A scientific conclusion: DVD hates Robert De Niro!

I was doing some DVD shopping the other day (Picked up Once Upon a Time in America, True Romance, Dark City ($5.99 at Best Buy!), and Donnie Brasco), and I've noticed something.

I keep a list of movies I want to buy or check out in a document file. A lot of them were mob movie classics. I decided a few months ago I refuse to buy any DVD that should get the SE treatment that has a crap version out. The means that I know something like American Psycho for example won't get a SE ever, but the Shawshank Redemption deserves it and will.

Anyway, among this list of movies are many De Niro classics. What have I noticed?

DVD companies hate De Niro!

Now, I know some of his films have SEs, such as Once Upon a Time in America, but many don't. Some are "coming soon", but I use that term loosely seeing as how Goodfellas had pretty much all the extras in the can by April 2002.

Anyway:

Heat
Casino
A Bronx Tale
Goodfellas
Raging Bull
Deer Hunter

Damn you, Hollywood! Show this man some respect and put out some SEs!

I wouldn't say that! Lions Gate just got their titles back from other studios are beginning to put out their own "Signature Series" versions out. They have already done it with lots of their titles and I would expect to see American Pyscho next year

Heat is the movie that deserves a S.E. the most, but also the unlikeliest to get one of that list.
Casino is a sure bet for a S.E. And since it's a Universal picture I'm betting for, yes, a Criterion release!
A Bronx Tale? Very unlikely.
Goodfellas - November.
Raging Bull - soon and certainly with more features than the 2 disc UK S.E.
Deer Hunter - again Universal and maybe Criterion. Until then get the newly released UK S.E.!

But let's not forget already released awesome De Niro S.E.'s (other than you mentioned): Cape Fear, The Godfather 2, Taxi Driver, Brazil, The Mission, Jackie Brown, Meet the Parents and the soon to be re-released Mean Streets. See? not all that bad for Mr. D.

I didn't know Cape Fear had a SE. I'll have to check that out.

Where, praytell, are you getting a November date for a Goodfellas SE? November 2004 maybe. :P

Any news/links you could post about it would be welcome.

That's the hardest part. Today everything is different. There's no S.E. DVD. I have to wait around like everyone else. Can't even get decent date confirmation sources. Right after I got here I ordered a fine transfer with some bonus materials and I got a bare bones flipper. I'm an average nobody. I get to live the rest of my life like a schnook...

... dananananananananana
And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain...

Did anyone forget the 3-disc SE Brazil Criterion? That was a good SE for DeNiro...

Well, lets not forget that its directed by Micheal Mann, that guy isnt a very big fan of special features. (He did record a commentary for The Hurricane)

Re: De Niro DVDs

I'd love to see a Goodfellas Special Edition, as well as a Heat SE! They would be must haves.

Anyway, if the Goodfellas SE is coming in November, can someone show us a link or reference?

Mean Streets came to mind immediately as a disc that badly needs upgrading. Raging Bull too. I was more annoyed at their non-anamorphic transfers than the lack of features, which is why I haven't bought them. We desperately need to see improved versions of these.

For KSC2-303: Cape Fear is indeed a very nice two-disc set featuring a whopping 80-minute documentary on the second disc, a few other extras, and both Dolby Digital and DTS soundtracks for the movie. Well worth your time and $$$, IMO.

Yes.

Did he perhaps record a commentary for Ali, another film about a boxer (and the only film of his I don't especially like)?

I know he did a commentary for Thief and the new DVD of Manhunter, so he can't be that much of a "hater".

The Goodfellas SE release he mentioned as being in November is for REGION 2 only. Lucky Europe.

Region 1 has to wait until 2004 to get it...but we're getting extras supplements to make the wait worthwhile.

Don't ask for the info source, I cannot share it.

There could very well be one on The Hurricane but I don't own the DVD. We were just saying that Norman Jewison directed The Hurricane, not Michael Mann.
