Bad News Bears

I watched this last night on dvd for the first time last night, and I can't express how great this movie is, in so many ways. Is there anyone who is a fan of the movie (even the not-so-good other two)?

One thing I noticed, for anyone who has seen it, was how pre- PC
the show was. Very refreshing. So much stuff in the movie they wouldn't have gotten away with now.

Tanner Boyle is my hero. Yes it's a great flick. I liked the one where they go play at the Astrodome but the one where they went to Japan (I think) wasn't that good.

Bad News Bears was the movie that taught it was OK to be racist and violent. I love that film.

Long live Chico's Bail Bonds.

A couple of my all time favorites. Bought these as soon as they came out on DVD and watched them a few times since. These movies bring back fond memories of childhood.

Love both the original and the 2nd one (Breaking Training). I still haven't picked either one up yet, but I'm going to sooner or later. The third flick is pretty lousy, but I think the first two are great fun.

You know they just reduced the SRP on all of those to $14.98 a few weeks ago. I got BNB for $12.99 at Best Buy. Thoroughly enjoyed it! One of my all-time favorites. NOT one I want to let my 5-year-old watch without a bit of guidance (I could easily see him emulating some of Tanner's worse qualities).

But it was an honest film that showed how people (even kids) really thought and acted at the time, at least in some quarters. I always liken it to All In The Family. You weren't supposed to love the fact that these people acted this way, it was more like an example of what not to do. But that, despite these prejudices, violences, and other "dispicable" behaviors, in the end these were good people who overcame obstacles and always, ALWAYS had love and friendship for their "family".

The late, great Walter Matthau was awesome in anything he did. A small Tatum O'Neal rocks the screen in a big way. Vic Morrow shines in his role, a record of what a fine actor he was before his tragic death on the set of Twilight Zone: The Movie. And rounding out the obituaries, director Michael Ritchie brought us one of his earliest successes here...before moving on to Fletch, Fletch Lives, Wildcats (which was kind of a BNB remake, and one of my faves), Student Bodies, The Couch Trip, Divine Madness, Golden Child, Cops & Robbersons, and others.

Raise your hand if you know which family member of Walter Matthau was also in this film? Okay, I'll give: His son Charles played one of the boys on another team that the Bears played against.

i love this movie as well. i would even buy the tv series if they put it out. on a related note, i would love to see here come the tigers on dvd. anyone remember that one?

the only thing bad to come out of this movie was the spate of remakes in other sports. i cant stand any of them. they are all TOO cutesy cutesy, and dont really have the spirit or attitude of Bears. i believe they were all done by disney, so i guess thats the problem.

soccer:big green
hockey:mighty ducks
football:little giants
im sure theres probably a basketball one too, just cant think of it off the top of my head

One really funny thing about the movie was that Mr. Buttermaker wasn't too loyal to one brand of beer. At the beginning of the movie he had Budweiser, then Schlitz in the tall can, then Pabst Blue Ribbon, then what looked like a green bottle with no label, (could it have been Mickey's?) then on to a Red Stripe looking bottle, also with a name I couldn't really make out. He even had one of the Bears making a Martini at one point. And Kelly Leek was the MACK. I love the scene in the ballet lessons, and Kelly was hitting on that older lady.

"I got a Harley..that turn you on?.."

I don't know if anyone watched, but on ESPN2, they featured this movie, and had interviews with the fat kid, and the one who played Olgalvi, and another one. One of them said that the kid who played Tanner, well his family was really religious, and he and his family had a tough time with the language. Erin (Ahmad) Blunt is actually a radio dj personality now.

This movie is one of my all time favorites!!! I love it to this day. The Bad News Bears had a pretty profound impact on me that after seeing it when it came out, that I had my mom sign me up for my first season of little league.

I even tried to get my mom to buy me a moped (not a motorcyle....that would be pushing it), just so I could ride around the outfield and piss off the opposing managers

Just too bad that a classic like this is only a bare-bones dvd.

