Potential Academy Award Nominees for 2003....are there any?

Thinking about this today, I don't know if I have seen any films this year that I would say have been Academy Award nominee worthy. I know that there are quite a few potentially great movies that will be released in the next few months, but all-in-all, I haven't felt all that strongly about anything I've seen so far this year.

Finding Nemo and Seabiscuit are the only ones that jump to mind. And I have yet to see either of them.

Help me out here people. Name a few films released this year that may garner Oscar talk.

I would say this probably belongs in Now Playing

Thus far, I've only seen a few films I really thought were great, so I really can't make any Oscar predictions yet. However, I did enjoy "Swimming Pool" and the never-ever-going-to-get-an-Oscar "Dracula: Pages From a Virgin's Diary"

I can't say that I've seen it yet, but I'm hoping that Lord of the Rings:Return of the King gets it...

I thought about putting it there. But I figure that we could tie in DVD releases to this list. So I put it here instead.

Look for Pirates to garner a few nods, and maybe even Best Actor for Depp in the "big 5." The buzz around Nemo is that even though it would be a lock for "Best Animated" the Oscar push will be for a "Best Picture" nomination. Thirteen may be a dark horse and Capturing The Freidmans may get a nod for Documentary Feature. Confidence has a chance at Screenplay and maybe Supporting Actor. The Life Of David Gale will probably get a pretty intense push. The last chapter of Rings hasn't come out yet, but we all know that will be all over the nominations as well. And we already know that Miramax plans a huge campaign for Kill Bill part 1.

I thought Hope Davis and the cat who played Harvey Pekar were great in American Splendor. Bill Murray was excellent in Lost In Translation. Altman has The Company coming out shortly, maybe a nomination for Neve Campbell?

Of the movies I've seen and loved and thus think deserve to be awarded, I know full well that none of them will, so it's kinda hard to say for me. I've seen lots of good movies this year and think I'll see plenty more, but my barometer for excellence is often different than the popularity contest/ occasional awards for creativity that are the Oscars.
Of what I've seen, only Capturing the Friedmans might have a chance at a nomination (for Documentary). The rest of my personal top 10 doesn't stand a chance.

Of the "Oscar-favoured" type films released thus far, Seabiscuit would appear to be the type of film the Academy loves (haven't seen it).

I too have high hopes for Bill Murray in Lost in Traslation...I'll be seeing it in a couple weeks.

Of course, a majority of great films will likely come out in the last couple of months of the year, so that's when more Academy-loved/ studio-pushed movies will come along.

It's an "Oscar bait" film

1. 'serious' subject matter
2. Academy voter faves in Spacey & Winslet
3. people like to nominate director Parker for awards
4. Parker was already nominated for a Golden Bear in Berlin for this film
5. most Academy voters will have seen this
6. Oscars are rarely awarded for merit

As far as Best Picture goes, my vote is definitely for ROTK. It would be a shame for the academy to again ignore Pete Jackson's monumental efforts towards Tolkien's masterwork (that is provided that ROTK is not a total piece of shit).

There is already Oscar talk around The Last Samarai even though it hasn't even been released yet much like last year's Chicago. I could definitely see voter's passing up LOTR again for this one based on the fact that academy voter's don't consider sci-fi and fantasy to be real entertainment, at least not worthy of any real recognition anyway.

The only other movie I can think of would be Matchstick Men which is sure to garner Best Actor/Actress nods for Cage and Lohman.

Cold Mountain is getting some pre-release buzz as well.

I predict Return Of The King will get the top award, and the Academy voters will view it as a reward for the achievement of all three films. My theory is that is what was holding back the first two chapters.

Life of David Gale won't get anything. Horrible reviews and bad box office do not equal Oscar gold.

I think Johnny Depp has a great chance at picking up a Best Actor nod for Pirates, and that the film could get several nods across the board, from Picture to technical categories. I also think Return of the King will likely win Best Picture. I have this feeling that the Academy was waiting till all three were completed and are going to give the award to the last one, which will be a cumulative award for all three.

I don't think Seabiscuit will get as many nods as had been predicted. Maybe Picture, maybe Actor for Jeff Bridges, but I don't think it's going to be a big winner.

I'll be very surprised if Finding Nemo does not win Best Animated Film.

Nic Cage will get a nomination for Matchstick Men. Paul Giamatti deserves an Oscar for anything he appears in, but he certainly deserves a nomination for American Splendor.

