What's your favorite Whitney Houston DVD ever?

Movie dvds:

-The Bodyguard
-Waiting to Exhale
-The Preacher's Wife
-Cinderella

Music dvds:

-Greatest Hits
-Live In Concert
-Try it on my own/One of those days (dvd single)
-Fine/If I Told You That (dvd single)

I know, it's very hard to pick as they are all incredible, but try your hardest.

And do you guys think Whitney & Kevin should do The Bodyguard 2? After all, the movie grossed over 410 million worldwide and the soundtrack sold 37 million copies. We DESERVE a sequel! And I hope they release a special edition dvd for that movie.

I own thousands of DVDs. Funny thing is, the only one I have with Whitney is the Greatest Hits one (she's got the power drill on the cover).

Not interested in the rest, I guess.

All you did in that thread was praise "Mandy Moore" who is not even worth 1% of Whitney's talent. So I don't understand...

Don't get me wrong, Mandy Moore is CUTE. But that's all.

Whitney is a living legend and one of the most successful superstars ever. She has sold over 175 million records all over the world, her 3 movies have grossed over 550 million dollars, she has won about a zillion awards, she's respected by her peers, and she's considered one of the greatest singers of all-time. Even in movies, she's co-starred with people like Kevin Costner and Denzel Washington at their peaks, something that little Mandy can only dream of. So I don't know what the Dear God is about.

Woohoo, who would have ever though stardom directly correlates with talent?? Let's put this in mathematical form!

sin(talent) + tan(Whitney Houston) x (1.75x10^8) + (3/5.5x10^8) + (shitty actors(Denzel+Costner)) = talent^2 x zillion(awards)

Mandy gets loads of credit for actually covering XTC; Whitney Houston can only DREAM of getting such credit.

Oh please, Whitney HIRED Mandy for The Princess Diaries produced through Whitney's company Brownhouse productions, and Mandy couldn't sleep for weeks just because of the excitement that she MET Whitney. Stop with your nonsense, you look like a fool to even compare a legend to a mini-star who wouldn't even be recognized in 99% of countries.

And you're talking about CREDIT? Whenever Whitney shows up ANYWHERE, she gets a standing ovation out of respect. When Mandy shows up, they just talk about her dress or butt.

And here's an mathematical equation for you:

Whitney + Mandy = Whitney

Don't get me wrong, in the realm of music in general, Mandy sucks. But at the same time, Whitney Houston sucks even more.

And once again, people with major stardom can mesmerize people with less of it, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the less popular one is less talented. Stardom is only predicated on how ignorant or intelligent the majority population of said country/countries are. Looks like, at the time of Whitney, the majority was pretty damn stupid.
Again, to further push my point, I'll use a mathematical inequality now:

Artist + covers(XTC) > artist + acts(Costner+Washington)

Quote:
Whitney + Mandy = Whitney
Are you stupid? a + b NEVER equals a, unless Mandy = 0, which we know is not true, since she has some credit as a musician. And you said she was cute, therefore she has some value, even to you.
a + b could necessarily equal c, but one of the terms could be have enough so the equation can equal d, or e, or f.
So, for a better equation, try this:

Whitney + Mandy = Satan
That's mathematically correct.

Fine, forget the awards and sales since Whitney outclasses Mandy, and let's talk about talent. How can the woman who is considered by most people as being the greatest singer of all-time not have talent. Isn't this talent? Get a life. Mandy Moore is not considered as one of the most talented ANYTHING.

Whoa, whoa. Hold up a bit here. MOST people consider Whitney the greatest singer of all-time? I sincerely doubt (actually, I KNOW it won't) that if someone polled the US population on who they think the greatest singer of all-time is, it won't be Whitney Houston. Maybe they thought that in 1992, but now of days, I'm pretty sure Whitney Houston is nothing but a ghost of the past when it comes to popularity.

Whitney Houston DVD * 8 + Mandy Moore DVD * 4 = A staggeringly low 50% better than "Star Wars".

Star Wars movies are for kids. Mandy Moore is for little teenagers. Whitney Houston is for adults. So it's irrelevant to compare the 3.

Just because Whitney isn't very popular right now doesn't mean that she's not considered one of the greatest singers ever. Maybe Justin Timbrelake would win a poll over Michael Jackson right now because he's more popular now, but believe me, Michael Jackson is considered as one of the all-time greats no matter what happens and Justin isn't.

