quick question?
Does anyone know whether the A&E Sci/Fi channels sell copies of the movies that they show? I am eager to see if I can get my hands on a copy of the Horatio Hornblower movie that'll air on A&E in december and the Battlestar Galactica one on Sci-Fi. Do we have to wait for the TV movies to hit DVD, or can I even get them at all? I am more jazzed about TV movies this season than the theater ones... with the exception of Return of the King. Anyway, hope someone can help me out. Thanks

Horatio Hornblower has been out for a while now, but I'm not sure if the new movie coming out in December is one of them.
http://store.aetv.com/html/home/index.jhtml Not sure about Galactica, I can't seem to find an online store for them. |

I don't know if Galacticia has aired on Sci-Fi (I don't watch the Sci-Fi channel anymore they are dead to me) yet. Give it a month or 2 and then you should hear something about a release. They did it with Dune, Children of Dune and Taken so there is no reason not to expect it to show up.

Horatio Hornerblower's 3rd telefilm will hit DVD on 12/11/03...I'm looking forward to it immensely! Amazing how both these properties air in December, and this one's DVD hits pretty much immediately!
Universal (and hence NBC now, under the newly merged company NBC-Universal) owns the rights to the new Battlestar Galactica mini-series. I am a huge fan of the original version. I am a huge fan of Ronald D. Moore, who is the guy who brought us some of the best episodes (and the best feature film) of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Having said that, the new mini-series is an abomination that Moore acknowledges as having little to do with the original series. He was quoted as saying (I'll have to paraphrase it here) that he disagrees with the orginal version of the show, but thought that the popularity of the property made it a useful vehicle to tell the story he was writing. Which is essentially a re-write of all things Borg, from everything I can see. The Vipers are the only thing that resembles the original...everything else is changed completely! So, although much to my dismay the new mini-series will probably be on DVD before Spring 2004 is over, I would personally hope that this travesty fails miserably on airings and never sees the light of a DVD street date. Original (or semi-original) SF stories are always welcome to me, but I never have any use for someone who becomes a typical Hollywood type that prefers to take a beloved fan universe and totally bastardize it for his own ends instead of properly starting from scratch. It would have been much better for Moore to tell his own story using his own universe, and allow Richard Hatch to continue in his efforts to revive the original concept in picking up where things left off, but yahrens down the road. There, I've gotten THAT off my chest! |

In the spirit of Unicorn getting that off of his chest...

And the cylons now look just like humans!! From what I've read on the 'net, this series seems to be nothing more than lots of space dogfights and some fucking throw-in to be "racy". Whatever... I think I'll pass.

I'm actually eagerly awaiting the upcoming Battlestar Galactica mini-series. The Sci-Fi channel will be airing a 1 hour behind-the-scenes preview of the series starting this week, called Battlestar Galactica: The Lowdown. This preview will begin airing on Wednesday, 11/26, at 10PM and Thursday 11/27 2AM.
It will air a few more times, between then and December 7, which is when the mini-series starts. I don't know if this is a short mini-series (4 hrs) or long mini-series (10+ hours). I've been a fan of the story for a long time, and really enjoyed the original movie and 1st few movie/episodes, but the concept and later episodes just got stale pretty quickly. I'm actually hoping for a promising re-make, as I really enjoyed the Frank Herbert's Dune mini-series vastly over the David Lynch film, and enjoyed the Children of Dune mini-series. I'll be watching it when it airs.

Thanks a million
Yes, I do believe that I have read that there are some differences with the Battlestar Galactica series, but I will still give it a go. The hornblower should be the A&E series you reffered to. There are a number of films, each very good independantly, some have already been released. This one is released on the 2 and 3, so you are correct. The fact that I only have to wait a few days is really great. Hmm, those could possibly be christmas gifts... Anyhow, thank you.

Yes, it seems a lot of the "big event" telefilms shown on American cable channels inevitably find their way on DVD. If I were a betting man, I'd say the Battlestar Galactica mini-series will likely hit DVD within the year.
The BG "reimagining" airs on Space in January, so I'll hold off judgment until then. No offense to BG fans, but I always found the original series hopelessly mediocre (it aired on Space a couple of years ago and I managed to catch most of the 20-odd episodes), so I hope the new mini-series is a step up (strange how everything retro is new again)--anything to erase painful images of Lorne Green's wooden acting! Yeah, I'm a snob and I've pissed off my buddy Phil (a HUGE sci-fi/fantasy guy) with my opinion (Why are genre fans so defensive?), but I watch Enterprise (and actually enjoy it), so what the hell do I know? ![]()

Well I watched the preview they had on the complete series DVD set and well ... it ain't gonna be no Dune.
The videogame preview looked better IMHO, even Olmos has been quoted as saying if you liked the original "Don't Watch" you'll be disappointed. I'm all for a remake but with what happened to this compared to what it could have been (and almost was) is a shame.

The Galactica is different. The Cylons are different (look human, has "religion", was created by humans). The "traitor", Baltar, is different (is a computer scientist). Starbuck and Boomer are chicks. Starbuck dated Zack. Zack's death is different. Apollo is different. Adama is different. The government they work for is different. The colonies are different. What in the world is this even called "Battlestar Galactica" for? Everything's different, so what makes it "Galactica", exactly? Oh...the fact that they want people to tune in. Means that they aren't confident in their material to give it their own, original names and let their own story stand on its own. It doesn't bode well for that story being good. I haven't heard anything that makes it sound good to me. This sounds increasingly like a bad, bad story that must rip off the fans of a well-remembered classic in order to trick people into giving it a viewing. Not me, Jack. I'm staying far away from this sucker. I've tried to give it a chance, but everything I've found out about this has made me madder and madder. I'm fed up and I'm not gonna watch it. |

Well, I've checked out Sci-Fi Channel's website on Battlestar Galactica, and I browsed through some of the characters info and through some interviews with one of the executive producers.
It is only a 2-part mini-series, 4 hours total, so no 20-hour marathon like Taken. The 1st part airs on December 8, 9PM eastern/8PM central. Not sure when the 2nd part will air.
