Discs that go defective years after purchase?

Case in point: I bought the original DEVIL'S ADVOCATE disc the weekend it was released. Just tonight, I played it again (it's not the second time I'm playing it - I've played it many times before).

Around Chapter 31 (and a few instances before), the disc just started freezing, blocking, stuttering, etc. I ejected the disc, cleaned it, still the same.

My player (Panasonic A300 - first generation) is fine. It plays other discs with no problems, so what gets me upset is the fact that DEVIL'S ADVOCATE used to play just fine. Of course, most of you know about the reedited version of this movie due to that lawsuit. So I'm disappointed that I might have to buy another disc that's been reedited due to content.

Has anyone else experienced a disc that went "buggy" on them years after you bought it? I haven't tested this disc on another player but all other features on this disc still work and my player still works well.

I have that same disc, bought around the same time, and an a300 and have no problems...

Good idea, try it out on another player if you can

I have the original pressing as well. I went and tried it in my Pionner 414 with no problems.

Maybe the problem is that there were unknown production problems at one or more facilities in the early days, which could mean that we all have some number of time bombs just waiting to go off in our collections.

Or it could just be an isolated case. Things break.

I tried my disc on an RCA550C (or D?) and the same thing happened. Warner, a new disc on you is deserved since I had nothing to do with this disc wearing out (i.e., misuse). It is a plain old defect much past the 30 days to return/exchange it from wherever I got it (which I don't even remember). Pioneers of the format slowly starting to crumble...

Well, I tried THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE on a third player (Sony) and it was worse than the Panasonic and RCA! It wouldn't even play! Bah.

NOW ... another title that bit the dust on two players (Panasonic and Sony): FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON. Chapter 11 of Part 2 was just like THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE. Then, Part 3 totally skips Chapter 1 and goes to Ch. 2. The maddening thing is that this disc worked fine before!!!

HBO's Hotline Web site has a server problem and Warner no longer has an e-mail page. Guess I'll have to write a letter and hopefully Warner is the place to write to for an exchange. No way I'm paying another $100 or so for this title. LAST OF THE DOGMEN, now EARTH TO MOON. Sigh.
