The next Disney lineup??
Well, now that all of the fanfare of 'Disney on DVD' has diminished and they've released all of their first lineup of 'Masterpiece Editions' on DVD, what's next?
Has anybody heard any word on upcoming releases? I was checking out Reel.com today and they are currently taking pre-orders for several Disney movies on DVD (Aristocats, Sword & the Stone, Fox & the Hound, etc.) but they have these listed as 'Gold Edition' (as if they had been released previously on DVD.) Anyone out there know if these are going to be the next wave of DVD's, if there is going to be anything /other/ than 'Gold' editions, and when they're going to release the other big guns like Aladdin, Lion King & Beauty & the Beast? |

ALADDIN, LION KING and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST are not in the next year's line-up. All three of these titles are to be among the ten "moratorium" titles, which will be released on a limited basis once every ten years. All other animated features, including the heretofore unreleased BLACK CAULDRON and FOX AND HOUND, are being scheduled for permanent DVD issue over the next two years. Many sites, including DVD FILE, can fill you in on what's coming up this year. Go to "Cool Stuff" on the home page, click on "DVD Release Database," choose "Disney," and check "Announced."

A quick Disneyspeak tutorial: -"Limited Edition" are any of the 9 animated titles that came out Oct-Dec '99, originally to be available only for 60 days. -"Gold Edition" is any of the 20-some titles to be released in 2000-2001 & to be permanently available. A schedule of releases for this year is at www.disneygold.com . There are some every month starting in March. -"Platinum Edition" is any of 10 of the 'crown jewel' titles to be released in the future at the rate of one a year with limited-time availability. I could look these up, but by the time the first one comes out next year they might change the whole plan again. The words Gold & Platinum have nothing to do with the contents or amount of special features. Don't confuse this with New Line Platinum series, for example. All of the Limiteds will end up as either a Gold or a Platinum. Some of the Golds are just the Limiteds with slightly different packaging. |

The "Platinum" titles begin appearing in Fall 2001 with Snow White, which will be available for a limited time. From that point on, each Fall a different Platinum title will be released. Some of the Platinum titles are actually already available as "limited issue" discs. These titles will, presumably, actually be limited. The other nine Platinum titles are: Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, The Jungle Book, Lady and the Tramp, Cinderella, Bambi, The Lion King, and 101 Dalmatians.
