Just one

It's like sudden death overtime in the playoffs... there are no ties. There can be only one.

Your favorite movie of all time. I know it's hard and given the collections a lot of us have, it may be the impossible that I'm asking, but I'll ask it anyway...

In your humble opinion, what is the single greatest movie ever made and why.

(and I don't want to see "but it's a tie for me! I love Star Wars and Indiana Jones equally! Sudden death overtime, baby. Only one can win in this game)

Well you ask for our favorite movie but then you ask for the greatest movie ever made. My favorite movie is by no means the greatest movie ever made it's not even close it's just my favorite.

Highlander it's just a cool idea and a really well made movie with great acting. I like the flashbacks, the swordfighting, and the sense of lonliness you get from these characters who will live centuries (unless they lose their head of course) knowing that they will die violently. It also has some kick ass music by Queen.

Ameros Perros because of the raw emotions and great acting. The narrative structure is derivative of Tarantino, but what the hell. Also, I just love this movie.

My personal favorite movie of all time . . .

Tombstone

I could watch it over and over again, and have.

The new special edition with the added scenes isn't as good as the original (for me). I think the addition of Docs femme bitching about him going off with Wyatt wasn't needed and took away from her character (and a little from his too). Originally I had gotten the idea that she understood Doc and what he was doing, but that scene made it seem like she was allot more selfish.

Why it's my personal favorite.

Aside from the fact that this flick doesn't follow the truth about what happened there, which I would normally find to annoying to get over, the characters that it builds and the just plain cool scenes it delivers are perfectly done.

When Wyatt walks into that saloon and challenges the loudmouth dealer, man that was sweet, "Are you gonna do something, or just stand there and bleed?" - Priceless.

And, of course, there's Doc Holiday played perfectly by Val Kilmer. Every time he opens his mouth it's another classic quote, but the best is when Johnny Ringo is drunk and challenging the Earps in the street, "Isn't anyone here man enough to play for blood?" Doc Holiday, "I'm your Huckleberry." The sense I got from his character was that he knew he was going to die, and wanted to go out in a blaze of glory. Being a doctor he must have seen plenty of people die slowly and painfully laying in a hospital bed, that wasn't for him. He wanted to live his life by his rules until he died standing up. Whether or not he got his wish wasn't the point, the fact that he tried to was.

And seeing Jason Priestly play a sniveling little effeminate character works perfectly too, mostly because I think he just played himself. It would have been nice to see him get splattered, but nothings perfect.

I could have done without Dana Delany playing Josephine Marcus, not that she's a bad actress, but I don't find her that attractive and the part called for an exceptionally hot chick.

There are other faults to the picture, but all in all it was, and continues to be, very entertaining. There are other flicks that make you think more, are more personal, etc..., but this one I can watch over and over again so that brings it to the top of the list for me.

But, ask me again tomorrow and I may have a different answer.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is mine. Even the Special Edition wasn't messed up too badly.

I absolutely LOVE the Hoth sequence. It is one of my favorite scenes of all time.

I like the message about change for the better NOT being impossible. Great acting, writing and directing.

Second Choice:

NETWORK

In 1976 it was almost a fantasy film. Now it is reality. Great black comedy and "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

Third Choice:

AMELIE

Wonderful characters, execution of story and brilliant Production and Cinematography. I love watching it.

Fourth Choice:

NASHVILLE

Robert Altman's ensemble masterpiece. Don't need to say anymore.

Fifth and last choice:

Not a film but a Concert: GEORGE STRAIT Live for the last time at the Huston Astrodome.

awesome, kimfair!

Anyway, for me? Very very tough decision, as I love film. Movies, even. It may change from day to day, but today? I'm in a Harold and Maude mood.

The movie that I have watched relentlessly over they years, even if it's on Fox in Pan and Scan WITH commercials is Predator.

I have watched this movie so many times that it isn't funny. I know it's not a fair question because we all have a bunch of favorites, but if someone said you're can only take one movie with you, the rest are gonna burn in the fire, it would have to be Predator. Excellent characters, memorable lines and the jungle sounds blew me away. When the DTS version came out, "Painless" made me realize why I spent so much on that subwoofer and the audio details were incredible. Constant bird and bug chatter, but when the Predator was nearby it went dead silent.

Damn it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Now I'm thinking about it. I guess I'll have to watch it tonight!

and mlemmond, you're right.... my mistake. Your favorite movie hands down. I know that Predator isn't the greatest movie ever made, but it's one that I don't think I could ever NOT have in my collection.

Boy is it tough to put just one film over the top of all others. I can't even do a top ten list.

So today, with out thinking too much since that would get in the way, I'll just say my favorite most watched movie is probaby Doctor Strangelove

I can't find a single thing wrong with that movie. It's excellently acted, the cinematography is amazing, and it has a Kar-Wai trademarked memorable story. I've owned it for a week now and I've already watched it three times.

