Are these bootlegs or legit dvds?

Here is an item I am thinking of bidding on. The dvds are sold without cases just the discs and artwork.

i'd bet my left nut that this (and the Bad Boys 2 DVD) are bootlegs just by this line...

"This DVD is Brand new, but the picture quality of this DVD is not very good and there are no special features."

if i were you, i'd pass.

Hmmm . . . and the X2 DVDs don't come with cases (to reduce shipping )?

Something smells real fishy. Walk away man . . . just walk away.

Peace

X2 comes out next week! Can't you wait until then? You're putting yourself through unneeded pain. Both of these DVD's are likely to be about $15 apiece when released. That extra $6 will cover the shipping costs of the bootlegs. So shipping costs coupled with current bid price ($23.50, I think) comes close to about $30 for the bootlegs after all is said and done. Not worth it for an inferior presentation. Wait for the official releases.

You are looking at X2 X-men united on DVD. This is the one disc wide screen version.
What one disc widescreen version? I thought it's only coming out in a 2 disc version.

It's gotta be a bootleg.

Pay good money for a disc with no cover and another one that doesn't have great picture quality?

Yeah, um...I can see the point in that.

X2 is available in both 1 & 2 disc versions (at least it is in the UK.) I definitely think this is a bootleg though, no case to reduce shipping charges?!

I would never trust anyone selling DVDs on eBay. The bootleggers (mostly Chinese or Southeast Asian, I've noticed) are making money hand over fist from suckers willing to part with their money through eBay.

Me too, but I always say they are legit R1 releases, and have an actual photo of the 'goods' to make it 100% clear that it's the right thing.

Plus -- shipping a DVD media mail with the keepcase costs the same as shipping the DVD without it. Keepcases are like 3 oz. Man, do these guys count on the suck factor of some people or what?

The movies this guy is selling (X2, Bad Boys 2, Hulk, Italian Job, etc.) all happen to be movies that were popular on bittorrent DVD piracy sites weeks before official release. I wouldn't be surprised if this guy is downloading DVD-R's, burning them to disc, and printing out the covers. Definitely not worth $8.

That's pretty harsh. I've purchased over 40 DVDs on ebay and only had an issue with one guy which I'm working out now. It was a bootleg copy of Musa that has been sent BACK to him with the warning that I want my money back, INCLUDING shipping and that he remove this title from his listing because if I check his auctions again and it's still there, I'll report him.

He claimed he didn't know they were boots and he's sold tons with very few complaints so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt this time. I bought from him before and got original DVDs so I'll give him a chance to fix this. It DID come sealed, but anyone can do that these days.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with the DVD pictured below?

He's been really cool about getting this resolved and as I said, it was the first time I have ever had this happen. I found a LOT of impossible to find DVDs on Ebay that local people wanted $80 and up for. I'm sorry, if you want to pay that kind of coin for a DVD, be my guest. Make mine Ebay. I am SO glad I didn't spend that much on the Prince of Darkness, especially now that it was rereleased for $10.

Asian DVDs...

What usually happens in Asia is they will get copies of US DVDs and clone them, making exceptionally good discs. They will sell them as copied originals, and usually they will give you an offer of "buy 4, get one free" and the freebie will be a bootleg of a brand-new theatrical release of only middling quality.

It seems that the X-Men 2 being offered is a clone of the 1-disc edition and they are offering the Bad Boys 2 bootleg they got with it as an incentive.

$23.50 for a pirate copy???

Some people are so gullible, it's unbelievable.

I could have got you a legit Region 3 special tin box 2-disc edition of X-Men 2 for only US$20.

A pity I don't sell on Ebay.

There are two responses you can apparently get from eBay bootleggers if you catch them.

The innocent response...
"I didn't know it was a bootleg."
It's astounding how many bootleggers there must be on eBay who don't know they're selling illegally copied DVDs.

The denial response...
"Its not a bootleg."
This is most common response from what I can tell. I pointed out once that my bootleg wasn't shrinkwrapped or taped shut and got the response "Customs removes that due to increased security after 9/11". No matter how many different ways you prove its a bootleg this person will never admit it.

Fortunately both people 90% of the time seem to give refunds if you return the DVD that "you aren't satisfied with". This is because most people don't pursue the matter after the refund and they can always resell the DVD to someone less savvy and still make a profit.

Someone should make a website listing all the known/proven DVD bootleggers on eBay.

Customs is true

Actually customs HAS been opening things up a lot more since 9/11 - I've had that happen to me, as well. So that isn't necessarily a bogus excuse.

However, I've been taken by a LOT of bootleggers on eBay, to the point where I'm going to start selling legitemate stuff there to try and counteract it. I want people to see the stuff the way it's supposed to be seen. Not a DVD-5 VCD-like knockoff of a DVD-9 original...which may or may not play on your player. I've got friends who can get the stuff cheap for me (cheap by US standards, not by Chinese) so I figured, why not? But I'm finding out about the customs tricks now.

In China, the most popular method of selling bootlegs is as the auction described...the disc jacket is copied and the disc/sleeve is put in a resealable mylar sleeve. This makes it easy to set up anywhere to sell, and vanish in a hurry.

i recently bought a copy of Ichi the Killer (uncut 3 disc - incl. the animation episode 0). it appears to be a bootleg, but hey, it's uncut, dual layer, its not available in my country (australia. and we might never end up getting it...), it's subs seem as good as the UK cut version I rented from the "arty" video store, fuckit, i'm gonna cut my losses, ya know?

The terrorists didn't threaten the passengers and crew with DVDs! "Watch it! He pulled 'Gigli' on us!"

DVDs didn't fly into any buildings!

Good God, only the dumbest people alive believe that one.
