Trouble with THE ABYSS
i just got THE ABYSS last night...great discs!!! i have noticed a problem though. in the chapter where the NTI ark is floating topside and ed harris walks out of it, i can hear my player's (proscan ps8680z) laser tracking, i.e. moving. it then freezes for a split second on the scene where harris and m.e.m. kiss. it's not bad, but it is noticeable. i'm wondering if there is just TOO MUCH info stored on the disc. any thoughts?

Uh, oh. I don't have the disc yet, but I knew something would come up a la "The Matrix". Hopefully though, it is as minor as you say, and that this will not deter the companies from packing the discs. I bet by the time T2 collector's edition comes out, with it's new layering system, our worries will be over.

It plays fine on my Pioneer 414.
And Matrix-like problems shouldn't be an issue. It was the DVD-ROM content causing the problems with discs like The Matrix. The DVD-ROM content for The Abyss is on the second disc, not the movie disc on which kermit experienced the problem. It's probably either a glitch with the disc, or a compatibility problem with the player. For instance, I can't get any sound to play on The Quiet Man on my Pioneer, though it works fine on every other machine I've tried it in. These things just happen. Try it on another machine, and if it does it in the same place, then it's the disc. If not, it's most likely the player. Also, check to make sure there's no dirt or smudges on the disc surface. I had a Thin Red Line disc that came in the mail with deep scratches on the bottom like someone had taken a cheese grater across the surface. It froze up in every machine I tried it in, and stupid me, it took about fifteen minutes before I even checked the bottom of the disc. |

My player is one of the infamous Samsung 709's, but I've never had any trouble with the MATRIX, however...
Until a couple days ago, the "Men behind the Army" documentary on my ARMY OF DARKNESS-LE would skip and stall and eventually cause the disc to be rejected by the machine. Monday when the Abyss arrived, suddenly no more problems, but... On my Abyss disc, watching the special edition, the disc skips to the next chapter during Bud's watching of "NTV". And there's a visual jog when the film slips into the deleted scenes. Neither problem presents too much of a nuiscance, as I can skip back with the first and try to ignore the second, but it's not exactly the perfection you hope for with a DVD. I think the deleted scenes jog problem may be unavoidable though. My widescreen VHS of ALIENS has the same visual jog when its deleted scenes come on. D'OH! And it would be nice to be able to change from 2 to 5.1 sound on the fly, rather than just at the menu, but perhaps I'm just being nitpicky. But all that aside, I love this edition, really! ![]() AB ------------------ Oh Dear God! It's Growing BIGGER!!! |
