Carlito's Way DVD - Worth a blind Buy?

Saw it on sale for $8.99 at CC but I cant find any reviews on it. I was meaning to rent it but I havent gotten around to that either and for $9, it seems like quite a deal.

So whats this movie like? Ive heard it was like a Scarface type of movie, but like I said, I havent read anything on it.

You ain't much of a man if you don't love Carlito's Way... (2nd greatest movie ever made).

Yeah Rav, buy it. It's definitely worth 9 bucks. If it was 20 I'd hesitate, but you can't go wrong for 9.

Great flick, you need to own it... I like it more than Scarface, myself. $9 is probably the old version though... be aware there is an SE available for $15...

Worth it for 9 bucks- but not much more- not really a sequel to 'scarface' per se, but reunites DePalma and Pacino...an average film, certaily not one of DePalma's best but far superior to anything he's done since Untouchables, his last great film...hes become as bad as John Carpenter has...sad to see 2 once great genre directors lose all grasp of technique and storyline

If youre looking for a good DePalma movie try these (with #1 being the best film)
1. Blow Out
2. Dressed to kill
3. Untouchables
4. Scarface
5. carrie
6. Obsession
7. Body Double

All of these films are far superior to "Carlito's Way"

Avoid "The Fury" at all costs however...unwatchable

Moogle, I just checked at Circuit City's website, and it's $8.99 for the brand new Collector's Edition which just came out. They also advertise the 1998 release for $19.95.

So it's a no-brainer - it's a definite buy.

Hey, The Fury kicks ass! One of the most outrageous endings ever, the always enjoyable Kirk Douglas and a terrific John Williams score. Not the best film De Palma's ever made, but stylish as hell and loads of fun. Plus, look fast for a young Daryl Hannah in her film debut!

Add my recommendation to making a purchase of Carlito's Way. It's much superior to the fun but overrated Scarface, and the SE has a very nice little 35-minute documentary, plus the excellent trailer.

And as for De Palma "losing it" in recent years, two words: Femme Fatale.

I won't pretend I'm an authority on De Palma or his movies, but based on the few of his I've seen, I think he's one of Hollywood's worst. I'll probably get some flak for this, but I think he's a hack.

I definitely recommend reading movie reviews and DVD reviews before committing to buying a movie you've never seen before. It certainly helps me gauge whether it'll match my tastes, etc.

If my opinion actually has this much sway in your DVD buying decisions, I must say that it's a great film.

I usually don't recommend blind buys, but for some reason I bought Carlito's Way blind myself, and I enjoyed it. I don't regret it, but had I rented it first, I might not have bought it. It's a good movie, though (much better than Scarface) and for $9, I'd say it's worth it. Just make sure it's the new "Collector's Edition."

Add another yes to picking up Carlitos Way I had the older version and sold it, I will probably pick up the new one this week.

As far as De Palma losing it, like Monterey Jack said check out Femme Fatale one of the best movies to come out last year.

I was so psyched to see this on sale in the CC circular. I held out for the SE a few months ago but thought it was too expensive. At $8.99, this SE is a steal!

I remember it more as HERE COME DA PAIN!!!
A pretty tired story, but great cinema, acting, and cinematography. As to recent ones, I liked Snake Eyes too, but I want to see the fucking ILM ending.

By the way, anybody know if Salo is a good blind buy?

Well I got just got back from CC with Carlito's Way!

Damn, anyone who wants this movie better hurry up and go get it! I was talking to the manager cause I couldnt find a copy and he said they had just got 13 in and they sold a whole bunch sunday. So he looked in the front and nothing, than at the DVD section, nothing. But finally he found one while searching a basket full of DVDs and found it under a bunch of Ice Age DVDs. Looks like someone may have hidden it. Anyway I got the LAST copy and sure enough, its the new CE.

Damn awsome day! I also got my $3 HULK DVD in the mail as well! Whoo hoo!

Oh, and those are some great quotes! I cant wait to see the movie!

