Apes Box Set

I just read the review over at DVDReview and I must say that I'm extremely disappointed that Fox didn't delay the release to include anamorphic transfers.

This is especially puzzling in the wake of Fox's newfound commitment to anamorphic, high quality releases. I know it would have been a rather long delay since it is five movies and all, but the original is one of the best sci-fi movies of all time and by itself deserves Fox's "Five Star" treatment, right?

I will not buy the set. If Fox revisits the original at least, and maybe the first sequel, and does the anamorphic thing then I'll be first in line waving my dough. Til then...

Actually, HD transfers have existed for some time now of all the films, there was no reason they could not have given us anamorphic transfers and gotten it out at the same time as this current set other than selling us a 'new improved' set after the new movie comes out.

I sure hope Fox doesn't catch "Princess Bride" Syndrome...

If, by "Princess Bride Syndrome," you mean "release a bare bones, non-anamorphic DVD now, and an anamorphic special edition in a year," I don't think that applies here. The Apes box set is supposed to be a special edition. The Princess Bride disc is not. Besides, Fox has never had any kind of good track record in the anamorphic department anyway.

I would trade the sixth extras disc for an anamorphic transfer of the first film alone. To me, picture quality is numero uno in the requirements dept. for any particular disc ( outside of the title, of course! ).

Since anamorphic transfers WERE feasible for release
at the same time it is completely inexcuseable that we get non-anamorphic. If Fox has REALLY turned over a new leaf let's see a delay in release to provide utmost quality! I hope you are reading this, Peter Staddon!

I absolutely agree, IG88. It's just that my expectations (and my hopes) aren't too high where Fox is concerned any more. For every great new disc they release, there are two or three others that suck (and let's not forget that Fox is still pricing all of their "new" releases at $34.95). Once burned, twice shy, I guess.

Although they've claimed that Apes will be their last non-anamorphic release. We shall see.

My theor is Fox has had the boxset ready for a while now. They probably made the transfer choice when they were not doing anamorphic at all, like Paramount's Titanic. Maybe the reason it took so long to get the set out is because of the 6th disc or waiting for more players to be sold, just a theory.
