Does "Doctor Zhivago" count? I know it takes place at least MOSTLY in winter.

I believe the obscure late 70s Paul Newman-starrer "Quintet" takes place in the midst of a new Ice Age, so that's a shoo-in.

"A Christmas Story" takes place in winter. So do "Miracle on 34th Street", "It's a Wonderful Life", and "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians".

How about "Downhill Racer", the 1969 Redford/Hackman movie about Olympic skiing?

That's all I can think of just off the top of my head.

Of course, Zhivago is the MOTHER of all winter films!

"Home for the Holidays" with Holly Hunter. Not a very good winter film, but a winter film nevertheless.

Technically,

Doctor Zhivago, The Shining and It's a Wonderful Life all have scenes outside of winter. In fact, IAWL has so many flashbacks that it takes place in each of the seasons, I believe. And The Shining's first 30 minutes or so are set in late fall (November). Anyone who has seen the remake understands this.

Perhaps we should rename this thread to "Films with the most memorable 'winter' scenes." It's tough to remember a film that took place ENTIRELY in winter. Ghost Story, a very "wintry" film, also included "summer" flashbacks. Same with Snow Falling on Cedars. And we don't want to get started on which season it would be outside of Hoth in "Empire." lol

How about these candidates?

Nobody's Fool
Ethan Frome
To Build a Fire (Jack London short story)
White Fang
The Lion in Winter

That's why I kept "entirely" in parentheses.

My favourite, The Shining was mentioned. Beautiful winter scenes. There are not nearly enough purely winter movies.

I'll add The Ice Storm. One of my personal favourites.
As well as Scrooged. Bill Murray at his finest.

I haven't seen it yet, but perhaps Smila's Sense of Snow? I recall the trailer being all winter-y.

Don't the parentheses suggest necessity? Are you now recanting on that necessity? What are we if we don't stick to the parameters initially laid? Beasts!

I'm so tired.

No, those parentheses don't suggest necessity. Underlining "entirely" would suggest it. These parentheses loosen the requirement (at least it does in German grammatical sense).

I'm too. And trying to watch Tarkovsky'zzzz Solaris doesn't help.

Why would you apply German grammatical sense to the English language? Wouldn't it be incorrect to obversely apply English grammatical sense when communicating in German?

AFAIK special characters have the same meaning in both languages.

How about "Love Story". . . Ali McGraw, Ryan O'Neal & Ray Milland. I think 75% of that story happens between two winters.
