Criterion's November 2003 releases (Unbelievably good!... in my eyes)

This is coming pretty soon after the October news but...

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=News&id=4975

Coming in November, several long-awaited gems (no specs or covers yet):
- David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch
- Jean Renoir's The Rules of the Game
- Federico Fellini's La Strada
- Laurence Olivier's Richard III

Didn't see Naked Lunch coming!!! What a fantastic surprise). A relationship with Fox and Criterion has emerged perhaps? Beautiful. More Criterion Cronenberg is great news.
The Rules of the Game was a long time coming and a perrenial Top 10 of all-time list maker.
My plans are to buy the first 3 listed above. This has been a tremendous year for Criterion!

Also listed as news in that link is Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Cure (not Criterion, but from sister/ parent company Home Vision). A horror movie from a couple years back that's I've longed to see.

I'm sure asphodel will be along eventually with potential specs/ covers.

I can find two things wrong with that title.

And parent company or not, EWWWWWWWWWWWW on 'Cure'. My seething hatred for the non-horror, slow, ridiculous, annoying Kiyoshi Kurosawa is deepening. :p

Except for his production work on 'Ju-On: The Grudge', that is.

It's delightful to finally see "Naked Lunch" come to DVD - I guess I won't be buying the old VHS

Hopefully they'll get Cronenberg to give a commentary. I always enjoy hearing his thoughts on, well, just about anything.

for "La Strada" and "Rules of the Game" - two classics that I can't believe I still have yet to see. If I'm not mistaken, these two titles were announced 2 years ago, but ended up being indefinitely postponed. Good to see rights issues or whatever was preventing them form being released, are finally cleared up. With these two, along with "Knife in the Water" it's like the old-Criterion-announcements-return-from-the-dead year - yipiee!

I've never seen Naked Lunch, or read it, for that matter, though a few friends have recommended reading it, and I've really liked every Cronenberg movie I've seen so far (Dead Ringers, The Fly, Existenz, Scanners, The Dead Zone). I'll probably end up blind-buying it..

The book lacks the narrative that Cronenberg brings to the film... Naked Lunch was long considered "unadaptable" for a reason.

But if you're a Cronenberg fan, you'll like this movie!

Guess I'm the exception - though there might be a complicating factor. I have always liked Cronenberg's films, and I strongly like Burrough's book, so I had high hopes when i finally saw this - here's the catch - on VHS.

I wasn't impressed. Interesting, yes. Well-done, perhaps. But to me it lacked the brilliant, blistering talent of its creators, and seemed largely to skirt the crucial issue of the narrator's sexuality, and the political environment of the 50s. I was neither astonished nor repulsed. Just amused on occasion.

In any case, while I look forward to seeing it again - seeing it properly for the first time, I should say - I'm going to rent before purchase. (Unless, of course, the extras are amazing.)

Weele axulinde.

Well, I laughed when I heard there was an adaptation of Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut being filmed, because I thought it would be impossible to adapt, and I was surprised at how good of an adaptation it turned out to be, and how much I enjoyed it, so I wouldn't be too surprised.

Awesome news about Naked Lunch! I was hoping for a release sometime soon but I never expected it to be a Criterion. I haven't seen the others but seeing as how I like Fellini's work I'll probably check out La Strada.

It looks like we won't be seeing the Rules of the Game DVD in November, but in this case, I welcome the delay.

"New Film Find Changes Rules of the Game

Jean Renoir's classic The Rules of the Game had been slated for release at the end of 2003, but that will change thanks to the discovery this week of a film element previously thought to be lost. Criterion's staff had already spent months on the new high-definition master that was to be at the heart of a two-disc special edition when a French lab finally unearthed the fine-grain master of the reconstructed version, one generation closer to the original than anything previously available. A similar discovery delayed the release of another Renoir classic, Grand Illusion, intended to be Criterion's first release. Expect The Rules of the Game in early 2004."

I have SOOOOO been waiting for a nice edition of Naked Lunch, so I can ditch the full frame LD. That it's going to be a Criterion with all the possibilities that entails, only makes it better! My wallet sighs in pain, due to the already heavy toll taken on it by the third quarter this year, but... Bring it on!

I've been waiting a long time for this announcement. I sounds like I will not be let down!

La Strada-
New high-definition digital transfer, with restored image and sound

Video introduction by Martin Scorsese

Audio commentary by Peter Bondanella, author of The Cinema of Federico Fellini

Federico Fellini’s Autobiography, a 2000 documentary originally broadcast on Italian television

Optional English-dubbed soundtrack featuring the voices of Anthony Quinn and Richard Basehart

New essay by film scholar Peter Matthews

New and improved English subtitle translation

Optimal image quality: RSDL dual-layer edition

There has never been a face quite like that of Giulietta Masina. Her husband, the legendary Federico Fellini, directs her as Gelsomina in La Strada, the film that launched them both to international stardom. Gelsomina is sold by her mother into the employ of Zampanò (Anthony Quinn), a brutal strongman in a traveling circus. When Zampanò encounters an old rival in highwire artist the Fool (Richard Basehart), his fury is provoked to its breaking point. With La Strada, Fellini left behind the familiar signposts of Italian neorealism for a poetic fable of love and cruelty, evoking brilliant performances and winning the hearts of audiences and critics worldwide. The Criterion Collection is proud to present La Strada, winner of the Academy Award® for Best Foreign Film in 1956.

Wow, I really like that cover for Naked Lunch. Looks like it should be a nice disc. I'll likely pick it up and rent the others for the time being.

Here is La Strada. I would buy it no matter what, but I happen to like this cover. Oh, one other thing. Richard III hasn't shown up on the coming soon page yet. It sounds like a delay, but I can't be sure.

Honestly, I really dislike that "La Strada" cover. Something about it is very off-putting

The cover for "Naked Lunch", however, is spectacular.

I think all of the covers are very nicely done (at least nicer than the stuff we usually see from the other studios) and I have to agree with Soggy the Naked Lunch cover is particularly wonderful, I can't wait to get my hands on that DVD.

I did some Hitchcock related Criterion reading today and during so got all interested in some of their upcoming releases. Naked Lunch and Knife in the Water seem like purchases to me.

You can read an excellent review of Knife in the Water here.
