This is Spinal Tap Criterion!

Is there a bootleg out there as well? How can I tell if I am bidding on a legit version?

There are boots floating around on eBay for many of the high priced OOP Criterion titles, and Spinal Tap is one of them.

There's no sure fire way to assume you're getting a legit copy, but you can always rule out many of the red flags:

1. Try to buy from a seller from the US/Canada for the R1 title.
2. If a seller claims the DVD is Region 0, playable in all regions, stay away.
3. If the cover art has anything Chinese on it, it's fake. (Then again, any seller can rip off a cover image and claim it's their own. But I've seen hard Boiled Criterion DVDs on eBay that actually had kanji on the cover. Bizarre)
4. Pay with PayPal or a credit card so you have some sort of way to at least minimize the damage if its a fraud.
5. Don't pay with a Western Union money transfer. If the seller only takes a wire transfer, pass.
6. Check out the seller's feedback, and see if there's a nice collection of positive feedbacks on items where he was the SELLER for various products, to different buyers.

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head....good luck!

Nope, Spinal Tap (as pretty much all of the early Criterions) really is an R0 DVD.

But I would still buy from Europe or the US/Canada in order to avoid bootlegs.

Bob X is correct, most of the early Criterions were Region 0 so that doesn't make a difference. But here is an interesting note about The Spinal Tap Criterion (which I own and bought from a Tower Records when it first came out), I think it is the only TWO SIDED Criterion DVD. There is no disc art and Side one is the feature with two commentary tracks and side two is the special features side, there is NO artwork on the disc. So ask to see the pic and ask for a scan of the insert.... most of these bogus Criterions on Ebay are devoid of inserts.

Awesome, there is a dual sided one on there.

I got to track down The Killer, Hard Boiled, and This is Spinal Tap. I know somebody who failed to sell Salo before, but he's relisting it in December.

I have to admit that I am fairly dissapointed by this thread. When I saw the title, I thought there was a rumor going around about a TAP re-release. I was sad to learn that there was not.

Damn! Same here. Would have been nice maybe if a " ? " was used in the title instead of a " ! ".

Anyway your gut instinct is usually your best bet in deciding if a Criterion or any dvd on ebay is legit. Another thing to check is the seller's feedback (if they've sold 20 Dead Ringers cc's lately I'd be suspicious)

Other times the boot's stick out like a sore thumb. Check this one out for laughs....

Am I correct that the MGM logo on the bottom of that Salo is also problematic?

Oops, sorry.

That list was a general rule of thumb to follow for DVDs. I wasn't aware that the Criterion Spinal Tap was actually R0, sorry.
