LET'S PLAY GOOD OR BAD!

The game is simple. I will list a few movie titles or topics and you tell me if you think they are good or bad. You can leave a short explanation, explaining why they are good/bad if you want.

HERE WE GO!!!

1) cheap dvd's with no special features
2) MOVIE: The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
3) DVD Discs that you have to flip (ie. Goodfellas)
4) Disney dvd's (you know expensive dvd's that lack special features
5) MOVIE: Fight Club

1.) Cheap DVD's with no special features.

Good. If they aren't going to have special features, that is fine. Just don't try and milk the consumer for $40 at the same time. And cheap DVD's are a good way to, potentially, have movies that you like at a good price on the best looking format, even without special features.

2.) MOVIE: The Last of the Mohicans (1992).

Honestly, The Rock hasn't seen this yet, so he cannot comment. He has heard good things, but that is it.

3.) DVD Discs that you have to flip (ie. Goodfellas, Seven)

Bad...really, really bad. With these being discs from the early days of DVD, it is sorta understandable why they are flippers, but it still sucks. The Rock has held off from buying any flippers in the hopes that they will be rerealeased. Seven is being rereleased, so that is good. But, there is nothing worse than having to get up part of the way through a movie and flip it.

4.) Disney DVD's (You know, expensive dvd's that lack special features).

Bad...really, really, super-duper bad. On top of everything else Disney has done, this is even worse. But, as The Rock mentioned in question number one, above, it is sick for a company, any company, to release a featureless disc and charge about the same, if not more than, others do for feature-laden discs.

A special shout out to New Line because they rule when it comes to giving you a great value (i.e. great transfer, good sound, and lots of features...all for a low price).

5.) MOVIE: Fight Club.

Well, The Rock thought it was very good. Norton and Carter were superb, and Pitt was very good too. The ending was sweet, and it was actually quite humorous (as Fincher has said he intended it to be)...and the message was not pro-violence. In a way, it was like The Man Show on Comedy Central. That is, it was so over the top in its portrayal of men that it was meant to be a parody, an exaggeration (to the extreme) of stereotypes, and the result was entertaining, funny, and made you reflect philosophically.

1) Good, but not great. It's always annoying when a fave. movie isn't done justice on DVD, but the price is a consolation.

2) No comment. Haven't seen it.

3) Bad. I've never seen one, so I don't really know. However, I'm against it in principal, as you don't have to flip VHS!

4) Bad. So bad that I'm afraid to buy them now incase they bring out better versions next month. Companies shouldn't puth that kind of uncertainty into the consumer.

5) No comment. Haven't seen it (yet).

1) Bad, unless you don't consider anamorphic widescreen and the original trailer to be extras, then it's totally do-able.

2)Never seen it, not very high on my list to see, heard the DVD was a disappointment, so I have no impetus now to see it.

3)Bad, for obvious reasons. They're being phased out, so what's the point of asking (sorry that came out so rudely...)?

4) I detest Disney movies, save for FANTASIA, so it's no sweat off my back either way (until they announce their DVD plans for FANTASIA, then I'll be sweating!).

5) One of the finest films of the 1990s--it's a crying shame it was a box-office disappointment. David Fincher is the most extraordinary director to come out of the last decade, but he only has one hit to his name. I guess the world isn't ready for such a powerhouse of talent...

Good and bad. Some movies deserve a SE treatment, others don't. These featurless disc are good for the rental market, but that's about it.

2) LOTM
Not taking into account it's authenticity regarding Native peoples, I liked it.

3) Flipper discs
Bad, very very bad. And to Sith Lord Si who commented that you don't have to flip VHS, that is SO wrong. You have to get up and put in the second tape on many of the longer VHS movies out there. Then, you have to rewind BOTH tapes! Give me DVD any day!

4) Disney DVDs
Disney will be Disney. If these titles are a must have for you, as a few were for me, then it's good to have the opportunity to buy them on a superior format. The Price/feature set is, of course, bad.

5) Fight Club
I haven't seen it, but plan to on DVD.

1) As long as the transfer's good, then I don't mind many discs coming without special features. All I need is a good transfer, good sound quality, and the original or director's intended aspect ratio. Anamorphic is a plus. Of course it is wonderful to have the features, but I think accessibility (price-wise) is also very important. What I can't stand are the $15 Warner 4:3 shit.

