The Outer Limits Season 1 and 2 worth a blind buy?
So I checked the Bargain Area part and saw in the Best Buy thread that next week if you buy both season 1 and 2 of The Outer Limits that you'll get $20 off the total price which would then come down to $80 total, which is a really good deal. Problem is I haven't seen many of them. I am a HUGE fan of The Twilight Zone, it's in my top 3 favorite shows of all time. I only got a chance to catch a couple of The Outer Limits shows before Sci-Fi got rid of them. So......................is it worth a blind buy??????

Re: The Outer Limits Season 1 and 2 worth a blind buy?
I only have season 1 and I love them. The quality of the show varied greatly depending on the director/writer of each episode. The range of quality goes from bad to some of the best writing/directing ever seen on TV. The Twilight Zone seems to be much more consistent in quality. The Season one DVD is nice, even though it is bare-bones. Not one extra is on the discs. However I find the picture quality to be nice (granted I am not the best judge of this as I just watch the shows on a 32" Sony Wega, nothing too fancy and it seems to hide DVD flaws nicely). I cannot remember what the sound is like, so probably it is OK. Nothing too nice to stand out, and not crappy then what I would expect (otherwise I would have remembered) for a show of this age. Another plus is having over 27 hours of programming.
I dunno if liking Twilight Zone means you'll like The Outer Limits, as both shows differ greatly, however if you like classic sci-fi TV shows, then this set is a must. PS $80 seems expensive to me, I believe I will pay about $80 total, but in Canadian money - about 58 bucks US...

If you like television programs that
1) Do not insult the intelligence of the viewer 2) Indeed try to engage or stimulate the intelligence of the viewer then I think The Outer Limits is for you. The show is inconsistent. Some shows are some the finest sci-fi every filmed. Some are outright horrible. Some might even scare the living crap out of you. Production values tend to be very good, with much of the B&W cinematography by Conrad Hall. On the whole though I would rate the series as very good-excellent and worthy of sharing a place in television history alongside with the Twilight Zone. Since I haven't picked up Season 1 yet (lack of funds) I think I'll check the Best Buy bargain out. Thanks for the heads up. |

Though I think the Twilight Zone series was a much better crafted show and had better writing over all, it also had Serling and more time to get it right. If you like 50s Sc Fi I would say get both. It is not exactly Twilight Zone, but similar in feel. Of course, OL is also an hour show where Zone was only 30 minutes.
I hate to say spend the $80 for sure, but if you like TZ and 50s sci fi....get them and you'll have plenty of hours of viewing pleasure! |

While there are some real duds in season two ("Behold, Eck!" comes to mind), there are still some real gems in the shortened 17-episode final season (there's a fantastic two-parter starring Robert Duvall, but the title escapes me).
The Outer Limits is more sci-fi than The Twilight Zone's fantasy, but both shows look great on DVD (I recently bought the final TZ set to complete the series). Both use excellent guest actors and the B/W photography sparkles on DVD! The $80 deal sounds like a bargain (here in Canada the cheapest I found the S1 OL set was $55!), so if you're a fan of TZ and appreciate an intelligent anthology series, you should pick it up.
