Buying DVD's over the counter
I will be visiting the US (washington dc and NYC)from Australia later this year. I wonder can anyone tell me what the prices of DVD's are in the shops? Do they discount their prices as happens on the Net, or are they always MSRP??
Can anyone recommend good DVD stores in NYC or Washington DC? V. |

What you pay in a brick & mortar store depends mostly on the store. Suncoast, I believe, charges MSRP; Best Buy is typically $5 less, with a few bargains here and there. The best thing is to be armed with a few MSRPs and see what a store charges for them.
Really, the cheapest way is still online. I can't help with NYC or DC, though, sorry. ------------------ Better living through money. |

I'm from NYC and I can tell you the store prices don't compare with an online store like Reel.com, cdnow.com, Amazon.com, or Buyvideos.com. A megastore like HMV is pretty much consistent with the Retail prices, so most discs are in a range from $19.99 - $29.99, with SE's being higher of course. Anyway the few discounts are on popular discs and even those never fall below $19.99.

Yes, online is still the best. My best advice is to order stuff online and have it delivered to a friend here in the States. When you get here, pick it up from him/her.
Two warnings: I assume you have a multi-region DVD player. Also, think about the customs implication if you're going to bring back a lot of discs. Dave Bean |
