the line right before it started was "Be careful, Preston, you're treading on my dreams!", or something like that.

That was just so cool.

Another great part about that fight was the musical cue that kicked in beforehand, when the blood starts dripping off of Bale's sword - it had this really synthesized feel to it. Klaus Badelt went overdrive on the score, and it's too bad that there isn't a soundtrack CD yet...

I picked it up at Circuit City today...watched it, loved it. Ya know...the "slow" moments really didn't turn me off at all...maybe I have thick skin...or maybe I'm too stupid to notice when something is supposed to be boring (if so, ingnorance is bliss ). I really it liked the whole thing, for one, the moment it ended, I felt like watching it again...for me, that's the sign of a really good movie.

I saw this in the theaters when it was out that afternoon, and loved it.

I went to Best Buy today, and they only had one copy left (whether this was all they got in in total, or just what remained after massive sales, I don't know). Watched it as soon as I got home, and loved it even more. Christian Bale was almost a god in that. Just remarkable. The slow parts didn't bore me at all, and the action scenes make most video game gun battles (I'm lookin' at you, Dante, yeah) look positively tame. I can't want to watch it again later tonight with the director's commentary.

A seriously underrated movie.

outta five.

To my fellow Canadians out there, did anyone manage to find this anywhere? No store I went to had any. I asked a lady at FutureShop and she said they were "in transit" and will be in Saturday morning. But I just looked on some sites and it's saying a May 20th release, next Tuesday. I hope FS was right.

I just watched this last night, and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Great gun fights, nice twists...nice visual FX. Not the ending I was expecting, but enjoyable to anyone that likes dystopian-themed films...

Got it from Netflix.

Ended up hitting the fast forward button pretty early.

Not worth buying.

Best thing about it is the trailer for KILL BILL.

I just watched this last night. It is a really cool movie, definetly like Farenheit 451. It is worth a rent, if not a buy.

This is only my second blind DVD buy, and I like it. Nothing breathtaking, but entertaining for us sci-fi freaks.

Here's how I sum it up:

Equilibrium = 1984 + Logan's Run + Fahrenheit 451 + Matrix fighting.

You know, I love the people that rip on movies for "ripping off" other movies. A lot of people have mentioned Farenheit 451, but where's Orwell's 1984 or THX-1138? Anyway, listen to the commentary on this disc and you'll see that Wimmer was trying to give his own take on these films - he mentions these and a few more. There's not a story that hasn't been told already. I bet if half these people got out there and made their own films, they'd be ripping someone off too...

As far as the film, I though it was great! Caught it in the theater, and couldn't wait for DVD. Although my player pauses at 29:30, weird glitch. Tried it on two different discs. This happening to anyone else?

And mind you this film was made on a budget. Great commentaries expand on this. How the first gun battle (dark room) was actually black leader. Awesome! I thought it worked great! I'll probably watch this once a month.

Hey, I liked it. That doesn't make my little equation above any less valid. And there's no need to listen to the commentary to see the parallels...if you're fairly well read (or well watched).

Derivative movies can still be fun: look at Star Wars for example.

Rented it on a blind decision and...

LOVED IT!!!!

But I would recommend a rental first, just to make sure that you feel the same.

I am going to buy it used, because I find that it's too expensive for a new buy.

I rented this over the weekend, and I thought it was pretty good. But it's not worth buying, IMHO, as it has only a 5-minute featurette in addition to two commentary tracks.

I found the story a bit too predictable, and the movie doesn't have as much replay value except for the gunfight scenes. Appearances by Sean Bean and Emily Watson were way too brief.

Anybody else notice the brief apperance by Dominic Purcell, who played the lead character in the John Doe TV series? It was interesting to hear the director talk about wanting to cast Dominic in the lead role for the movie instead of Christian Bale, but the studios didn't want to because he was considered an "unknown" at the time.

Just saw it yesterday and let's say I wasn't impressed. It all looks pretty cheap and the gunfights before the Showdown mostly looked pretty stupid... the final showdown was pretty cool and made up for a little of the boring and dragging parts in the middle... Overall a decent b-movie with a pretty dumb plot and some ok action scenes... I say give it a rent first, cause I seriously felt like some sort of dumbed down version of the Matrix...

I liked the movie a lot, but I've also talked to a few people that really hated it. It has a few plot loopholes, and some of the plot is pretty slow-moving, but I think it was definitely worth it just for the awesome fighting;

Spoiler (Highlight or Triple Click to Read):
That scene where Bale "focused" his emotions while attached to the machine was unreal, unreal indeed.

This is a little off topic....

I noticed that Dimension Home Video for the majority of there DVD releases dont include Trailers of the movie that your watching on the DVD your holding in your hand. But they put Trailers for other movies. Go figure.

The two DVD's that come to mind right now.....Equilibrium and The Legend of Drunken Master.

Why they do this??? Who knows.

Anyways........ Can anyone tell me what other DVD does have the Equilibrium Trailer????????

Peace Out!!!!

Just wanted to add to this thread and throw my support towards the film. I Netflixed it, showed it at my weekly movie night, and it was a huge it. All the attendees (myself included) are planning on picking it up in the next few weeks. I'm ordering my copy online, seeing as how many people are having trouble finding it in stores.

This movie is what Matrix Reloaded should have been.

I just finished watching this movie and all I can say is this: rent (like I did) but do not buy this movie. You'll be wasting your money. Why? It's very laughable in many of the scenes. I will say that the movie is not a complete waste for there are some saving moments. Taye Diggs looked liked he hated the script so he just went absolutely crazy with his role. A lot of the dialogue was just atrocious. The "gun kata" and the whole "gun martial arts" idea was a bit much. Interesting how the movie tried to explain that it was based on geometry and what not, but still, a bit far fetched. And what is with the get ups these "clerics" wear? How Matrix can you get. Christian Bale sported the whole "blank stare expressionless face" almost through the whole movie. Slap some glasses on him and voila!- Neo. The obvious influences from other films past just didn't do right with me. I did like the idea that emotion and all things that ellicit it were seen as the cause of war and thus outlawed. But, the representation of this on the culture in the film didn't work. I really wanted to like this movie but with all the bad dialogue and the "hodgepodge" feel of other movies mixed in, well....let the buyer beware I suppose. But hey, if you like an action movie that TRIES to convey important social messages just to justify itself as more than a pretentious self gratifying testosterone infused flick, then this is right up your alley! Come to think of it, fuck me and my opinion. Buy the movie. Some people like it. You might to.

I decided to pass on this movie.. will probably catch it on cable somewhere in the future, but the high price, lack of features, and somewhat so-so reviews have soured me on this one for now.. oh well, I've bought enough in the past month to force me to hold off on purchases temporarily anyway

For one thing, Equilibrium was made before Matrix Reloaded ever got started, so any costume similarities are not Equilibrium's fault. In fact, if you listen to the commentary, you'll hear Wimmer tak about that. Secondly, Bale hada stony look for a reason: Either he had no emotion, or when he did he had to fight it. I thought he did a brilliant job, and it makes me wonder how much better the Matrix films might have been had Blae been given the role of Neo instead of Keanu.

Still, I stand by my love for Equilibrium. In the theater it was great, and it's gotten even better at home.
