Spike Jonze & others to release DVD compilations of their music videos/ short films!

This news is cooler than words and something I've been wishing for since DVDs first emerged. Fantastic.
Here's the story: http://www.zap2it.com/movies/news/st...-17421,00.html

Quote:
HOLLYWOOD (Zap2it.com) - Director Spike Jonze ("Adaptation," "Being John Malkovich") is compiling a collection of his music videos, short films, commercials and "other extras" on DVD. The disc, titled "The Work of Director Spike Jonze," will be released on August 26 as part of Palm Pictures' new venture, The Directors Label, a director-created and compiled DVD series.

Future releases will follow on a monthly basis and will feature the work of acclaimed video and commercial directors Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry ("Human Nature").

Each release will be specially packaged and contain a 52-page book full of never-before-seen photographs, storyboards, drawings and interviews.

"Michel and I have been talking about this forever," says Jonze. "A couple of years ago we talked to Chris, which got us motivated."

Jonze's music videos include the Grammy Award-winning Fatboy Slim clip "Weapon of Choice," which features Christopher Walken dancing through a hotel with wild abandon; and Bjork's "It's Oh So Quiet," a Busby Berkeley-inspired song and dance. Jonze also directed the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" and Weezer's "Buddy Holly."

"The Work of Director Spike Jonze" will also include three 30-minute-plus documentaries: "Torrance Rises," the story of Richard Koufay and the Torrance Dance Community's preparation and performance at the 1999 MTV Music Video Awards with Fatboy Slim; "Amarillo By Morning," documentary about rodeo riders in Houston; and "What's Up Fatlip," a film about former Pharcyde member Fatlip.

The French-born Gondry is known for his collaboration with Bjork, having directed six videos for the Icelandic pop star. He has also helmed videos for the Rolling Stones, Beck, Radiohead, the Chemical Brothers, the White Stripes, Daft Punk, and the Foo Fighters.

He is currently wrapping up his second feature film, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," written by frequent Jonze scribe, Charlie Kaufman.

London-based Chris Cunningham is known for his creative use if visual effects in music videos such as Aphex Twin's "Come To Daddy" and Bjork's "All is Full of Love." "The Work of Director Chris Cunningham" will also include new unseen versions of his art films "Flex" and "Monkey Drummer."

Additional Directors Label volumes in the ongoing DVD series are slated for release in spring 2004.
Beautiful. Hope others are as excited about this as myself. Others collections I'd love to see released: Mark Romanek, David Fincher...etc.

I'd also like to see one with David Fincher's music videos, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I'd like to see more releases of directors' short films, who are abit more established than Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry. I know some disks have directors' shorts (films!) like Nightmare before Christmas & M. Night DVD's. But I'd snap up a release of Spielbergs shorts (Films!) in a heartbeat.

I'll definately pick up the Chris Cunningham release (Even though there's an Aphex Twin DVD on the way.)

I have a minute and a half long clip of Monkey Drummer, it's delightful!

There's one on the way, but no one knows if it will be a complete collection of videos, or just a compilation of the video releases that have already been released yet.

"Monkey Drummer" is kind of an Aphex Twin video though, since Cunningham used a drukqs song on it.

I would definately second the vote for collections of Mark Romanek and David Fincher. Let's hope they do them.

And a word of advice to prevent a lot of complaining later and high ebay bidding:

If these DVDs will truly include various music videos and such, then BUY THEM AS SOON AS THEY STREET!

With all of the red tape involved, I wouldn't be surprised to see discs in this line pulled quickly and without explanation, and since these don't seem to be the kind of sets that stores like Wal-Mart and Target will keep in stock, your chance of finding them on the shelf after a pull is very unlikely.

Anyways, bring 'em on.

These have been delayed a few times, but there is now a website set up for the incredibly anticipated (by me) releases:
http://www.directorslabel.com/

DVDEmpire now lists a 10/28 release date according to this thread at HTF. I would think that date is for the first release (Jonze) only...

Looks good. I'll definitely pick up the Spike Jonze comp, and I might pick up the others once I find out what videos they have done outside of the ones shown on the respective covers.

The Chris Cunningham one looks amazing. Some of the videos he's done (not sure yet if ALL of these are on there, but I think they will be):

Leftfield "Africa Shox"
Bjork "All is Full of Love"
Aphex Twin "Come to Daddy" and "Windowlicker"
Squarepusher "Come On My Slelector"
Portishead "Only You"
Madonna "Frozen"
Auteurs "Light Aircraft on Fire" and "Back With the Killer Again"
Autechre "Second Bad Vilbel"

He's also done some commercials, and a few short films, like "Monkey Drummer".

Chris Cunningham

Michel Gondry has done the following (among others):

Bjork "Human Behavior", "Army of Me", "Isobel", "Hyperballad", "Joga" and "Bachelorette"
Daft Punk "Around the World"
Foo Fighters "Everlong"
White Stripes "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" and "Fell in Love With a Girl"
Radiohead "Knives Out"

Michel Gondry

Hope this isn't old info here, but I'm really eager and excited for these DVDs after watching the trailers, so I thought I'd share.

