Friends who lend you Full Screen

I didn't realize the epidemic was this bad! I have a co-worker/ friend who loves to loan me movies. I get excited because I don't have to rent them myself, but everyone he gives me is full screen! I stopped watching Harry Potter on my wide screen mid way through and watched it in my roommate's room who has a regular TV. I sacrified surround so to do so. The next is now "Bourne Identity". I didn't even know they made this full screen. I gladly accepted it but am not sure I want to watch it.

Have any of you had a similar situation and how did you handle it?

I have this problem with my cousin, he only buys fullscreen but the idoit has a widescreen tv. That's one branch on the family tree that you stay the hell away from.

Well, you know...its like your relative that drops $5000 on a top-of-the-line computer so they can send e-mail and track their finances. :p

Yeah, I refuse to borrow FULL SCREEN also. I have a WIDEscreen TV, and refuse to watch a FS movie IF it's available in WS. My brother borrowed Ghost Ship from his friend, and I was going to borrow it from it, but it was FOOL Screen, so I passed.

Oh well

What does it matter? Widescreen or not, you're watching these movies for free. If you want widescreen so bad, go out and rent the movies yourself in the format you want. Sounds like your friend is a pretty nice person to give you a free movie every now and then. Your post makes you sound like a picky beggar.

You need to educate your friend about widescreen.

True. He is. And for that I am thankful. Not all are full screen. He let me borrow Black Hawk Down and it wasn't full screen. I let him borrow from me too so it is a mutual relationship. I am sure he is thinking "WTF? Why does ceeece always give me these crappy versions with black bars to borrow?"

Doesn't matter to me.

I never loan any of my DVD's to anyone. So, I never borrow any DVD's from anyone. That way, nobody will ever ask to borrow one of my DVD's. If one of my friends wants to watch a DVD I own. They will have to watch it on my TV in my home and they will have to watch the widescreen edition.

a friend of mine brought over Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
he borrowed it from one of his friends and brought it to my house ... a cardinal sin to me cause i'd hate to think someone does that to MY movies when i lend them out. he even asked me if I wanted to borrow it, and i immediately said no. i even asked him why he would even lend it to me. his reply was that he knows that i'll take care of it cause i'm anal like that.
and when i went to put it in, i noticed that it was FS. needless to say, i passed on it.

stupid full screen...

i agree, if you have a widescreen TV, watching movies that are full screen sort of ruin the experience because you can definatley tell the difference. you should just convince him that widescreen is the new pink, maybe hell by them up

I borrowed A Beautiful Mind from my boss a couple days ago. I saw after I got home that it was the FS version. Since I know my boss has kids who probably wouldn't go for widescreen I'm not going to bother lecturing her about it. I don't think I'll be borrowing anymore though.

The Bourne Identity was filmed in Super35, so that's why it looks fairly decent at 1.33:1 aspect ratio. I think the Harry Potter films used the same process.

Since I don't borrow DVDs from friends, I don't have the problem. Most of my friends live in another town anyway. I probably share DVDs more with my brother than with anybody else and it's more often me loaning him than the other way around (I have nearly 260 DVDs, he has about 36). Luckily, he's as much of a widescreen advocate as I am, so it's never an issue.

As for the guy who owns a widescreen TV and buys only FS dvds.......I'm at a loss for words for that one.

Does he complain about the black bars right and left?!...

Oh and BTW, my favorite widescreen quote: You know those "annoying black bars" on widescreen movies that you hate so much? Well they have them at your favorite movie theatre...They're called curtains!

Hell yes! I'm behind you all the way!

My friends don't care about widescreen or fullscreen, so they just buy whatever I tell them to because "Cappy's into that high tech crap." They just take my word for it because most of them have crappy set-ups (except for a few rich kids) anyway.

Well thankfully i'm not a renter even from friends. I'm the guy behind the counter handy out the rentals. Which are all WS or nothing. I get a little edgy on certain people borrowing my dvd's but i got them back in fine condition but i haven't lent them out since. I have one friend who understands and is anal about dvd condition as i am (so he can borrow) The only other people i rent to are my managers and i have weened a few over to WS and one over to the 24 series

Luckily all the movies my friends like are all widescreen. But theyre not that huge of DVD fans to even have a wide collection so we own alot of the same stuff.

My uncle is though, and he buys ALOT of damn Fool Screen. It gets me pissed to but I just say fuck it, it his money. Plus we get alot of the same movies, so I dont even need to see his crap.

My cousin is also a huge DVD fan, but hes educated and buys widescreen. He even owns a HDWS TV so he knows his shit.

And I dont let many people borrow my DVDs. Very rarely do I let my uncle, but I let my cousin borrow all the time since hes like me and we keep our shit mint. But I dont let ANYONE borrow my rare, fragile, box set, tin box DVDs at all.

Poetic Justice

Poetic Justice happens, and it is never pretty. Unfortunately if some jackball thinks that the 1.33 ratio is the preferable format then I pan & scan their murdered bodies. Usually I remove their ears and arms, and then use a table saw to cut off the legs just below the pelvis. Usually I'll mark the body with “This corpse has been reformatted to fit the trunk of my car.”

Thry and pick up Salo, or even the two disc eddition of "The Abyss" for twenty bucks. Or how about the 4 disc edition of Lord of the Rings.

The problem is not that people have them for 2 or 3 days, it is that many people have them for much longer, lone them out to other friends, return them damaged, or not at all, and if the last two options happen to a disc that is discontinued well your SOL.

Ok, then dont lend out OOP titles to friends, and explain why to them. Proceed to lend anything else out, and tell them that they are held resposible for costs due to any damage (or loss) of the movie on their part.
