Top 10 Best Looking Films of the 90s

This is based on production design, cinematography, costuming, makeup, or any other thing that might affect the visual aspect of any given film. For my list, I've ranked 20 titles, but I put "10" in the subject line, since probably most will want to limit themselves to that.

Here's the list...

1. In Dreams
2. Dark City
3. Sleepy Hollow
4. Batman Returns
5. Dracula - Coppola
6. Lost Highway
7. City of Lost Children
8. American Beauty
9. Ratcatcher
10. Alien Resurrection

11. Edward Scissorhands
12. The End of the Affair
13. Eyes Wide Shut
14. Seven
15. The Pillow Book
16. Fight Club
17. The English Patient
18. The Insider
19. Rushmore
20. L.A. Confidential

Whee!

Arigato,
Brook

(10 is too fuckin much. Not for me to compile but to read from others. If you had said 5 (and people get their act together and not tend to throw in dozens more for "good" measure) this would've been a kick ass thread. Now with 10 - 20 films per poster I'm simply not interested... )
But nevermind me.

As Soggy outlined in the first post, they are films from the 1990s that we think have the best "production design, cinematography, costuming, makeup, or any other thing that might affect the visual aspect of any given film".

I wish I was at home to compile a more comprehensive list of my own, from my various other lists I have laying around (and I will when I do get home), but for now, and Reidenschnieder will like this, I can only base a first draft of my list from this thread (top 10 photographed movies of alltime) and whatever films happen to be from the 90s. So for now....here's 5:

01. Ratcatcher, 1999, dir: Lynne Ramsay
02. Jacob's Ladder, 1990, dir: Adrian Lyne
03. Buffalo '66, 1998, dir: Vincent Gallo
04. Breaking the Waves, 1996, dir: Lars von Trier

I will expand it tonight I hope with more films and perhaps even different ones when I consider things like costumes, makeup and production design.

Come on, guys. It's easy to simply list 10 films "in no particular order". It's actually interesting to see how different people would rank different films, so if you're going to participate, try to put in the effort to rank them

Come on Soggy! I've picked 10 movies out of all the movies I saw during the decade....... I don't think I'm able to differ between number 4 and 8 anyway

1.Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - A visual splendor.

2. Moulin Rouge - Always interesting to watch, always an amazing spectacle. It blends amazingly joyous dancing with drama I have rarely seen before. The shots of Paris, the slow motion cuts of people in the street, my God there is just too much to say about this movie.

3.Minority Report - The movie was just OK, but the visual style Spielberg used for the future and the "precogs" was excellent...

4.A.I. was almost as good, with the moon scene being a standout...

5. 12 Monkeys - From the credits to the bear scene, you know Gilliam is taking you to a future you've never seen before. The dreams and the visions are amazingly visually interesting.

6. Dark City - Reminds me of a living Graphic Novel more than any other film... so many artistic still shots it's amazing...

7. Jackie Brown - One hell of a well shot movie.
From Bridget Fonda's feet to Sam Jackson in the car, this movie is always throwing great angles and looks on the screen.

8. Fight Club - Not exactly original in the zoom and paiuse effects, but certainly the most well done. As much as I am starting to get tired of quick cuts that try to keep you interested in a shit story, in this movie it worked very well (and the story was pretty good too!).

9. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - I am not a huge fan of these films but I enjoy them, and the end battle of this one is one amazingly well shot battle sequence, not to mention the rest of the film as well. Nothing innovative, but certainly well done.

10. Eyes Wide Shut - Call me a Kubrick fanboy, but this movie is of course very well shot and set-up. I especially love the use of the masks in the orgy scene, and Tom Cruise's facial expressions actually being used for drama, rather than masturbation.

Well I just noticed it's the 90's and not the last ten years like the other thread, but I put too much thought into this... so... sorry Soggy.

10. Dances With Wolves - because I'm a sucker for an epic

9. Ed Wood - As shitty, cheap and murky as a Wood film, but to great effect. I could't pull my eyes from the screen.

8. JFK - really gave us a new approach to cinematography and I loved the mix of film stocks.

7. Sleepy Hollow - Burton always creates such a complete world for both the cast and the audience to immerse themselves in.

6. Schindler's List - Black & white photography actually shot on B&W stock... beautiful

5. Saving Private Ryan - I loved the washed out grain, and the odd shutter speeds. It gave it a sense of hyper-realism so as not to lessen the impact.

3. Terminator 2: Judegement Day - Steel and flesh and fire and blood and effects that blew us all away at the time. Pure eye candy.

2. Silence Of The Lambs - some of the best found locations in the 90's... and damn if the bulk of the movie wasn't all shot in Pittsburgh.

1. I have to give my nod to Bram Stoker's Dracula. Really, a trash heap of a movie, but so beautiful to look at. Also, the old-style trick photography was fun to see on screen again.

I'll throw in Raise the Red Lantern. Its a beautiful film by Zhang Yimou. Too bad we've never gotten a decent DVD release of it.

Using guzzlefish I was able to separate my collection to just 90's movies and anything else I'd mention has already been listed multiple times.

Unless, of course, the bland and commonplace style of lighting and framing used to photograph Farley's amazing weight is to be considered superior to masterpieces of visual cinema arts like "Dark City", "Edward Scissorhands", or "In Dreams". Of course, "In Dreams" is possibly an even worse film than "Tommy Boy", but I fail to see how "Tommy Boy" can be considered superior.
