Angel and Dark Angel

Well, I'm currently loving my boxsets of The Shield (amazing show! Best cop dramas since "Homicide") and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I'm finally into Season 3 and continue to be thrilled with the show...man they know how to fun with their characters. Always inventive!)

Anyway, wondering how Angel compares. I guess there are lots of crossovers with Buffy later on.

Also, slightly off topic, if I love Buffy will I love Dark Angel? Or should I just wait for Alias ?

Angel is excellent. I found the first season of Angel to be a lot like Buffy, with the soapy elements played down a bit. It's a bit darker, but in the first season at least, maybe not as much as you'd think. They still have quite a bit of fun with the characters (particularly Angel) and the situations. If you're liking Buffy, definitely pick Angel up and watch it with Buffy Season 4 for maximum effect.

I only saw a few episodes of Dark Angel, but it didn't compare to Buffy at all. The writing wasn't nearly as good. It wasn't particularly funny, and I didn't care about the characters. It wasn't as clever or hip as Buffy, either. Basically, it sucked. That's just my opinion, though..

But I will have you know, it is an opinion I value. I do recall having seen some of the pilot and finding it hard to get into. I'll definitely pick up "Angel" though...I just found out that it's still running, and that the character Spike is joining the cast. That actor is terrific, IMO. Can't wait to see how things unfold, but I'm only on episode 3, season 3.

thanks for the info.

So happy to see at least one character transfer over to Angel next year. Love the character of Spike but( Buffy Series Finale Spoiler)
Spoiler (Highlight or Triple Click to Read):
how the hell will they get him back from the Dead dead. (not a typo) Ok Hell i guess is where he would be. Another Darla rebirth? Just like Angel appearing out of no where? Can't wait to see

Anyways i would highly recommend Angel. But i could never get into Dark Angel at all so i would avoid it. Angel season 2 is also just around the cornor so you better hurry up and buy the series so you can be ready for Season 2. (when it started to get its on feet and move away form the Sunnydale connection more and more)

I will get it when I can, but with all these BUFFY episodes...this will take forever to get through.

HEHEH i can understand that. I never watched any Buffy or Angel before but when i started to buy Buf S1, i've watched it in 2 days.. and 22 episode set mostly in 3 days (weekends) ...

Angel S1 is a little darker, 90% is film in the dark. Jokes are funny in a Angel vs Cordilia way... + you get tie in with Buffy Season 4. So i suggest to listen both of them back to back.

Of course i never watched S5,6,7 of Buffy either Season 2,3,4 of Angel but i have my cash ready for Sept 2!

There's the poster promoting S5 of Angel.. i like this one..

First let me say that hardly anything on TV compares to BUFFY so the other shows aren't in the same league.

As for ANGEL, as much as I love Buffy, I always found the character of Angel to be so bland that as much as I tried, I could never get into the TV series. I bought the box set, but haven't been able to pick it up and start watching.

I did get the DARK ANGEL set as well. I only watched it once or twice when it aired. But, I am really loving it. Just finished the second disc. It is a lot of fun. Again, not in the same league as BUFFY, but well worth seeing.

What I like about the Angel S1 boxed set is that it shows how far the series developed initially to the amazing, ambitious fourth season. S1 featured plenty of crossovers with Buffy, but not in a way that would confuse people if you watched the stand-alone episodes. If you're a Buffy fan, you'll probably enjoy Angel--with no new seasons of Buffy, you might as well dig into the Angel sets (and S2 comes out in about a month! ).

I never warmed up to Dark Angel initially, but my fiancée loves the show (of course I suspect her TV tastes, as she prefers Voyager to DS9, doesn't like The Sopranos and has a thing for David Duchovny ). One of these days I might pop in the DVD set and give the show another chance--apparently Nana Visitor was a very good villain.

Should you wait for Alias? I don't know, I've never even seen Alias (but I hear it's good).

To be honest, I agree that the Angel character has been a bit bland...I thought he was great as a villain for awhile in S2. He had some great moments then, but he's no match for the actor playing Spike.

Indy, I'm in much the same boat you are. I never watched Buffy or Angel during the TV seasons, and only got into them since they hit DVD. And, like you, I'm loving the hell out of them. I've watched seasons 1 through 4 of Buffy, and season one of Angel, so I can't wait for the next seasons to come in. They can't arrive fast enough, let me tell you. It's hard fending off spoilers for both shows, though. People who watch it think everyone else does too, so they don't mind throwing out things that happened in the later seasons. I cover my eyes are the first hint of a spoiler. You would be wise to do the same.

One curious outcome of this is that Dark Angel, a show I had really enjoyed while it was on TV, doesn't seem as good anymore in comparison. Alba isn't as funny or as sexy as Sarah Michelle Geller, the fighting isn't as good, and ultimately the show is a weaker cousin. Still, it is a fairly well done show, the mythos is cool enough, and the fella that plays Eyes Only raises the show by his performance. I like him.

All of these shows pale next to the might and majesty of Babylon 5, though! Mwahahaha!!!

As for Angel being bland. I think it workds for his overall charcater. I think in the last season (Season 4) We got to see a lot more of his character himself. He got to be the regular Angel and we got another dose of Evil Angelus. He does such a great job playing Angelus and would like to see more of that personality in him in some more episodes. But with the enclusion of Spike i hope it brings well. . . . some new blood into watching the show. Anyways Buffy fans will need to get their fix somewhere.

Also why is Lorn never included in the opening credits even though he can be considered a main character?

Oh well i'm sure the show will get you hooked pretty fast and the next thing you know. You'll be wanting to buy and watch Season 2 in no time.

good comments guys,

Reaver, you are way ahead of me...I've bought all the Buffy's but I'm not even halfway through S3 yet. Knocking off one or two every night before bed.

I'll probably pick up Angel soon, so I'll have it when I start S4.

Yeah i like James Master character a lot. In Buffy S4 he's so funny in a kind of patetic ways... Anyway i'am discovering those series on dvd as they are released. So Sept 2 is Angel S2, Dec 06 is Buffy S5 .. i guess Buffy season will reach 7 within next year and angel should be up to season 4. I hope they'll do like 24 and release season of Angel (if it get more than 5) 4 months after being showed...

I really like Angel, i actually like it better than Buffy. As for Dark Angel it had a lot of potential that was wasted.
