Why not use Dual Layer?

It's a pain having to flip over the DVD and very unattractive? It's worst than WB's snapper case.

It depends on the Studio and/or Title. Lastest is PHONE booth

Why would you have to flip over Phone Booth? Are the supplements split up among the two sides?

Well, for movies shorter than three hours I can understand why it's annoying if they're flipper discs. But--and I know some will disagree--I prefer movies with any running times over 200 minutes to be either flippers or split between two discs. That's about the max I can sit without a break. I know...I could pause it anytime I want, but I like having the break pre-set if you will...makes me feel like I'm in a theatre and the intermission has just kicked in.

I think Apocalypse Now Redux is the longest movie I have which is all on one side of a dual-layer disc...something like 202 minutes. The first time I watched it I almost made it to the end without a bathroom break, but had to get up somewhere in the middle of Willard's and Kurtz' encounter.

Phone Booth on the other hand...I didn't see it, but it's only around 85 minutes long or something, right? What's on the other side of the disc? Fullscreen version? Supplements? Both?

From DVD File's review:
Quote:
Fox Home Entertainment has included both 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and 4:3 full screen transfers on opposite sides of the disc

so, the 4:3 side is basically the label side. Grab a sharpie and write "Phone Booth" on it so it's easier to tell which disc it is at a glance.

Also, Just because it's double-sided doesn't mean that it's not also dual layer. A double sided dual layer disc is known as a DVD-18. I think these days a one sided dual-layer disc (DVD-9) is cheaper to make than a 2 sided single-layer disc (DVD-10), so usually if a studio wants to put out 2 low quality transfers on one disc they opt for the DVD-9.

If you're going to do this, just make sure you write on the side that is labeled "Widescreen" since the Widescreen data is, of course, on the side labeled "Fullscreen."

Great idea! I wonder why I never thought of that. I guess one could also make their own "art" label to out on that side or even write more "creative" things to identify the 4:3 side of the disc.

Peace...

talking about phone booth, i think it's funny that the label says "4:3 Side, Flip over for Widescreen" and then on the back there isn't a label saying it's widescreeen like it's now the standard to have it fullscreen or something. they had this on just married as well.

Shortest movie I can think of that used dual layer was Bride of Frankenstein at 75 minutes.