What would the chance be in paramount deciding to screw with us and released a super-bit/extreme/ultimate edition in the future?

I for one would gladly double dip for this one!!!!!!!!!

Peace Out!!!

I remember first seeing it, when it came out in the theatre.
I saw it on tv recently, and it still holds up. Great film.

I had a crush on Tatum, as did all then. Matthau was perfect.
Jackie Earle Haley gave us a great character, and later went on to do another great film, Breaking Away.

Also, the late Vic Morrow (who died in that helicopter scene in the film Twilight Zone), as the overbearing coach of the champion Yankees, was great.

Nice film all around.

Thanks for the info Unicorn! One of the main reasons I was holding out was I couldn't quite make myself spend over $20 each for the barebones flicks. At the reduced price, I will definitely jump all over it. BB always seems to be out of both BNB and Breaking Training, but I will keep a vigilant eye out for them. I'm out of town for the better part of 3 weeks, so I will hold off and search the B&Ms before resorting to online order.

Some of my favorite quotes:

"Hey Yankees, you can take your apology and your trophy and shove it straight up your ass!"

"An intentional walk with the bases empty? This is baseball not backgammon!"

"I borrowed a nickel from him last week, he said if I didnt give him a dime by Friday he'd break my arm... Eso bandito!"

"C'mon fellas, Rome wasn't built in a day! Yeah, it took several hundred years."

"Any second now Ogilvie, heart attack time."

So needless to say, I grew up on this movie and highly recommend it to anyone, baseball fan or not.

Not likely since Michael Ritchie and Walter Matthau have passed away and Tatum is probably in rehab.

All I know is if ESPN2 repeats this movie with cast interviews like a few months ago, I'M TAPING IT.

And for you BNB fans, here's a link of the TV guide article, from a while back, I'm sure you'll all enjoy.

I actually played Little League in Southern California in 1976. (In fact, my team that year had a track record not too unlike the Bears -- we really stunk!) I didn't see the film until a few years later, but I can vouch for the overall accuracy of the atmosphere captured in the first film -- it was dead-on. If you've ever wondered what suburban life and especially Little League sports was like in Southern California in the mid- to late 70s, THIS is the film to get. No other film has captured that mid-70s suburban California spirit quite so precisely.

Speaking of which, where in blazes IS that movie on DVD? This is one where I could forgive John Landis (or any other of the 4 directors on the film) for not making an audio commentary. But I love that film (plus, it's Vic Morrow's last, and one of his best, film roles).

I know this is kinda off topic here.....but it does tie into baseball and nepotism.

Another favorite movie of mine that features baseball is Max Dugans Return. I saw this movie when it came out in the theathers waaaaaaaay back when. The nepotism part of the question is this. Keifer Sutherland is suppose to have a small cameo in the movie ( it wasnt a cameo in the sense that he was an establish star or anything. In fact, I dont think he had doen anything at all up to that point. His part in the movie was more like......"daddy...put me in the movie....please".

So.....can anyone tell me where he is in the movie. I've seen this movie soooo many times, but have not been able to find him. Its turning my brain into mush!!!!!

Peace Out

Max Dugan was a very good film also. I always watch it when its on. Ive seen it quite a bit. I never knew about Keifer being in it. I'll have to look out for him now.
The first time I ever saw Keifer acting, was in a made for tv movie, where he was about 14 or so. He was playing something like a manic depressive. I didnt really know who he was, or who his father was then, but, could see that he was a talented young actor. Might have been around 1980. Not sure.

With all of the legal drama that went on with that show, don't expect Twilight Zone; The Movie on dvd for a long time. For one, it's an ensemble piece, Spielberg, Dante, Miller, & Landis. Now you know damn well, none of those guys are gonna come to any compromise on any input on the disc, so there's no sense in even waiting.

According to IMDB.com, Tatum made $350,000 for BNB. That is a lot of money for 1976.
