Saving Private Ryan: Omaha Beach scene

I have a question about Saving Private Ryan. I've noticed on my disc that starting from the a little before Tom Hanks yells for the bangalores the picture looks streaky for lack of a better term. Its the same look as there is with the torches later in the movie. At first I thought it was my disc, so I took it back, and got one from a different store and its the same. Is that an intentional effect or a problem with my disc?

No, the effect you see is intentional. I believe that the effect was used to create a greater sence of realism and documentery style. If you look carefully, you will also see it in the other battle scenes. Most noteabely in the attack on the radar station and the end scene. pretty cooleffect tho imho.

I beleive that there is a series of photographs taken during the omaha beach invasion that were damaged somehow. The finnished product contained the streaks.

SPR used the effect. Don't ask me why.