So why did I say you're a 10 year old? Because you keep replying with irrelevant things like Mandy covered XTC which doesn't even make sense as an argument unless you think XTC are actually The Beatles and John Lennon cameback from the dead to say that Mandy outclassed him on his song. Mandy Moore covering XTC, what the fuck?? Wow Go Mandy, you are the best! And Joe Shmo covered Elton John, WOW you're the best Joe!

If you can't acknowledge that Whitney is one of the all-time greatest and most talented singers of all-time, then you're either 10 years old and only familiar with Mandy and Spice Girls, or you simply live on another planet.

I don't acknowledge Whitney or Jackson as all-time greats, nor am I 10 (and I'm familiar with much more than Mandy Moore and Spice Girls --- if you need proof, just go look at the music collection in my profile). Maybe I do live on another planet --- a planet where Sonic Youth's 'Teenage Riot' is one of the best songs in the past 20 years, not 'I Will Always Love You', and Miho Hatori's (of Cibo Matto) voice is 500000 times better than Whitney Houston's.

And I'm not saying that just because Mandy's covered XTC that she's like amazing. It's just a few brownie points --- and those brownie points allow her to step out away from being at the level of Whitney Houston.

Ok, I just realized that you simply like to have fun by annoying people. I hope it's the case for your own sake because if you actually believe what you're writing, then you need to go see a psychologist (unless you're under 15). Here, I'll send you a tape of me singing an XTC song, wow I'm all of a sudden credible! Anyone can cover anybody.

And isn't songwriting skill a key feature of how talented you are as an artist? Last I remember, Whitney Houston doesn't write any of her songs -- especially the ones that did so well. Doing some research on allmusic, 'I Will Always Love You' was composed by DOLLY PARTON, and a lot of her songs were composed by Babyface. So, where's her talent? She can sing, so what? If she can't write songs, especially songs that reach #1, how can she be considered one of the greatest artists of all time?

Most people consider Whitney Houston the greatest signer of all-time? Wow.
Clearly I have yet to encounter most people in my lifetime. Whitney Houston has a powerful voice and can hit some high-notes. I personally have never found value in her lyrics or musical arrangements, thus to me her powerful voice amounts to nothing...agin, to me. It's just an opinion - which I guess means I'm not most people.
It's fine to be a fan of a certain musician (hell, on a related note, I've got Bobby Brown's great remix album "Dance! Ya Know It!" coming in the mail soon!), and one will obviously get defensive when a favourite of theirs doesn't meet the tastes of someone else, but when you start throwing out the impossible to qualify hyperbole like "greatest singer of all-time" combined with the classic "if you don't agree/ share my tastes with me it must mean you're from another planet/ are 10 years old/ are drunk" reasoning things get a bit messy.

Whitney is one of the most talented SINGERS of all-time. She took the Star Spangled Banner and outclassed any version out there. She took Dolly Parton's song and did it 100 times better.

If you want to talk about the most talented WRITERS or COMPOSERS, then no Whitney isn't one of them. But she's one the most talented SINGERS of all-time and she's one of the greatest & most successful ARTISTS of all-time (which includes singers or writers or composers or any other art form). It's not too tough to comprehend.

If she's one of the greatest singers (and just singing, nothing else) of all time, then she's nothing special. Like Marq said, she can hit a few high notes --- who cares? In music, singing is only just a little piece of the pie. If music is a piece of art, then singing is only the presentation of the art. It's the frame and the matting, maybe. The real artist, of course, is the one who has composed it. If Whitney Houston does none of this real composing, she isn't very talented as an artist. She just might be good at framing.

OK... let's take a breather, shall we? DVDLover, you are never going to convince the Whiteny-haters to agree with you, just as they will never talk you into their way of thinking. So why go round and round about this? Everyone is only going to be spinning their wheels until frustration sets in and the thread gets closed. Let's agree to disagree about Whitney and her talent or lack thereof and move forward. As a matter of fact, why don't you stick to the original subject of your thread and answer your own question? What is your favorite Whitney DVD and why?

Like I said, she takes any song written by anyone and brings people to tears and amazes them. Even the writers & composers themselves are in awe of her interpretation. Her voice isn't just notes, it's emotion, SOUL, interpretation skill. Have you seen her live performances between 1985-1995? She's had about 10 million standing ovations, THAT's talent.

