New Warner SE - NOT anamorphic
I have read from multiple sites, DVD-Daily newsletter, & from looking at Amazon & Express.com that Twister & Interview (the new special edition in June) are not going to be anamorphic due to the amount of new material going onto the discs. (I have no idea about the Lethal Weapon re-issues).
For awhile I have scoffed at this information, but the more and more I see it, I am becoming concerned that this could be true? Anyone, have any hard proof to refute me? (Please do, you would make my day!) |

Um, I think "Twister" will have anamorphic since Warner is prob. taking the original video from the previous DVD (at least it will look better due to RSDL dual layer).
I don't know about "Interview..." though. |

Howdy
Warner told me via phone that they will be anamoprhic. The problem is, like so many studios (sigh), they just say "widescreen" on the press and sales info and don't often specify anamorphic. Grrrr.... So, I'll cross my fingers, though I'm most worried about the Lethal Weapon films not being anamorphic... ------------------ Peter M. Bracke Editor |

Peter,
No official word on if they actually did a "clean-up" on the original Twister video transfer? I remember reading some info about how WHV and Mr. Speilburg wanted to remaster this title in particular due to the MPEG artifacts and obviously poor compression. I have no doubt that Twister will be anamorphically enhanced- the original disc is. But I was hoping that they'd go to the trouble of cleaning up an early and I'd bet largely experimental, rough transfer job, since many folks would consider this a great A/V demo disc if the video side was improved. Either way I'm getting it for what I'm hoping will be a kick-a#@ DTS soundtrack. James(Jay)M. |

Hi
Well, the issue of doing a new transfer versus reauthoring it are two different things. While the transer of Twister on the original DVD was good (I thought), the compression was not. Of course, it was an early title, so I guess it is good for a start. Since the disc is now dual-layer and has new features, it has to be entirely rencoded, so chances are the compression will be much, much better. As for a new transfer, seems doubteful, as I believe a high-def master was done back in 1996 for the film, as was the original anamoprhic downconversion. I'd guess that a new encoding job should do the trick...but perhaps I'm just overly optimistic! ------------------ Peter M. Bracke Editor |
