ALright, now, i am fully aware that the version of this film that is out now is PACKED to the gills with extras, but will there be a two disc set anytime soon, maybe one with an audio comm? I know there was one on the criterion laserdisc, from what i understand was amazing, anyone here anything? I thought i heard a few things

I'm not sure there is any reason for a new 2-disc release considering that the current WB DVD is (as you mentioned) packed. Nor do I think there has been any demand for a new edition. So my conclusion is that there will be no new verison anytime soon.
As for the Criterion commentary, it is pretty rare for Criterion to license out their extras to other companies. I wouldn't hold your breath on that either. |

The content on the current single disc version is easily comparable to what you normally get on many two-disc sets, and probably exceeds some of them as well.

I've been wondering about this myself, as well. I would not be surprised if Warner is planning some sort of 2-Disc set for Wizard of Oz. Warner has been giving their classic library some much needed respect lately, and I'd also love to see 2-Disc versions of Gone With The Wind, and The Maltese Falcon.
Whether Wizard of Oz really needs a new release or not, classic films that get a 2-Disc release have a funny habit of selling like mad.

"The Wizard of Oz" is the only movie that I have three different video versions of...IMHO it is the greatest and best film every produced. Anyone who would like to debate this fact...I'm game.
Anyway, I have the 1999 Criterion laserdisc version (it was the first Criterion disc I ever bought, and I will have it forever), the "Ultimate Oz" laserdisc box (from 1993), and the DVD (1999). The Criterion set's only worthwhile extra feature, that isn't included on either of the other two, is the audio commentary by the late Ronald Haver. He references Aljean Harmetz's book "The Making of 'The Wizard of Oz'" extensively during his talk. By the way, if you ever get the chance to read this great book, you will not be disappointed...but I digress. From what I can tell, the DVD release has most of the supplementary material (documentary, trailers, many audio programs from original recording sessions, etc) that the the "Ultimate Oz" has except for an audio commentary by John Fricke. I haven't listened to this commentary in nearly ten years, but I recall it covering much of the same territory as Haver's. The "Ultimate Oz" is also THX approved and has some really nice inserts and artwork. The DVD has 5.1, but i'm not sure that's a bonus. There is still a more complete "Oz" DVD to be made although the one that's out there now is quite nice. The picture and the sound (I listen to the original mono track) are first rate. I will always contend that as long as the film is released in the best condition possible, I don't care if there is any supplementary material included. It's nice to have, but it's the movie that I come back to time and time again. |

Maybe OZ will turn up as one of Warner's 2-disc "At The Movies" discs?
Both commentaries would be great (can't think right now, but Criterion routinely licenses it's LD commentaries - oh, there you go, 12 Monkeys is one) and maybe a couple of cartoons and trailers for other 1939 releases - GWTW? I think a definitive release would be great - but for now I'll stick with my Ultimate Oz LD.

I wouldn't mind buying another copy.
If they could put just the movie on Disc 1 with the 2 commentaries, and multiple audio options (including original audio for those who would like it), and maybe even an isolated score, if they can... And then all the extras on Disc 2 from the previous set, and anything else they can find. P.S. As far as I know the only 2 commentaries that Criterion has ever leased out to another studio are their commentaries for Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Halloween. 12 Monkeys was actually never a Criterion. It was part of Universal's Signature Editions.

Oops, my mistake. I was thinking of the close ties between Criterion and Gilliam's films.
