Criterion does Beastie Boys?! What the %$*!
Now, erm, I can take Fishing with John - it was a superb television show, Armageddon - well, as a one off to demonstrate the blockbuster genre, Blood for Dracula and Flesh for Frankenstein - well there is some political context and satire, sure, and Carnival of Souls, it's not superbly made or written but it is very effective and a great little set (which I proudly own), and I was going to recommended Chris Morris' brilliant late night TV mutant anti-programme "Jam" (I doubt this will ever be screened in the US), but does releasing the Beastie Boys strike anyone else as a tad off?
(Deep voice): "Coming soon, from the restorers of classics such as The Third Man, Seven Samurai and The Thirty-Nine Steps...the ultimate Beastie Boys 2-disc compilation set!" Hmmm.... |

I'm surprised at this as well. I don't think its a bad idea though. I'm not a big fan of the Beastie Boys but it sounds like Criterion is doing the kind of thing that should've been done a long time ago re: music video merging with DVD technology. I can think of plenty of bands and musicians I WOULD like to see get this treatment from Criterion. I also think this should be kept seperate from their current numbering system for their films, completists may not like this. If anyone from Criterion is listening... please, do something like this with the band "Pulp"!

If you had seen the video for Sabotage you would understand. It is the greatest music video ever.I am not a huge beastie biys fan, but i do like some of there stuff. My brother paid £10 for a video tape he knew was crap (Sabotage) just to see the music video . Its so damn funny.
(It's a 70's cop show rip off) I think its directed by Spike Jone of Being John Malkovitch and Praise You fame. Its brilliant. |

Like 'em or not, Beastie Boys /are/ a major pop/rock/hiphop influence. How many groups have been considered relevant for the better part of two decades? Since more studios are starting to do their own special editions, I say good for Critereon for doing what they do best - which is finding areas not being given their full due and showing what can and should be done.
I AM a fan of the B-Boys, and I am anxiously awaiting this upcoming release. I've heard that there's a King Crimson concert disc out there that uses multiple angles to focus in on various band members, and then adjusts the music mix to highlight the member selected. I don't know if this is true or if the person who told me this was just extremely stoned and therefore thought that was happening, but it'd be rather keen if Critereon explored some underused aspects that are maybe extraneous in movie presentation and used them in new and creative ways on this title. Tho' hell, I'll just be pleased with a 5.1 mix. ![]() |