Apocalypse Now.
A work of sheer brilliance.
Flawed and incomplete (reminds me of Gogol's Lost Souls in that way), yet incredibly moving and dense in layers of meaning and symbolism.
Tremendously powerful, appalling, thrilling, horrible, and beautiful.
It is truly a work of art.
I have seen it 20-30 times, at least.

An incredibly tough choice but if I had to choose one it would be Local Hero. Runners up would have to be Star Wars IV, The Fisher King and Hannah & Her Sisters.

Although it changes frequently, West Side Story.

It's filled with talent, with good cinematography, memorable characters, and well done singing/dancing. And it was a good adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Although not too resembling, you could see a hint of the story in there.

I can normally never pick just ONE movie, but I have forced myself to do it for this.

I would go with Lord of the Rings.
If I can only have one, it would be Fellowship.

Obviously haven't seen Return yetm so I can't say for certain if I will appreciate the entire saga(though I really can't see it being bad).

Other choices: Star Wars, Indiana jones, seven samurai....I cant stop thinking of so many of my faves, so I will stop here.

I often say other ones, but for the most part when people ask what my favorite movie is I say Batman, so I'll go with that. Some quick reasons:

Tim Burton's directing, the look of the city, and the art conception was just amazing.

Danny Elfman's amazing score.

Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson's AMAZING performances... perfect.

Finally... I was a major comic book fan and collector when I was younger, and Batman was my favorite character. I still read the graphic novels.

Without a doubt; Citizen Kane.

Just the grand scope of the movie alone wins my vote, but it is so much more. To tell a story where your emotions range from pity, to triumph, to hatred, and finally back to pity for the character of Charles Foster Kane.

Along with that, the fascinating camera angles and the way scenes are shot.

To know that this was loosely based on the life of William Randolph Hearst, possibly one of the most influential men at the time of its release, only increases my devotion to this film.

And it goes so much deeper.

Orson Welles created a masterpiece at the age of 24, and yet it was a sacrifice that haunted him the rest of his life.

Shortly after its release, he was told, "Quit son, you'll never do anything better."

I can't imagine how it would be to peak at such a young age.

To me, this movie is perfection. Great acting, great cinematography, great script, and a ending that still holds me cold everytime I see it.

It fills me with sorrow for a character and actor like that.

I hope that this explains mine.

Out of all the films that I've seen so far, if I had to pick one today it would have to be:

P A K E E Z A H "The Pure of Heart"

Here is a beautiful description from IMDB.com as to why I love this film so much:

"Without question, this film has to be one of the greatest ........ in cinematic history. I have watched it too many times to remember, and each time it is like I am seeing the film for the first time.

Where does one begin?

Meena Kumari's central performance is undoubtedly one of the finest of her career, followed closely by Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam and Phool aur Pathar. Each movement and nuance of her performance, makes any other Bollywood heroine pale into significance. Her masterly interpretation of Kathak coupled with her grace, tragic vulnerability and poetic delivery of Urdhu, is like nothing ever seen on the bollywood screen.

Pakeezah is perhaps the most stylized interpretation of the human condition; the photography, sumptuous cinematography and mise en scene, are so charged with symbolism and meaning, that the viewer is left breathless.

Naushads music, is unsurpassed, his knowledge of the music of the courtesan gharanas is incredible, and the way in which he punctuates the narrative with dark atmospheric motifs and overwhelming romantic melodies is indeed remarkable.

My only advice to anyone who seriously enjoys the spectacle of total cinema, should watch this epic mediation on life and art. "

My favorite is Federico Fellini's "8 1/2"

"If the mark of modernism in art is self-reference, 8 1/2 surely goes beyond any predecessor in having itself as its subject. Before 1963 Federico Fellini had, by his count, made seven and a half films; hence "8 1/2" is like an opus number: this is film #8 1/2 in the Fellini catalogue. Self-referential enough, but only the beginning. 8 1/2 is a film about making a film, and the film that is being made is 8 1/2. Notice how everything Guido says about the film he is making turns out to be true of 8 1/2, even the sailor doing a soft-shoe dance, how all the screen tests are for roles in the film we are seeing, how some camera movements create an ambiguity between Guido, the director in the film, and Fellini, the director of the film, thus taking self-reference one step beyond the work to its maker."

I'll chime in as well with Rushmore. It never amazes me that I can still find new details to laugh at whenever I watch this film. Nothing short of simple perfection.

Followed closely in second place by......about 30 films.

Pulp Fiction : The movie just has some of the best lines in it, many of which I still quote. I never get sick of this movie, and have owned 2 DVD versions of it.

Cinema Paradiso (1989 cut) The little kid in this movie really reminds me of my self. I was alwasy fasinated with video cameras and things that go on behind the scenes of productions. I also just think its a great love story about losing the one that you truly think you should be with. The longer cut is good, but loses the innocence that was in the shorter cut. Again i own 2 DVD versions of it

Sorry just had to put 2 movies down

My all-time favorite is PULP FICTION. When I saw this for
the first time it blew me away because of Tarantino's script.
The dialog and structure was very original. The acting was
terrific (Jackson could have won the Oscar). I still say that
PULP got hosed out of the Best Picture Oscar.
