Children of Dune directors cut?

well, i'm really excited about the new Dune miniseries DVD.

my only concern is that we're going to follow the same pattern as the first Dune--2 disc set, then eventually a 3 disc director's cut.

anyone think they'll follow the same plan?

*sigh* i hate double-dipping...

I was just about to post the same thing. I was lucky and didn't buy the first release of the first set. Now I'm warry to pick of the first release of this new set.

Does anybody know if this first CoD release is the exact runtime of the TV airing? The reviewer here couldn't say for sure.

From what I understand, the DVD of Children of Dune is the U.S. TV version. I really can't say if there will be a longer cut. If the director was happy with the broadcast version, then so am I. I do wish there were a few more extras, but it sounds like a good disc(s) otherwise.

The initial release of the first Dune miniseries was also the U.S. TV version. I think the director's cut was aired internationally, but I'm not sure.

Does anyone know if the version of CoD that aired on European TV contained material that wasn't in the U.S. version?

I am pretty sure that this release is the same running time as it was aired on SCI-FI.

There will also be a Director's Cut set w/ more supplements in the future so you will may have to DOUBLE-DIP if you can't stand waiting.

Grumble. I don't have TV so I haven't seen this yet, and I realy enjoyed the first part.

Now I have to wait for the special edition, and there's no telling when that's even coming out. Arrrrgh!

I havn't seen this yet but I'm dying to. I think if I find this version at a good price I will pick it up. As for the cover rt eww. They had a really nice one before they changed it (tvshow says they don't know which will show up at retail but you can see actual scans at dvdempire.com and it is indeed the ugly one!).

Just to clarify, are we sure that the second edition will be a longer cut? This would be the only thing hloding me back from getting the one out today.

There is plenty of rumors (or wishful thinking), but nothing official!

I’ve decided to wait. This (May 20) release looks too much like first release of Dune, so I am hoping for SE that will match SE of Dune in both packaging and content.

Video Store Magazine's March 30-April 5 edition gives us the answer. Next to a positive review of the upcoming bare-bones DVD release, a "Talent Talk" sidebar discusses the feature with the Director of the mini-series, Greg Yaitanes. He talks about how this is a family-driven story set against a science fiction background, and then the article goes on to say this:

"Given the family story line, it is perhaps fitting that the first disc set from Artisan Home Entertainment arrives May 20, just after Mother's Day. Fans who missed the Sci Fi Channel broadcast or just can't wait to have it will be pleased; for those who want a bundle of extras, a special edition is in the works for a subsequent release. 'The special edition that's in the works will have some great extras,' Yaitanes said. 'This is a quick fix for the fans and those who missed the broadcast. It's exactly what aired. I have so much to say in regards to Children of Dune. I'm dying to do a commentary, and hopefully [composer] Brian Tyler will do one in regards to the music.'"

Framing error in COD

They have cut off the top and bottom of the image in this DVD release. I have the original broadcast on VHS and there is about 10% missing from both the top and bottom of the screen. It is most noticable during the butterfly scene at the beginning of the second part. The wings of the butterfly are cut off at the top and the landing is cut off at the bottom.

I would hate to think this was intentional to provide more incentive to upgrade to the SE when it comes out....
