Actors who's careers went downhill
I remember seeing this TV reality dating show which general has a couple of "celebrity" guests. One of the persons was Sean Young. After seeing her in Blade Runner and other films, I was amazed that this is where her career went. Here are a few more names.
Tom Berenger Ken Wahl Corey Haim Corey Feldman Jan Michael Vincent Mickey Rourke Molly Ringwall John Cryer Cuba Gooding Jr Sly Stallone Jean Claude VanDame Steven Segal Mark Hamil |

Berenger's had some admittedly odd choices in his work, but he's quite employable and works a lot. He was never really star material anyway, "Platoon" notwithstanding. Cuba Gooding Jr.?!? He's had plenty of good roles since Jerry Maguire (as well as some roles which didn't fly so well). The guy's NOT boring, that's for sure. Even Pacino's made some duds ("Revolution", anyone? Heck - "Gigli"?!?) Molly Ringwald virtually chucked her US film career and went to France for several years, but actually has returned in some decent small roles. Jan Michael Vincent's ENTIRE LIFE went downhill. His career just happened to go along with it. Mickey Rourke I can't figure out. I still think his best work is the unloved (except by me) Oliver Stone-written "Year of the Dragon". Mark Hamill. Hmm. Well, really, where could he possibly have gone after "Star Wars", especially with his hammy acting style? "Star Wars" was never really a particularly meaty series for actors anyway. He's a living toon nowadays. Even Carrie Fisher pretty much gave up acting for writing. Harrison Ford was the real lottery winner of the original Star Wars cast. (Billy Dee Williams - THERE'S a guy whose career went downhill.) If you really want to talk actors whose careers have gone downhill, look at Robert DeNiro! He's gone from Mean Streets, Godfather II, Taxi Driver, Goodfellas and Raging Bull, some of the greatest American films ever, to scenery-chewing twaddle like The Fan, Meet the Parents, Analyze This (and That) and (christ almighty) The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. |

Harrison Ford.
I think he only, "came into his own", as competent actor, in "Wintness", the "Tom Clancy" set of films, and "The Fugitive", rather, than the usual role we remember him by. By and large, his career has been extremely spotty and mediocre. If he DIDNT do "Indiana Jones", he would NOT have been given the subsequent films that he has, since then. With "Indiana Jones", he became more than an actor...a personality....and that's rare these days. But, unfortunately, personality isn't enough...you have to deliver the goods, and consistently. He hasn't delivered, the potential, he promised us. |

Matthew McConaughey
Kevin Costner (Thirteen Days is one of my favorites mostly because of things other than Costner) I also have to agree on Harrison Ford. He's had one, maybe two watchable movies since the Fugitive 10 years ago.

Tom Berenger's got his new USA Networks series "Peacemakers", which I hear isn't too bad. Haven't watched it though. I think DeNiro is the king of this category. I honestly can no longer get even remotely excited when he's set to star in a movie. All those comedies do absolutely nothing for me. What about Sharon Stone? The last good movie she was in was probably Casino. Since then, it's been all crap. Now she's succumbed to sleeping with the AOL logo on TV. Poor girl. Has Kim Basinger done anything since L.A. Confidential?

I'm sorry, I probably wouldn't say anything, but everyone dissing de niro is making me teary eyed. such a wonderful actor. Maybe he had a few bad movies (The Score, Analyze That, City By The Sea).
But come on. He's still making some great stuff: 15 Minutes, Meet The Parents, Analyze This, Wag The Dog, Ronin, Jackie Brown, Casino, Goodfellas, etc. He still has it, and those who say he went downhill is not a de niro fan.

I think of Berenger as almost a character actor. Just when you think he's "done", he turns up in something else interesting or at least decent. I think he was supposed to be "the next Paul Newman" after Butch and Sundance and Looking for Mr Goodbar, but he never really went the movie star route. Look at his resume, and every few years he shows up in something pretty good.
He's been around for a long time, so it's only understandable that careers start downward when the actor gets older. The one who really stands out as a "what the hell happened" is Sean Young. She apparently just went bonkers. Remember the appearance on Joan Rivers when she was campaigning for the Catwoman role in Batman Returns? She came on in her own home-made Catwoman suit and poured cat litter in her chair before sitting down? ![]() |

Too many "wrong" choices. And only one, film franchise success. But this business is so whacky, there are really no such things as has-beens...just never-was's. Dan Ankroyd, at least, matured into dramatic roles, to become a multi-faceted actor...though I don't know what he is doing currently. |

It's interesting how "downhill" is defined here. You can be a year removed from making a blockbuster movie and be defined as an actor whose career has gone 'downhill.' Heck, by that definition, why don't we include Gene Hackman and Jack Nicholson to the list? Hey, Robert Redford hasn't made a great movie in ages--even though he should be collecting SOCIAL SECURITY now--so his career MUST be going downhill. Robert Duvall and Dustin Hoffman, too, for that matter!
Of course, these guys are all unforgettable actors finally stopping to smell the roses a bit after decades of great performances. I have a hunch that's the tack Pacino and DeNiro are taking too. They see how much B.S. an actor goes through to land a prestige role anymore, so they just are content to go with the scripts they like. Even Steve Martin, Michael Douglas, Robin Williams and Harrison Ford, as well as even younger actors like Gary Sinise, are doing that, to a degree--of course, one could argue Ford's been doing that since The Fugitive, with dismaying results. Sometimes I wish to God he'd just go back to carpentry, honestly. And of course nobody's addressed the issue of actresses who disappear from the silver screen after a certain age because of the overt double standard in casting older people. Meryl Streep is probably the only current exception to this unfortunate standard. Posters like wahlers have the right idea: actors like Steve Guttenberg, Judge Reinhold, Sean Young and Sharon Stone are the real ones whose careers went downhill--not because they are prevented by prejudice or age from attaining them, but because of, to put it bluntly, their own bad career moves. Add these names, then, to that list: Milla Jovovich Daniel Stern Heather Graham Eddie Murphy Joe Pesci Faye Dunaway (could have been like Streep, but too much of a prima donna) Jerry O'Connell and don't forget Madonna

Georgep, are you Alec Baldwins agent?
Seriously, I think "downhill" would have to imply that they were considered significantly "uphill" at some point in their acting career. Additionally, EITHER no fault of their own(great actor who just cant get a job) or entirely their fault(bad role choices), their acting career has become obscure. Thats my definition, and Im sticking to it ![]()

...but Reynolds is still the man.
He's like Jesus. What's Jesus done lately? Nothing for nobody. But he still has that huge fanbase. I can't wait for the second coming of Reynolds. For even more blasphemous fun, Mary Magdalene = Lonnie Anderson. |

It's gotta be Kevin Costner. Evidence to prove it.
Late 80's to Early 90's: Nice mix of box office hits and acclaimed films.
Mid 90's to Present: Nice mix of shite.

John Travolta is going down. Remember when there were like, five Travolta movies a year following Pulp Fiction, and most of them turned a profit? Now he's stuck in drecky flops like Basic and Battlefield Earth. :flush:

Exactly what i was going to say. He is my favourite Joker for Batman and does great jobs at other voice over work too. I loved him in Bruno the Kid But Cuba Gooding Jr. is one i would put on my list. He was shown the money and never once a good script again (Rat Race, Snow Dogs, Boat Trip, Chill Factor and so on) Hopefully his next movie will put him on track again. It does play football in it
