Wanted: Documentaries
Ok, so this is more of a plug for you PBS-types, but...is there a documentary that you guys are dying for on DVD ???
Me ? I want the obscenely LONG, unabridged special that PBS put together a couple of years back. It's the history of New York. It's something like...20+ hours I believe. Dave Bean |

Micheal Apted's "Up" series... I'd like an opportunity to see the whole series from the beginning. As far as I know, no DVD exists for this series, at least in region 1.
Hoop Dreams... still waiting for the DVD on that one, too. |

Definitely Hoop Dreams
The "Up" series would be good too, but I would probably rent rather than buy Ditto on Errol Morris Waco: Rules of Engagement The Burden of Dreams: I wish this had been put with the Fitzcarraldo DVD Heart of Darkness: Should have been on the Apocalypse Now DVD I've got the Ken Burns stuff on video and wouldn't rebuy. I've still never found time to watch them a 2nd time. Werner Herzog's documentaries (My Best Fiend, Little Dieter) are being released by Anchor Bay this Fall/Winter. Hoop Dreams, like everyone else has said, for sure.
But there are really too many to mention. There are tons of PBS stuff, and there are tons of PBS specials like From Jesus to Christ: How Jesus of Nazareth Became Jesus Christ, and there was some Frontline special about Hot Dogs that was really neat, and another one about Apocalyptic literature...all of the Frontline stuff would rock, truth be told. Theatrical docs? Well, American Movie, the still-in-theaters Beyond the Mat, another excellent wrestling documentary called Wrestling With Shadows. Then, there are others - Paradise Lost 1 and 2. And, in the sort-of-documentary category, there are these specials that are made for HBO, six of them so far, called Autopsy: Voices From the Dead which chronicle how sophisticated autopsy techniques have been used to catch criminals and solve crimes that were believed to be unsolvable. Many times, they talk about murders solved years later thanks to a idea that someone might come up with. Really neat. Those would be nice. That's all for now, but there are so many docs out there that would be cool. Not documentaries on their own as such, but documentaries hopefully to be included in some other documentaries (these are all from British TV):
Tracing the French Connection - a stupendous hour-long look at the entire French Connection, occasionally hilarious and about the original case by the team that brought you The Fear of God. All four Withnail & I documentaries from Channel 4 Withnail Weekend (although two of them are five minutes long but are hilarious) on the new Criterion disc (according to Anchor Bay, they have the rights now). Eyes Wide Shut - Stanley Kubrick and the Last Movie Another Channel Four documentary includes some stunningly intimate interviews with his wife and daughters and some HUGE Hollywood names. It really is wonderful and details his personal, misunderstood life and Eyes Wide Shut. The Return of a Clockwork Orange - you may already know this, but after 27 years of being banned in the UK, it came out in cinemas last week to sell-out audiences. This amazing Channel Four hour long documentary is as much about the meaning and making of A Clockwork Orange as it is its mythical quality. The BBC Scene-by-Scene documentary series - documentaries that last an hour with one-on-one scene analysis, anecdotes (like loads of commentary tracks condensed into one - and it works) with directors like Brian DePalma, Martin Scorsese (two of the best), John Boorman (I think) and actors like Terence Stamp and Jack Lemmon. Criterion, these could be for you. Nearly all of the above were shown in 16:9 widescreen, so are anamorphic-ready. |

Well, I don't know if all this counts as documentaries, but here is some "non Movie" stuff I'd love to see on DVD.
The aforementioned Cosmos by Carl Sagan. All the Ken Burns' films (Baseball especially). The Discovery Channels Movie Magic series. I miss these so much. Another Discovery Channel show from the early 90s: The Secret Life of Machines. This show totally rocked. Finally, of all the IMAX films, The Dream is Alive has yet to be released on DVD. SOMEBODY FIX THIS!!! ![]() ------------------ Taxi DVDFile Moderator |

How about the two fantastic insect documentaries, HELLSTROM CHRONICLE (long out of print and only available once on VHS, even though it won an Academy Award) and Mirimax's more recent and less nihilistic MICROCOSMOS?
