Spike tv screws up DVD ads
I was flipping channels last night bitching about Madden on Monday night football and how there was nothing on and I stopped the remote on Spike tv. There was one ad finishing up 2 Fast 2 Furious and Scarface. At the end of the ad it said own it on Tuesday. Someone should tell them wrong week. I'd hate to be the idiot that screwed that one up.

I doubt that it was Spike TV who screwed up. They just air the commercials, not make them. It's like blaming a movie theatre when a movie contains a historical inaccuracy or something...
Your blame should be towards the company releasing the DVDs and who approved the ad - Universal. |

I thought the station airing the program has lists of commercials and sheets telling them which ones to run and when to air them. Granted I haven't been into a local studio in a few years but I remember seeing large banks of machines with tapes in them and people frantically changing them in and out. But I could be wrong on this one.

The station/ network certainly DOES choose the commercials to play and follows notes on when to play them, but they do not actually make the ads they show.
It's like thinking NBC makes commercials for Ford and McDonalds. Spike TV did not actually make the advertisement for Universal DVDs. Universal did (well, the advertising firm they hired did). I'm sure you've seen the same commercial on different channels, no? Maybe I'm missing something here.... |

Marq,
When it comes to commercials for stuff like DVDs or movies or CDs-stuff with a release date-the TV stations get a reel of commercials with various versions of the same commercial, each one "tagged" at the end a little differently. In the case of a DVD coming out on, say, Tuesday October 14th, there will be versions of the exact same commercial but with a graphic and announce at the end saying: "Own it on DVD Tuesday October 14th!" "Own it on DVD this Tuesday!" "Own it on DVD tomorrow!" "Get it NOW on DVD!" Likewise, a TV series premiering on Tuesday October 14th will have promos made with similar tags: "Premiering Tuesday October 14th!" "Premiering this Tuesday!" "Premiering Tomorrow!" "Premiering Tonight!" "Premering Next!" Maybe even various versions hyping the show that comes before it: "Premeiering Tuesday October 14th after American Idol" And so on and so forth. Those commercials or promos come with a sheet of information-a "log"-that tells whoever has the tape the length of the promo or commercial (if it's on TV, usually 30 seconds, but maybe 20, 15 or 10), and the dates in which it could be used. And the TV station in question is supposed to adhere to those air dates closely. So, if Em3 saw a commercial for 2 Fast 2 Furious & Scarface with a tag that says "Own it on DVD Tuesday," then one of two things probably happened: 1: Whoever is in charge of getting the right commercial on the air at Spike TV screwed up and put on the commercial with the wrong tag. This would be the fault of the Spike TV employee. 2: Whoever from Universal typed the log for the commercial typed in the wrong dates of use, and the employee from Spike TV, following the log's incorrect info, put on the wrong spot. In this case, it's Universal's fault, not Spike TV's... OK, there's also some other possibilities, like a glitch that cued the tape up to the wrong time code, or there was a problem with the correct spot and there was no time to cue up another commercial, so they just aired what looked good enough to air. Little things like that. But one of the two scenarios I described is probably what happened. In one case, it's Spike Tv's fault. In the other, it's universal's.