2)Whatever. Not a bad movie. Actually, my first date was to see that movie with someone.

3) Bad. I don't like Flippers, but in the scheme of things it's better than, say, only a pan&scan version. All a matter of priorities.

4) Whatever. I refuse to watch them anyways. And if Fantasia comes out, I'll buy it whatever the price.

5) Great.

good. sometimes the special stuff sucks, or you just don't want it (or don't care) and you can still get the movie without paying 40 bucks.

2) MOVIE: The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
haven't seen it.

3) DVD Discs that you have to flip (ie. Goodfellas)
sucks, but i guess for the time they were released, okay. i have das boot, which is a flipper. the movie is like 3 hours long, so maybe it has to be that way?!? i can't wait for se7en to be re-released, so i can replace the only other flipper i have.

4) Disney dvd's (you know expensive dvd's that lack special features)
die disney die! sorry. anyhow, that really sucks. all that does is buy you folks who won't continue to buy your dvds (altho after that divx thing..)

5) MOVIE: Fight Club
can't wait to see it. big fan of norton's, big fan of pitt as well.

by the way, someone said you don't have to flip vhs, which isn't completely true, my copy of widescreen heat was 2 tapes, and braveheart was that way too.

Mixed blessing. For some titles, I don't care, but others deserve some special treatment. Considering New Line's get-the-world-for-$24.95 policy, cheap DVDs need to be REALLY cheap ($19.95 or less list).

2) MOVIE: The Last of the Mohicans (1992)

I liked the movie well enough when I saw it in the theater. I haven't seen the new "director's cut" DVD so can't comment.

3) DVD Discs that you have to flip (ie. Goodfellas)

Only acceptable of the movie has a theatrical intermission break anyway ("Lawrence of Arabia," "My Fair Lady") and the flip occurs at this intermission break.

4) Disney dvd's (you know expensive dvd's that lack special features

BAD beyond all possible definition of badness.

5) MOVIE: Fight Club

50/50. I thought the first half was great, but the second half went off in a direction that wasn't nearly as interesting as that suggested by the whole first half. I will check it out again on DVD, though...maybe I missed something.

I've never encountered a VHS flipper before. Braveheart in the UK was on one vid, as was Titanic. Looks like UK VHS producers tend to put more on one tape here. In the X-FIles boxed sets, each vid contained 5 uncut episodes. That's four hours each!

of course the longer a videocassette you have (over a certain limit), the worse the quality, or the faster it degrades. . .

what in tha Hamfat?
We know VHS is bad, VHS wasn't even on the list. With VHS it wasn't a flipper, it was two tapes! Casino, Apocolypse Now, etc...

So, two tapes. Bad video. Bad Audio. No shelf life...

Oh yeah, I'll pick that over DVD...Where do I sign up!

1) cheap dvd's with no special features

Good. ish. If it's cheap enough and the pictures good, then it's okay, and to be honest I could take or leave the trailers, featurettes, deleted scenes, etc. But it's a shame if it's a film particularly crying out for a commentary. Bad if it comes out later on special edition / Criterion, eg Rushmore. Not even cheap then as you have to buy it again.

2) MOVIE: The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
I enjoyed it. Good battle scenes - authentically bloody. Romance a bit corny.

3) DVD Discs that you have to flip (ie. Goodfellas)

Bad. That 2 tape VHS thing people have mentioned is bizarre! We totally don't have that in the UK. TV series might come on two tapes due to 6 hour running time, etc, but not feature films. Maybe it's bcause longer running PAL tapes are better quality than NTSC?

4) Disney dvd's (you know expensive dvd's that lack special features

Sounds bad but can't say I've ever wanted to buy one.

5) MOVIE: Fight Club

Splendiferous.

1.Good...Very Good..I for one do not need all the special features on every movie at a premium price. Some Movies..I am only interested in the Movie, others I want extra features.

2.Ok...Kinda Cool. Very boring at times.

3.Horrible...No comments needed.

4.SUCKZ. If they are expensive they better have lots of features or come with a signed poster or something

5.Hated it!
