Once Upon a Time in America "limited edition"

At the end of every month (the last tuesday of a month or later), I compile a list of new releases coming out for the next month I want (DVDs from amazon.com, games from ebgames.com, etc). As I was looking through September, I noticed an...anomaly. I've been planning on purchasing "Once Upon a Time in America" for a while, but this caught my eye:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...s=dvd&n=507846

Now, the way I buy DVDs are if I buy something I want to make sure I get the best bang for my buck. That's why even though I absolutely love Goodfellas, The Shawshank Redemption and Casino, I haven't bought the DVDs and won't until they get the treat they deserve rather than the poor treatment they got. So I figure I might as well wait and get this version.

I haven't heard anything about it, so I felt I might inform some people and maybe some people could also inform me as to what this edition includes.

This is the same deal that Warners has done with some of their other titles (Exorcist, Matrix, etc.) All they do is take the current special edition DVD release, and package it in an, admittedly cool, box along with a soundtrack CD, full-color softback book about the film, and full-color, full-size lobby card reproductions.

These sets are great if you are a big-time fan of the film, they tend to be limited and collectible, but as far as 'bang-for-your-buck' DVDs, unless you live and breath this movie, you are better off with the new double disc release.

Hey, the current 'Casino' disc isn't so bad. Decent transfer, fair price. They managed to fit it all on one side, which is more than I can say for 'Goodfellas'.

Or 'Gangs of New York', for that matter.

I sure you Know that the Disc content is the same, Warner's just adding some stills or lobby cards, a film frame, and a poster reprint and maybe a soundtrack like they do with all their limited editions. I personally don't think it's worth 30+ dollars, but if your a die hard fan go for it.

Nevermind larphillips beat me.

What about GANGS? I haven't watched my copy yet. What is wrong with the disc?

Gangs is spanned across 2 discs.

I'm sure when you saw it was 2 discs, you assumed movie on one, extras on the other.

Nope.

But at least Gangs has awesome picture quality. Goodfellas is 1 double sided DVD that looks like an SVCD.

A poorly encoded SVCD to be if that.

It's split across 2 discs, if that kinda thing bothers you... it clearly bothers Frank Gunn a bit.

Awwww crap. Yeah, that kind of thing DOES bother me.

In my estimation, just as bad as a 'flipper disc.' Hell, if you have a single disc player like I do, then that means getting my lazy ass up and switching discs. But, and more importantly, it interrupts the flow of the movie for me. I'm not a big fan of stopping or pausing a movie in mid-play. That is why I like the theater experience so much.

If the studios can fit all 179 minutes of 'The Two Towers' on one disc and make it look as amazing as they do, they should be able to do the same for little ol' 167-minute 'Gangs Of New York'. It was just plumb idiotic to spread the extras across both discs. Who the hell thought of that?

To be honest, I'm surprised more people weren't pissed about it.

What were those extras on the R2 disc ?

I never understood WHY, they didn't give us the WHOLE Leone documentary ? Was it a rights issue ?
