james bond criterions
Hello all, i had a question, there were some james bond films on criterion laserdisc, Dr. NO, goldfinger, and i THINK another one(does anyone know?) anyway, all of these had audio comm, but i THINK were removed and the LD's were reissued without them, does anyone know why? Now, the mgm DVD versions have audio comm on them, were these the ones that were removed from criterion? Were they newly recorded? Please help me out?

Rarely does Criterion license their commentaries or supplements to other studios. It has happened, but it's rare.
I'm sure the reissue of the LDs had to do with licensing, and while I don't have the new MGM Bond films, it's doubtful that the commentaries are the Criterions. Feel free to correct me if you have the disk, I'm just talking out my ass here -- but if you do a search on "Criterion AND commentary" I'm sure you'll find some interesting reading.

The Criterion LDs were of the first three Bond films: Dr. No, From Russia With Love, and Goldfinger. The commentary was removed because (if i remember correctly) because audio interviews from Albert R. Broccoli were used without permission.

I thought they were removed because MGM wasn't too thrilled with some negative comments that were made by some of the participants.
My friend Tom is a Bond expert (some of his photos have been used in one of Lee Pfiefer's Bond books), but he's not in his office right now to ask. I'll get back to you after I talk to him about it. |

This is how i remember it too....at the time if memory serves they offered the commentaries stand alone (i dont remember what format) I really wish I had picked them up. Well I really regret not buting them straight out with the commentaries but I think they were $75 a pop and I foolishly passed. |

Well, I just talked with my friend, and to the best of his knowledge, the commentaries were yanked due to some not so flattering comments made about the producers by some of the commentary participants. It's been years since he's heard the commentaries (he doesn't own a copy of the discs) so he can't recall any exact quotes that may have lead to this.

Unfortunatly i started buying the Bond LDs to late. And while the box sets were still in there little Criterian catlog books all that I could get was the CLV 1 disc movie and trailer Criterian version which at the time was supposedly better then MGMS transfer I think. So its next to my West Side Story Box Criterian, Ghostbusters, The Graduate, Its a Wonderful Life and a bunch of other Criterian discs that had really great commentarys that most people wont ever hear.

I think it's odd that Criterion don't license out their coms.
Hellllooooo? Be nice to the studios that licensed their films to you in the first place!! They should do a swap deal, where they make some supplemental material available to the studio in return for a title to put out. I'd have loved to hear a com on West Side Story.

I thought on the WSS box set that Robert Wise spoke between songs, like he did on The Sound Of Music?

In regards to the commentary, I think it is a little odd that Criterion has, for the most part, not carried the commentaries from laser to dvd, although they have done it on movies like Spinal Tap, Silence Of The Lambs, and a few others. I think one of the problems they may have is getting dvd rights to liscence to others is because they would more than likely have to go back to all the participants who agreed to do the laserdisc commentaries and secure rights yet again, which would probablt mean paying another hefty price. It's a shame because the English Patient commentary is very good, as well as all of Terry Gilliam's (Baron Munchausen, and The Fisher King). |