Dude, ILM created a gigantic hurricane flood that wiped everybody inside out. Supposedly, it was too unbelieveable for test audiences so they reshot it. I wanna see that shit, but DePalma is kind of reserved on his DVD "Special Editions".(deleted scenes and whatnot)

Plus Snake Eyes bombed.

my main beef with the fury was that the son was a non-character before being kidnapped, so you didn't really care have a vested interest in whether Douglas found him or not, and the actor who played him was laughably bad. The film possessed none of the stylistic flourishes or nifty camera tricks that DePalma is (in?)famous for, and the humerous touches in the film were distractingly out of place.

haven't seen "femme fatale", but heard it was a return to form- anyone who loved "blow out", "dressed to kill" et al but hates DePalma's newer crap pleasantly surprised by "femme fatale?" is it worth a rental? Rebecca Stamos is easy on the eyes but a wooden actor at best- how does she hold up such DePalma's fav leading lady, the MIA Nancy Allen?
Apologies for straying even further off the thread's subject

God's Holy Trousers, now that you say it, I kinda remember having read about it.
If the Snake Eyes cult that emerged out of the ashes of its theatrical release doesn't calls for Snake Eyes Redux, I don't know what is.
Oh wait, maybe this: Breathtaking rehearsal footage from the flood scene!

What about that spectacularly staged, Rube Goldbergian slo-mo escape from the institute? Classic De Palma. True, there isn't any split-screen action and only a few split-diopter shots, but I think the film just oozes with style.

Quote:

Remember, DePalma got his start with scruffy, countercultre comedies like Greetings and Hi, Mom! in the late 60's before getting typecast as the Hitchcock imitator. Humor has always been one of his underrated strong suits. I find the comedic moments in The Fury to add a human touch to an otherwise bleak and apocalyptic story.

I just upgraded my old Carlito's way with the $8.99 deal at Circuit, well worth it!

(If anyone is looking for it at Circuit Union Square NYC... I think I got the last one... people were chasing me down demanding to know where I found it and even demanding that they were looking first, so they should get it)

Ok, so I saw in the weekly ad that it was $8.99 and I figured now was a good time to upgrade my old edition. So I paid for Nemo so I could get the mousepad right away then I went looking for Carlito's Way. I saw there were none where they were supposed to be, so I started looking behind other titles... nothing. Others were looking too (at this point, i didn't know what they were looking for). I asked a sales associate if there were anymore, however they couldn't find it in the computer because it was a new system and it was down... so the sales associate started looking too. I saw someone holding along with like 20 other dvds, so my search was still a go.

About 20 minutes later... (yeah I was still browsing games and such, I didn't want to leave the liunes were so long and I wanted to by something)... I spot the person who had the disc on line but with only three movies (Carlito not one of them). I went back to check everywhere again, hopefully this person put it somewhere wierd and I would find it. I DID!!! I then let the sales associate that I found one, she asked "WHERE?" I said behind something else.... Others saw me holding it, many asked and ran to the spot asking... "Here? In this Isle? Sure?" I tried to explain this was probably the last one... The search was desperate because Circuit stopped its raincheck policy.

So I get on the line and another customer tells me that I should hand it over to him... he explained he had "been lookin' longer" I laughed a bit, but I soon realized he was serious as he tried to take it from my hand. I quickly turned... HE FOLLOWED ME TO THE NEXT LINE!!! At this point, when I wouldn't turn to face him, the crazy went away and he went back deeper into the store....

Sorry if I rambled... but it was quite a crazy situation.

Thats some crazy shit man. If someone would have pulled that with me, I would have raised some hell.

I havent seen the movie yet, but I will soon! I loved Scarface and if this is suppose to be better than Scarface, I know I'll love it.

I also wanted to point out the guy at CC was helping me out and we were bullshitting the whole time. He was a manager, but I never asked to see one, he just happened to be in the DVD section when I asked for CW. He was really nice and cool, Ive dealt with him before. Theres a few great people at my CC and thats why they get my money 110% more times than Best Buy will.
