Films you want Criterion to bring out.

What are some movies you would love to see Criterion bring out...

Some of mine are:
"The Elephant Man"
"The Big Red One" (extended cut)
"Talk Radio"
"Boogie Nights" rerelease (I was to young to enjoy or even get a laserdisc player)
"Do the Right Thing" rerelease
"Raging Bull" rerelease

I could go on and on.....

I'd really like to see them put out a DVD of Monty Python & The Holy Grail since I enjoyed their LD version so much and the current DVD of the film is so awful. I'd also love to see them redo their The Man Who Fell to Earth LD on DVD.

As you know New Line is bringing out a Boogie Nights 2-disc with some of the Criterion supplements.

A Raging Bull won't happen. Warner's isn't going to license that title.

Do the Right Thing is on the way. I believe it was announced with an August date.

I just want Criterion to bring out more Kurosawa, especially:

Ikiru
Rashomon
Throne of Blood

Ikiru and Throne of Blood are out via Tai Seng in all region versions. Check e-bay if you can't find them

Weekend by Godard needs one. That movie is hysterically funny and incisive.

Wings of Desire, Schizopolis by Soderbergh, Heavenly Creatures, City of Lost Children (although the Columbia release is stunning), Delicatssen, and if they're going to pick as dubious material as Armageddon, how about the likes of Killer Klowns from Outer Space or Freaked?

I want more Kubrick stuff (as if Warner will ever give up their rights to their shitty outdated analog transfers) and the Dogme 95 films, as well as Suspiria.

On another note, another editor (so it's definitely legit and reliable) of a major DVD website let slip on another BB that both The Killer and Hard Boiled are being re-released early next year in brand-new anamorphic transfers (yes, you read that correctly) with original language soundtracks next year. He couldn't say anything else as "negotiations are still under way".

So hold off Ebay for now!

I've seen several Tai Seng copies of "The Killer" with 5.1 sound. I don't have much faith in the 5.1 sound though. I have the Criterion version which is in the original mono and I know that all Tai Seng usually does is put the same sound in all 5 speakers, or something near that effect for all of their dvd's. Everything always sounds tinny and unnatural. I don't think these Tai Seng versions have any extras though (which is one of the best things about the Criterion version). Ebay might actually the best place to get this version, they might have it in a local Tower Records, that's where I saw it.

Disco Stu, I'm aware of the Tai Seng versions, and having experienced some of their material I'll pass. I don't need to be laughing during Rashomon because every other subtitle is misspelled.

Another good Kurosawa film would be Dreams. A beautiful film and a really good one. Some Kubrick stuff would be welcomed as well, but once again (as in Raging Bull) I would be dreaming *sigh*. To add more fuel to the fire I thought of a few more.
Touch of Evil
Apocalypse Now
Chinatown
Das Boot
Fargo
Amadeus
Manhattan
The Truman Show
M*A*S*H

Feel free to add on.

Well... I have to stick with my favorite cult film of all time - PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE. Brian DePalma's classic film begs for a DVD version complete with deleted scenes, outtakes, commentary by DePalma/Williams/Finley, and as a bonus, the new music that was composed for the Broadway version of the the movie that never got off the ground!

Can someone explain what the big deal about Criterion discs is? Do they do extensive Collectors Editions or something better than the companies? Ive seen the Armageddon and Silence of the Lambs Criterions, but why doesnt the studio itself just make them?