I would really like to see Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay (or would it be Original? good question) for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, for two main reasons:

1. it was one of the very best adventure scripts to come along in a long time, and not the easiest of adaptations, either (you try turning a theme park ride into a rousing tale).

2. the screenwriters are alumni from my high school (Saddleback High, Santa Ana, CA, not sure what year they were, but I'm Class of 1984) and it'd be cool to say I went to the same school Oscar-winners did.

Early contenders IMO,

Best Actor:
Jonny Depp - PoTC
Paul Giammatti - American Splendor
Nic Cage - Matchstick Men
Bill Murray - Lost in Translation (My pick)

Best Picture:
Return of the King - sight unseen will get a nomination absolutely

BTW The Life of David Gale will not get a second look from the Academy. It was dreck.

Hey, I'm not defending David Gale... hell, I have no desire to even see it. I'm just saying, don't be surprised if Universal gives this one a push with the full-page trade ads and sends out screeners.

Murray might very well finally get a long overdue Oscar. It's the type of role and film that the Academy seems to like, I think. It'd be nice to see the movie get a nomination for Scarlett Johansen, too.

Nemo should get nominations for Score, Screenplay, and Picture...but it will probably only be nominated for "Animated Picture" and the two others. And Sound Effects Editing and Sound, I guess. The big ones that everyone cares about.

Seabiscuit will probably get some nominations. And every drama released the last two weeks of December that's from Miramax or a co-production of two studios.

I haven't seen it, but I'd be very surprised to see Universal push this one for any Oscars. The Life of David Gale was originally set to be released last Fall, but I heard Universal pushed it back to February because they realized it was not an Oscar contender. You don't do that with a Kevin Spacey/Kate Winslet film unless it doesn't look good.

Meh. It wasn't even a quarter as clever and witty and their superb work on The Mask Of Zorro. Endless jokes about a pirate's glass eye falling out constitutes a great adventure script? Look for the film to maybe get nods for costume design and sets. Johhny Depp doesn't stand a chance, either. Comic performances that aren't by Jack Nicholson never get nominated.

Isn't a bit early in the year to talk about Oscar nominations? It's not the last week of December yet.

Surprised that no-one's mentioned The Magdalene Sisters or In This World. I'm sure they'll get BAFTA noms, dunno are they really what they like to nominate for Oscars.

I hope that Peter Jackson gets his due for Lord Of The Rings, he certainly earned it, those films deserve the recognition. I would also love to see Bill Murray get an award, though I haven't seen Lost in Translation yet, I just think it would be really cool to see him get an oscar. Would I be mistaken to say he would be the only one of the SNL alumni to even get a nomination?

The new LOTR will win best picture for sure.

I really hope Lost in Translation is up for best picture and best actor (Bill Murray). But knowing the academy they will go with some other overrated drama starring meryl streep or something

I hope Kill Bill vol 1 is nominated for best picture and best director. :p *keeps fingers crossed*

Any other year I would agree with you on this. The Hot Chick was as whimsical as a satire on the philosophies of modern culture could be. However, while this would be a shoe-in over most of the nineties winners, where we were forced to acknowledge dreck such as Schindler's List or Silence of the Lambs and even the abysmal Forrest Gump, and Chicago. None of these movies had the shine that THC did. The acting talent, the forced vision of the director, these images will haunt my dreams of fancy for years to come. Much in the way that Under Siege 2: Dark Territory did. Fabulous, my favourite part being the bonding of the black restroom attendant and Rob Schneiders character in the youthful and mischevious adventure of learning to use the urinal in the club for the first time. This...IS....the magic of Hollywood.

This year however it was be the most unfortunate victim to that of Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde which will sweep the four majors.

Unfortunately, due to their lack of popularity (i.e. no big stars/ no big production value/ not from the U.S.A) these movies will be under the Academy's radar. Furthermore, Winterbottom's In This World hasn't played North America yet (I'm sure it will by the end of the year), but it sounds pretty great.

I'm also wondering why people are hoping/ assuming a film that hasn't even screened and been judged yet (the new LOTR) will win multiple awards...?

Well speaking for myself, I am going on the fact Jackson intends this to be one long film divided into three parts, much like the book was in many respects. Having adored the first two films & knowing all three were shot simultaneously, in addition to being familiar with the books, I can't see how Jackson could possibly fall flat on his face in arguably the greatest point in the story.
