Possible third Kubrick Boxed Set?

I was looking through some newsgroups when I stumbled upon this post: http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&...ews.sunrise.ch

Here's the juicy quote!

"Right now, Harlan is working on DVD extras for the new edition of the Stanley Kubrick Collection. Warners is negotiating with MGM to get their films as well and have a more complete collection. Among the new extras we will see unused art design etchings and drawings for 2001, much more material shot for Harlan's documentary and some of Kubrick's early shorts (I'm not really sure if they will release all, "Day of the Fight" will definitely be on the DVD). We *wont* see "Fear and Desire". Harlan has no intention to ever release this, in his opinion this would be against SK's will."

I have been contemplating buying the newer boxed set for a few months now, bot if there's a slim chance of getting an even more complete set with more extras sometime in the future, I will wait it out. Grr.

Has anyone out there heard ANYTHING else about this? I'm inclined to believe the source, but I'd be curious if anyone has any secret connections who know more about this.

No word on whether or not they'll be anamorphic yet? They did it for 2001 so the precedent has been set.

I will be really fucking pissed if they reissue it a THIRD time...I just got it last Christmas. I think the current release is just fine, so I wouldn't buy it again.

I waited the first time expecting a second release... a third would be overkill ( and a majorly expensive double dip)... no thanks, save it for HD-DVD...

The 2nd volume is a superb collection in all respects. A set consisting of the films NOT included in the remastered set (the MGM ones) would be welcome, but other than that I would find it hard to re-buy the collection, despite Kubrick being my favourite filmmaker.

Having never mustered up the cash to buy the earlier sets, I'm hoping that this is true.

I've seen (and love dearly) all of the movies in the current boxed sets, and even broke down and bought A Clockwork Orange in a 2 for $20 deal at Best Buy, but I've avoided buying any more Kubrick DVDs since I planned on buying the collection further down the road (partly to snag that documentary disc).

The idea of getting an even more robust collection containing even more extras and Kubrick movies I've never seen(!!!) and some early Kubrick short films( ) makes me feel all funny in my tummy.

I know a lot of you feel screwed after dropping a lot of money only to have a bigger collection come out further down the road, but I can't muster up too much sympathy since I'd pretty much sell off one of my lungs to get my hands on this collection!

I have a feeling that we still would get the weird aspect ratios on some of those films though...

I already have the Criterion 2001 LD, and their Spartacus DVD, 2001 on DVD and Dr Strangelove on DVD.

I've held back on the Kubrick collection as I'm sure there would be better releases down the line.

When they put the "Life In Pictures" disc in with the remastered set I nearly bit, but was going to wait and see what the SE of that title was going to be like (not heard anything in a while).

If this does come out, and I hope it will, I'll jump at it in a second, especially if they work in Spartacus and the MGMs (aren't 2001 and Lolita in the set anyway?)

Yeah but it wont be the Criterion version!

I really hope this happens, I've helf off on buying the set for the lack of extras and because I dont really like Eyes Wide Shut that much. But if this happens -- commentaries, 2 disc sets, etc. -- I WILL RUN TO THE STORE.

2001 and Lolita are now owned by WB. Part of the films that they bought from MGM's catolog (including Poltergeist, Ben Hur and more)

The Kubrick movies currently controlled by MGM are The Killing, Killer's Kiss, and Paths of Glory.

I believe that Spartacus is a Universal property.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

You are correct; Killer's Kiss, The Killing, and Paths of Glory were United Artists titles, I believe; therefore MGM still holds them.

I dunno. I have to agree with Marq; maybe they could make separate sets, a gigantic one with everything, and maybe a smaller one with just the MGM titles.

As far as their being anamorphic, the debate has raged forever. I think I can live with The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut being full-frame if that's what Kubrick intended, but it'd be nice if they did a remastered Dr. Strangelove and anamorphic transfers for Lolita, Clockwork Orange, and Barry Lyndon.

BTW, the Criterion DVD of Spartacus is outstanding and is more than worthy of a purchase by itself. The transfer is stunning, the soundtrack is well-done, and the extras are fascinating.

While I would love to have all films from Clockwork through Eyes in anamorphic, I'm somewhat pissed that Harlan is working on a 3rd set (if it's true). I don't see why he shouldn't have done everything right with the second.
Someone here posted a lengthy Harlan interview, where he said that the new box is the final, definitive set (or something in that vein).

Warner/Harlan should be ashamed to issue 3 box sets in 7(?) years to finally get it right... (and that's only if they get it right, and don't issue a 4th!)

My sentiments exactly. Kubrick is my favorite director of all time, but there would have to be some serious extras on this set in order for me to buy them again. By that I mean commentaries from actors, producers, writers, crew members, and/or film scholars. Also anamorphic transfers where warranted. A few pieces of early art designs or "conceptual drawings" just aren't gonna cut it.

IMHO, commentary tracks and possibly the completion of Vivian Kubrick's documentary on the making of FMJ are the only things that would top (actually supplement ) the already fantastic Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures from the current box set.

I already own the MGM-owned films and, to tell you the truth, am not particularly interested in his early short films (except maybe Day Of The Fight ).

It would seem to me that the release of a third box set (especially at this point it time) would just reek of the exploitation of the great filmmaker's legacy by Warner's/the Kubrick estate.

I've passed on the last two sets, with no good reason. I love Kubrick as much as the next guy, I just haven't gotten the energy to bus over to the store with $200 with the goal in mind of getting the set.

But maybe this time...

Plus, what else has Harlan got to do? Seriously? Make his own movies?

I don't know about this. Posts on newsgroups aren't exactly the most reliable sources.

I still haven't purchased the set though so if it is true, it may be a reason to finally buy it.

I don't think "Spartacus" would ever be included in any Kubrick set, even if WB did hold the rights, seeing as Kubrick despised the film, and the conditions under which he worked making it. The same goes for "Fear and Desire".

It'd be nice to have a set with the MGM-owned films included as well, and some new extras might be interesting, but I echo MogglePorn's comment that this rumored set should be saved for HD-DVD...

Perhaps this is part of the reason behind this week's price drops on the Warner Kubrick DVDS?

I'll third the suggestion to save it for HD-DVD.

Even though I have paid $95 for this set (MRRP is $199, I believe), I won't buy this new dvd set unless there are some great extras (by that I mean The Shining's infamous deleted scenes, making of 2001, commentary by the actors, etc etc..) This seems like it will be like the Terminator 2 case (for God's sake they released it 3 times...)

Thats exactly like me, everytime I go to the store getting ready to buy it I always see something else I want or I just think is it really worth 200 bucks. But if they do a 3rd edition then its a definate purchase.

I already dropped $150 on the second set the week it came out, and I'm not buying it again.

It's getting to the stage when I'm afraid to buy any DVD's I see on sale in a shop lest a new version be released the next week.
