September 2003 Home Vision titles
I just received an email from Home Vision Entertainment (HVE) that announces their September titles. I haven't seen any of it mentioned here, but feel free to merge/delete the thread if I missed something.
"Available September 23! Murderous Maids “A riveting re-telling of the most sensational French crime of the 20th Century.”—J. Hoberman, VILLAGE VOICE Class struggle, incest, and murder are at the heart of France’s most horrific crime of the 20th century. In Murderous Maids, director Jean-Pierre Denis paints a provocative portrait of the notorious Papin sisters that is sympathetic yet unapologetic. The sisters, Christine and Lea, are forced into servitude by their self-absorbed mother and become increasingly outraged by the injustice of their position. The sisters find solace in each other, and their relationship becomes all-consuming. When their secret is threatened, they lash out. 2000 • France • Runtime 94 min. • Color • DVD • In French with optional English subtitles Tricheurs From the director of Single White Female, Barfly, and Reversal of Fortune! Exploring themes of addiction, sexual power games, and compulsive behavior, Barbet Schroeder’s Tricheurs is a powerfully impudent look into the world of gambling addicts. Bulle Ogier (Discreet Charm of Bourgeoisie, Maitresse) is cast among a stylish milieu of gamblers on the Portuguese island of Madeira. There she becomes involved with a slick gamblers’ scheme to run the roulette wheel. 1983 • France • Runtime 94 min. • Color • DVD • In French with optional English subtitles •"

Both of these titles sound excellent. I definitely have to look for them when they're released.
Murderous Maids sounds similar to Heavenly Creatures, except for the fact they are sisters. It sounds as though the story was well documented, yet I have to say I'm not familiar with it. But even with the story clearly laid out, it will still be interesting to see what circumstances led to that end. While Murderous Maids sounds good, I have a greater interest in Tricheurs. I find the gambling scene and gamblers, in general, to be fascinating. Addiction in any form is bad, but with gambling the highs are glamorized, and many times even rewarded. This one has definitely piqued my interest. |

Both of these titles will end up at the top of my netflix list around their release dates. Soggy is an advocate for Murderous Maids and I have been interested in seeing it since I heard about it on Rialto's website. I also enjoy gambling/addiction movies. Added to that, Bulle Ogier plays one of my favorite characters in Discreet Charm. How ever you look at it, both titles sound like they will be well worth seeing.

Hooray! "Murderous Maids" was probably my second favorite film released last year (right behind "Punch Drunk Love"), and I have been eagerly anticipating a DVD announcement.
I'm not sure wether I'll actually buy it, but I might give it a rent, just to see it again. Now at least people will actually know what 'm talking about when I mention this film.
