Review Contest (With Prize!!)
Ok folks, here's the deal...
In my continuing hope to get a review forum on the File, I was hoping to get some people to write some reviews in the Software area. To do this, I am starting a contest. I want you all to write a review of one of your favourite or LEAST favourite DVD's, and tell us why you feel so passionately about it. It can be long, it can be short, it can be a new release, or an old release. Just write the best review you feel like writing, and I along with a small panel of DVDFile member judges will decide who gets the prize. The prize you ask? Well, nothing spectacular... just the Evil Dead Special Edition. I make $200 a week, so, bear with me... Anyway, if you're interested in either the prize, or the reviews forum, please write something up and participate. I'm looking forward to reading some reviews. |

I'm pretty sure that it's the same transfer as the Book of the Dead edition, which is the first DVD release to have a matted version of the film. And even so, a lot of people prefer the open matte version. |

It is the weekend Moogle, forum attendance always is down. I'd give everyone till Monday before you start thinking there is a total lack of interest.

Hey Moog!
Great idea, but I already have enough on my plate doing the reviews for DVD Toons and keeping the stories coming at Animated News. Besides, I've just been told that I'm doing "Barbie In Swan Lake" for my sins. (Hmmm, perhaps I will have something to write about, eh?) ![]()

Re: Review Contest
Hey Moog, can we link to our own Amazon DVD reviews to save re-typing, or at least copy them to this contest thread? If we can, then here are my reviews (there are some VHS and CD reviews here too!). Enjoy
!

You've been stuck on this idea for quite awhile now, MooglePorn, and while I admire your passion, I really don't see reason for a reviews forum here. People have always had the option of posting a review in the software forum and yet you hardly ever see it. If people were posting their reviews on a frequent basis, or even talking about such things, I could see it happening, but that doesn't seem to be the case. |

OK, entering favourite review now!
JFK: Special Edition Director's Cut JFK is a brilliant and indepth story about the day America cried. What this movie does not do is tell you what you already know about 22/11/1963, but rather the evidence New Orleans DA Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner, in a wonderful performance) stumbles across and slowly pieces together to create the greatest conspiraacy theory man has ever known, including that of the Lunar landing in 1969 never happening!?! Director Oliver Stone takes what facts are already known about the assassination, as well as informed guesses, and weaves them smootly into the story of the investigation that occurred several years after JFK died. They include the 'magic bullet' theory, Mr X and the military's involvement, and the underworld connections of the CIA. This two-DVD set also includes a very interesting commentary by Stone, where he talks about his interest in Kennedy's murder and the attention to detail in the movie. The documentaries are interesting to watch once, after you've seen the film, but are useless otherwise as they are complicated and repeat issues addressed in the film. Kevin Costner is wonderful as Jim Garrison, showing how the man cared more about a murder mystery than his family and the lives of his employees. For those relatively unfamilar with the details of JFK's death, such as myself being an Australian teen, it is easy to understand why people still want answers and why they haven't got them yet. Also, for fans of legal dramas or with a passion for the law it is very interesting to watch the trial of a businessman connected to an anti-communist, as Garrison continually brings evidence into play. An outstanding film about an unforgettable time in history, put together by the master of historical dramas, Oliver Stone. For people with an interest in JFK's assassination, or modern history, this DVD is a must-have. And my next best... The Godfather DVD Collection The Godfather Trilogy is perhaps the greatest film achievement in history. Unlike so many past classics, it does not age, and is still relevant to today's youth. The Godfather: Part I is my favourite of the collection, and is only made what it is by Marlon Brando. He is everything you expect of a Mafioso, charming and powerful, yet cold and deadly. As Don Vito Corleone, Brando makes the role his own and lifts this movie to unimaginable heights. Al Pacino as Michael the All-American war hero turned killer is also wonderful, and The Godfather is just a taste of what is to come. The Godfather: Part II portrays Michael and a younger Vito Corleone (Robert De Niro) at the same age, both trying to cement positions in the underworld. De Niro's performance in this movie is captivating, and it is the first time I have been so intensely drawn in by a character whose dialogue is in a foreign language. It is a true skill to be able to draw an audience in when they are reading your words at the same time, and I now have the utmost respect for Robert De Niro. Part II has a much deeper emotional feeling, as Michael Corleone struggles to live up to his father's impeccable reputation. A very different film to that of The Godfather: Part I, but just as high quality. I have read mixed reviews for The Godfather: Part III, many saying it was a cheap attempt at cashing in, but after watching the movie to see the Godfather's conclusion I have to disagree. In Part III, Michael has grown old, and is determined to clear the Corleone name before he dies. Battling diabetes, he looks to his son to be his successor, but after his offer is turned down, he looks to Vincent Mancini to take the ranes. Vincent, played by Andy Garcia, is a short-tempered Italian trying to make it as a gangster, but Michael tries to teach him how things work when you're in "the family". Garcia is perfectly cast, and shows both sides of Vincent wonderfully. An appropriate conclusion to the masterful trilogy, Part 3 is every bit as good as the first two films. The set is fittingly presented in a very serious looking box, and is just another little detail which adds to the mastery of The Godfather Collection. The DVD extras offer both quality and quantity, with an interesting documentary on the Corleone family, commentary by Francis Ford Coppola, and various other juicy extras. The Godfather Collection is a film-lover's dream, and is a necessary part of any DVD library. Worth every cent, this is an opportunity not to be missed, as it is not often you can get three 5-star movies in one set. Buy it today, and discover the brilliance that is The Godfather. There you have it, my two entries... ![]()

the most successful I've ever seen this concept is on www.horrordvds.com I think the reason is that a lot of those films don't get the attention from review sites, or there is a certain bias toward films of that genre. The horror fans tend to trust reviews from fellow enthusiasts far more.
With a site like this it is pretty general and broad-based. I'm not too interested in a reading yet another review of The Matrix Reloaded or Indiana Jones Trilogy. It's just the way I feel. I think if someone posts a review here, or a link to some that is cool, though. ![]()

That is why a review forum is probably a good idea...if you want to post or read reviews, go there, otherwise you can steer clear and the Software Forum isn't covered in "Have you read the IGN review for..." type thread.

Tell you what, I'll add to the bounty. I'll offer, along side with this disc, a copy of Down With Love . Why this film you ask? Well, I think the film is wonderful, and should have gotten a better write-up, both theatrically and in the home video world. Plus, I love to spread the word about this film. So write away people, heck.....I may just throw my hat in the ring here soon when I have more time. |

Hey Moog,
I thought this was supposed to be a review contest for films/discs we DIDN'T like? So far, they've been for stuff that the writers enjoyed. Not quite right there, is it? Anyway - shame you can't count this: Barbie In Swan Lake. I aksed DVD Toons for the Frank And Ollie documentary and I get...Barbie In Swan Lake. Can't tell you how crap this shit was. And Amazon are selling it with Finding Nemo as a pair for Gawdsake - talk about showing the other one up! Luck of the draw I guess. One week Finding Nemo, the next, fucking Barbie In Swan Lake. Anyway, with that off my chest, I brought about my usual professional courtesy and bitched about it in the nicest possible terms: Click here for Barbie "fun". Since this is a family movie on a family site, I held off going for broke, but can't you just feel my clenched teeth and sheer boredom coming through?

Moogle,
I rountinely write my reviews for free - haven't had a screener since The Rescuers in June! If you like, I could re-paste my Muppet Christmas Movie review or Disney's American Legends - both titles I did just for "fun" - or there's my superlong Indiana Jones post I made here.

I have Down With Love...
As with many box office bombs, it's a fantastically fun movie. Thought the same with LXG and can't wait for that either.