That's not talent.
That's public relations. She might just have a good enough voice to hide the fact that she's only the gloss over the real composition, which is (not surprisingly) weak.

Not wishing to jump on any sides, but I thought the general feeling was that she had become some kind of joke?

Anyway, the topic was "What's your favorite Whitney Houston DVD ever?" - something I did feel probably didn't warrant an "ever" on the end (not like we can pick the 1960s archive classics now, is it?) - however, I will try and answer in the proper manner.

While I don't own any Whitneys, I did kind of enjoy The Bodyguard as a piece of Hollywood nonesense, and have a Mariah carey DVD whoch features the When You Believe song from The Prince Of Egypt on it.

More of a Mariah fan myself.

Whitney can sing the phone book and get a standing ovation. Get a clue.

You're backing me up even more. Again, she's just glaze on the cake, and though the cake might totally suck and not be worth a shit, but she can make it taste good for some crowd of people who can't properly look at the cake to realize that isn't more than a poorly baked cake.

More of a Mariah fan myself.
I used to like Mariah but I don't like how she started taking off her clothes and acting like a slut, so I stopped being a fan. Also she started whispering instead of singing. But at her peak 1990-1995, Mariah was up there as one of the best singers. She has some great songs. As for her movie career, let's not go there...

As for Whitney becoming a joke, it's mainly concerning her marriage to bobby brown and the drugs, but in terms of music she's still respected. I guess you can say that about Michael Jackson too (although he's a much bigger "joke"). But that doesn't diminish their place in history and their huge talent.

Again, I must mention, hyperbole isn't going to convince anyone.

As larphillips said, it's clear this argument will just keep circling itself. You'll never magically realize, "by god - she IS a tenlentless singer who lets others do the work while she screams the high notes!" and orf will never conclude "Damn! She IS the greatest of all-time and must I buy all things Whitney right NOW and accept her perfection!"

Marq, if someone doesn't like the type of artists like Whitney or hates her as a person, then fine. But to not admit that she's considered as one of the greatest singers ever is simply denying the truth. When people in 25 years will look back on who are the greatest singers ever, Whitney will be high on the list. That's a fact. Sure someone can say I don't like her music or her voice, but that doesn't mean that you can't acknowledge that she IS respected and considered as one of the best singers.

And for someone who worships Mandy Moore to judge Whitney's talent, that's even more ridiculous. Nobody who knows ANYTHING about music would consider Mandy Moore as a superior singer then Whitney Houston.

I don't like the Beatles and I think they suck, but that doesn't mean that I don't acknowledge that they are considered as one of the best bands ever. It's two different things.

Woohoo, aren't you full of hyperbole, as Marq has reflected on?
I told you that I think Mandy sucks, but really, compared to Whitney, she's kind of a delightful listen.
But, to lighten up the conversation, Mandy and Whitney both suck to the wonderful novelty that this group releases....

Wow, what an entertaining derailed mess this thread is. You guys are hilarious.

My opinion on Whitney Houston is that she's a very good singer, though I despise her style of over-the-top "look at me while I hold this note or pepper this song with 1,000 other scale notes so there isn't any of that non-vocals-dominated stuff, aka music, left to clutter up my song." It's a problems that's plagued R&B singers for the past 2.5 decades in my opinion. It's also hard to respect her professional life when her personal life is such an unclassy joke. Drugs and spouse abuse don't exactly scream out for accolades, though I guess it didn't hurt Sinatra or Scott Weiland...

I'm totally cool with anybody not agreeing with my opinion. And for the record, I'm 32.

I respect your opinion and you have the right to not like her style. HOWEVER, wouldn't you agree that she's considered as one of the best singers ever? I doubt you would deny it. It's two irrelevant things, you can hate Whitney's style, but you can't say that "no she's not considered as one of the best singers ever and one of the most successful artists". That's my problem with Orf. He has the right to say that he doesn't like her style of singing, but you can't deny her place in history. I can say I hate Pavarotti's voice, but I won't deny that he's considered one of the best opera singers ever.

*sigh* We tried Marq. Cheers. Methinks DVDlover is stuck in 'Rain Man' mode.

While I'm not a particular fan of Houston's music, I think she has a good voice and she has talent and I can see why so many people like her.

And I'm not sure about a sequel to The Bodyguard, I haven't seen it in a long time but I just don't see it working out.
