The DVD's of 2000

2000 is looking more and more like it's going to be a landmark year in DVD. Especially with all the rumored (and known) special editions coming. What's everyone looking forward to the most?

For the big stuff I can't wait for the Wave 2 Bond discs, the possible BTTF discs, and those New Platinum SE's of SEVEN, MAGNOLIA and BOOGIE NIGHTS!!

I'm also hotly anticipating NASHVILLE, SLEEPY HOLLOW, AMERICAN BEAUTY, and lots of others!!

Well, for me the disc that will make 2000 is The Princess Bride, although it has now lost it's SE status, and will be bare bones. They'll probably release the SE version in 2001, after I've paid my money for the movie-only one this year. (Those Bastards!)

As for SE's coming out, I'm eagerly awaiting my copy of The Abyss to arrive. Should have been in yesterday's mail, but wasn't, (&!*@ing DVDExpress...) as well as the MIB disc.

So far, Cannibal: The Musical is my fave DVD. Not only did the movie get a better mastering than I ever imagined I'd see on such a low-budget picture (except maybe El Mariachi, and that has some well publicized screwups with the original negative that caused a few of the shots used to be extra muddy), but the presentation here is fantastic.

The opening menu screen has Trey Parker as Juan Schwartz as Alferd Packer, with his eyes and jaw moving around a la Terry Gilliam's Monty Python animations. The jump to a scene screen has moving video in each of the boxes (something I've only seen on Dead Alive up till now). And all of the major sections feature a different song/video clip. All in all, Troma went all out on this title, and it's packed to the gills with extras (about half for Cannibal itself, and half Troma promos).

I've mentioned the inebriated commentary track in another thread, but it bears repeating: hysterical, and also illuminating. You see that all too rarely.

Neither did I Sid, but I'm sure it will be a great looking disc, and strangely, now that I'm fan of the beautiful Sophie Marceau, I can justify owning it. I didn't think the film was awful, but at the time I was upset that LEAVING LAS VEGAS was shut out of the Best Picture category
