Best filmed battles not in SPR
I'm sure many will agree with with me when I say that the opening and closing battles from Saving Private Ryan are two of the best (if not the best) in movie history. I was just curious what you guys feel are the best of the rest.
For the record, I'd have to say that my three favorites are: 1. The battle of Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back 2. The helicopter attack from Apocalypse Now 3. The castle assualt from Kurasawa's Ran (which if you haven't seen is one I highly recommend) |

I suppose not all of these would be considered "battles" so to speak...some of these could be considered just fight scenes. Along with Hoth and Apocalypse Now, some of my faves are, in no particular order...
-Obi Wan vs. Darth Maul (30-40 seconds of all out action...better then the three way dance that came before it) -any battle from BRAVEHEART -the bank robbery from HEAT -the ninjas vs. SPECTRE in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE -the dogfight in AIR FORCE ONE -El Dorado climax in THE MASK OF ZORRO -Ripley vs. the Queen in ALIENS -the final battle in FROM DUSK TILL DAWN and in the camp corner...the fight for Battle Rocket Ajax in FLASH GORDON |

The opening battle in Sergeant York, 1941, influential enough to inspire Stanley Kubrick to practically replicate it in Paths of Glory.
The finale of The Charge of the Light Brigade, 1936, is brilliant, heart-pounding cinema. In fact, because over 400 horses were killed for this famous battle scene, Hollywood was forced to adopt an animal protection policy. Two Russian films also contain some of the most awesome battle sequences ever filmed: Eisenstein's 1938 epic Alexander Nevsky contains the Tsar's famous battle on the frozen lake; and Sergei Bondarchuk's $50 million dollar epic War and Peace, 1967, showcase conflicts that are nothing short of astonishing. Also, the Eisenstein-esque battle sequences in All Quiet on the Western Front, 1930; the battle at Tandrapur in Gunga Din, 1939; and the final engagement in The Red Badge of Courage are also real corkers. |

I always liked the final battle at the end of Jedi myself. And the Hoth battle in Empire.