Wow, I have no idea how I missed this thread initally. I would kill for a DVD compilation of Cunningham's work, but now I can simply purchase it from my local retailer

The covers are incredibly nice looking as well.

Already being a huge Spike Jonze fan and a sorta Michael Gondry fan (thought Human Nature was just OK, but i think ESotSM will blow me away), can someone tell me a good video to see to introduce myself to Gondry and Cunningham's music video work (ex: Weapon of Choice would be a good one for intro to Jonze)?

PS: While I'd also love to see a David Fincher and Michael Bay (ducking) disc, I dount Fincher would do it. He says he doesnt like his early work.

I think his work with Aphex Twin is quite delightful in a dark/bizarre/grotesque/hilarious way. ('Come to Daddy' freaked the hell out of me when I was younger and the dead-on rap parody of 'Windowlicker' is pretty funny.)

Here are the cool trailers for the discs (just click the covers)

http://www.directorslabel.com/

but, strangely, Jonze's commercial's are left out while Gondry's and Cunningham's are included. I hope Jonze's are in there too! For Jonze it says "a collection of short films, documentaries, and music videos" for the other two it says "a collection of short films, commercials and music videos."

PS: how do you pernounce the "Michel" in Michel Gondry (it's not Michael)

Thanks for that link Chaddoli. I wish I could view those trailers but my computer is being a bitch. Probably tomorrow though.
I just checked dvdpricesearch.com and was thrilled at how inexpensive these will be! I'm looking forward to the Spike Jonze one, and though I don't know much about the other two, I'm sure I'll be pleased if I pick them up as well. This looks like a series worth supporting.

Amazon has a great deal on all 3 dvd's - the whole set for $34 and change with free shipping (that's $11 and change per disc). Buy the set, then email a friend, and they get a 10 percent discount on THAT price (making it $10 and change). Not bad, considering the 400 minute running time on these dvd's...

The Jonze disc is an absolute must-have for me. I'm afraid I'm not really familiar with the work of the other two, but may check those out.
I hope they're readily available on the 28th, though I suspect I may have to order them online.

On Wednesday, October 22nd AT 8:00 PM (Not specified what time zone so check local listings.), MTV2 will be playing a Chris Cunningham retrospective to promote his DVD compilation.

So if you're questioning the three-set, maybe this will help?

I placed my order today for that bundle of all three DVDs at Amazon. I'm dying to get them and watch. Especially after reading these nice reviews (all for the Jonze set only):
- http://music.monstersatplay.com/revi...spikejones.php
- http://www.dvdangle.com/reviews/review.php?Id=3297

Bjork commentary? Christopher Walken commentary? pinch me now. Kind of a dream come true.

Damn, I am REALLY looking forward to these releases. I just hope that some stores around me will actually get them in. The 'fringe' titles seem to be hit or miss in most of the stores I frequent. I still have yet to find Lost in La Mancha anywhere but at Border's, and I ain't paying their outrageous prices for DVDs.

Thanks for the links, BTW! Once I get all of these, I can start fully hoping and praying for a subsequent release in the series from David Fincher (one can dream, can't he?).

That took me buy surprise too!

DAMN YOU COLUMBIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Release it proper the first time around fools! Alas, I must buy twice. Looks like one has to really pressure that studio like PT Anderson did for Punch-Drunk Love to get them to release ONE edition of a new film.

I checked my order for the 3-disc set I placed at Amazon.com last week, and it says:
Items not yet shipped:
Delivery estimate: Nov 17, 2003 - Nov 21, 2003

yikes. Of course, I'm in Canada, so that could be part of it, but is anyone else expecting this delay for the set? I read that the Gondry set is pretty hard to find (if at all). Perhaps its holding it back a tad?

I'll be ordering using that three for $34.87 deal on Amazon in the next couple of days. I hope there isn't a problem with them like Marq described. Have they shipped yet Marq, or are you still waiting?

And I'm also wondering, Videoworx, how did you find that Amazon deal? I can't get to that page by searching their site, I had to find this thread for the link.

well, i finally got through all 3 dvd's, and they kick ass! As far as deals go, the $34 and change I spent at Amazon was well worth it (it was probably a pre-order thing, so the deal might have changed - amazon even gave me a 50 cent discount, and some amazon nickel crap discount).

I found that deal purely by accident - i did a search for chris cunningham, because I was originally only going to buy that one disc, and the 3 pack came up. got lucky, i guess.

The Chris Cunningham has the least amount of content (it's a single-sided disc, vs. the other 2 double-sided discs) - but the quality on each disc is outstanding. The books are great too (and they smell rather nice).

If you are a fan of any of these videos/directors, the cost is sooooo worth it...
