Considering that - Star Trek aside - Paramount does their TV show season sets at least 6 months apart, it means November AT A MINIMUM before S2 of Cheers (or Frasier) could possibly hit the market.

Since Paramount just got around to announcing stuff for September, it means we have two months before we even find out IF they will bring Cheers S2 in November.

Tune in again at the end of August for the answer to this, and other buring questions...

(God, I'm starting to sound like a soap opera announcer! )

In the meantime, thanks for the nice deceptive thread title!

While I too did like the Cheers (and Frasier) set, I was very surprised to see that it did not have english subtitles.
I know it has closed captions, but that does not help me. I hope this does not set the standard for future sets.

You make it sound like I said it was more set in stone than it really is.

It's more like a "at least 6 months, maybe more...could possibly be a year or more" kind of thing.

They're really just getting into the non-StarTrek season sets, and getting into that groove means that they might not always get releases out on a hard-and-fast schedule.

However, keep in mind that most other studios release TV season set product on either a 6- or 12-month gap (Columbia, Fox, Warner, MGM, Rhino, BBC, Anchor Bay, Buena Vista, etc.). Some companies, with some product and with practice, have just now gotten certain releases down to perhaps four month intervals (Warner with Friends, Fox with M*A*S*H). Others intend to head that way (like Anchor Bay with the Xena and Hercules releases).

So figure that 6 months is the minimum gap as a series begins to hit DVD, and that 12 months is more like the norm. What does it take to break that mold? A legend, such as Star Trek. Nothing less.

Cheers is much better than Star Trek IMO and the single best sitcom ever, period.

I agree

Yeah, JdW, it's the best sitcom. I forgot how many funny
episodes there were in the first season. The pilot episode
wasn't very good, but from the second show on, the writing
was terrific. It would be nice to see an announcement for
season #2, but it could be like THE SIMPSONS seasons where
we have to wait a year or more for them to be released.

Now we need to see TAXI get released on DVD.

No sitcom will EVER equal "Cheers"

simply because no one will ever be able to write so much intelligent humor into 23 minutes ever again.

The last I heard (on the 'wish list for 2004' thread), Paramount was planning a release of Season Two near Christmas. If so, here's to hoping this set has more extras than the last one...at least some more about Nick Colasanto in a doc or commentary, please?!

BTW, was there ever an official "behind the scenes" book about "Cheers"? If so, does anyone know the title so I can hunt it down??? Thanks a million!

We have had box sets for series 1-8 in the UK for quite some time, but they are not as 'polished' as the R1 ones. They get a few more extras and the packaging looks better.

I've got 1-8 on R2 so can't be bothered to start collecting the R1 releases now.

See, the thing is, if they stay true to the "six months between sets" rule, that means that we won't have a complete Cheers set until May, 2008! They need to make the releases come a bit quicker; maybe once every three months.

If you think that's bad, we won't have a complete Simpsons til 2017, at the earliest!

I hadn't thought about that. When the show ends (whenever that may be), hopefully, they'll have time to crank out the sets a bit faster.

Dear DVDFilers:

I wrote to Paramount a few months ago, concerning possible "extras" they could include. I mentioned bumpers, bits from Entertainment Tonight (which is owned by Paramount, which also owns Cheers), and my favorite the 1982 NBC Christmas special, which was hosted by the Cheers gang in character, along with Nicholas Colosanto. At that time, all five of the major characters, (because they couldn't sing), tapped water glasses for a Christmas Carol.

Sincerely,

JThree

I hope Cheers and Fraiser season 2 comes out in time for Christmas.

The Simpsons will never be complete, by the time it's done there will be a new format out.

Great ideas, JThree. I'd like to see, on either the second or third season set, some sort of tribute to Nicholas Colasanto, with interviews from cast members. Coach was a very vital part of the show during the show's first three seasons, and not very much is known about the actor who played him.

I'm dying for the first 3 seasons with Rebecca Howe. Those, IMO, were hilarious.
