Jaws 3 IS Entertaining
I actually saw Jaws-3D as half of a double feature in the theaters in 1983 (the other movie was a pretty bad movie as well with Steve Guttenberg called "The Man Who Wasn't There;" at least it had a girls' shower scene in 3-D). Neither movie was very good but it was fun to have the 3-D glasses and luckily I like some bad movies as long as they don't take themselves too seriously.
Sometimes you just get in the mood for mindless trash. What can I say? I once went to the multi-plex with a girl I was dating; she saw "Agnes of God" and I saw "Re-Animator" and neither of us had any regrets over not seeing the other's movie. My glaring complaint with the Jaws 3-D DVD is the terrible cover art. I realize the movie isn't "Citizen Kane" but why did Universal have to kick a brother while he's down?

My complaint about the disc (other than the fact it isn't in 3-D) is they didn't include the old infomercial like special that played back when the film came out. It aired the week before the release of the film and went into how they did the special effects, the 3-D etc. Very interesting stuff.

There was a little mini-renaissance of 3d in the 80s, wasn't there? I saw Friday the 13th 3d in an audience filled with stoners (their heads all jumped in unison as the opening credits "jumped" out at us). Too bad the 3d movies all sucked so goddam much.

Other 80's 3-D movies:
METALSTORM THE DESTRUCTION OF JARYD SYN TREASURE OF THE 4 CROWNS Some truly awful Star Wars rip off animated film (STAR RAIDER??? Some generic name that I have forgotten) that was one of the worst films I remember seeing in a theatre. Didn't even really use the 3-D except for the backgrounds. |

That would be...
...Starchaser: The Legend of Orin. Total bollocks, it must be said. And the other one you can't remember is Parasite, with Demi Moore.
Another was Amityville 3D. This was an enjoyable movie, with 3D that works quite well even when viewed flat, as it is more perspective-based that comin' at ya (pun intended). We saw Jaws 3 at the cinema minus the 3D, and it looked horrible. Huge red and green smears, as though somebody had just ran an eraser (they wrote carefully in order not to use the UK word: rubber) down the lenght of the print to remove the 3D. Our sister-in-law saw it in 3D and she said the effects were very convincing, better than any other type of 3D she has seen. So there is something, somewhere to reccomend about Jaws 3D, then.

I actually just thought of it on my way in to read this post. Had no idea Demi was in it. Now I wish I could see it again just to remember how bad it was. I still have the 3D glasses for Parasite some where in a box at home. I remember them clearly because they had a picture of a parasite with it's mouth open in the center of the frames. They were black and white. (The frames, not the lenses) |

When I saw Jaws 3-d in the theatre I thought it was absolutely brilliant. I loved everything about it. It was my favorite Jaws movie up to that point.
Of course, I was also 7 at the time. Still, that initial impression has made a place in my heart for the movie, even if it is kind of dumb. I still like it. I think I still see it for the potential that it had as opposed to the mess that it is. I also see it through the eyes of a 7 year old who was seeing his very first 3-d movie ever (and stilll the only one I've ever seen) and thought it was the greatest thing in the world, even if I did have a wicked headache afterwards.

I saw Jaws 3(D) in a theater back in 1983....in 3D and the effects weren't half bad... I liked the part where the camera is in the shark while the british guy is getting munched on. Jaws 3 (D) is still fairly watchable....
now thinking about it I also saw Treasure Of The Four Crowns.. I think that too came out in 83. I recall it being some cheesy Italian made Raiders Of The Lost Ark-ish film I think Universal did a lousy job with all of the Jaws DVD covers (especially 1 & 2) |

I've always kind of enjoyed Jaws 3. Saw it in the theaters and thought it was pretty good at the time. Wish it wasn't so barebones. I haven't picked it up yet, but it's possible I might sometime in the future.

My question is this. Why wasn't the DVD released in 3D???? Can 3D even be incorporated onto DVD???? I want my 3D DVD!!!!! Peace Out |

I was actually lucky enough to see all 4 of the Jaws films in theatres when they first came out. I saw Jaws in Oakland and remember how freaked out everyone was coming out of the theater. It was the first time I had seen huge lines for a film.
I remember flipping through a daily variety a couple years later and saw the great promo ad for JAWS 2, with the red water and the fin. I was so happy that they had made a second one. I took a bus with my girlfriend and about 4 other friends to see it. We all really liked it at the time (I was about 14). Jaws 3D I also took a date to. I remember we walked out thinking it wasn't as good as the others, but the idea of it was pretty cool (ecspecially when you think shark number 1 is the main shark in the film). I saw Jaws The Revenge by myself in Los Angeles. Good thing too because it was the worst of the bunch. In fact, I would say that each of the Jaws film got progressively worse with each sequel. But, that being said, I will buy 3 & 4 this week becuase there will always be a special place in my heart for the big bad mutha shark I grew up with.... |
