ReEditing Films for DVD. Good or Bad?
"I just received some more info on the upcoming DVD of 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture', for which a Special Edition version is currently being created at Paramount. The DVD version appears to be even more ambitious than reported before, as I'm told director Robert Wise is completely re-editing the movie so that it reflects his vision for it.
'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' is apparently the only movie Wise directed that he did not also edit, so this is a big deal for him, and Wise's participation is basically the reason why Paramount is paying for this to happen. The person who informed me of this was told that Wise's DVD version is going to be fast, colourful and a lot more fun and coherent than the original film version.p> In addition, the special effects work done by 'Voyager' effects house Foundation Imaging apparently includes redoing a number of effects completely, in order to serve Wise's edit of the film better." --From TrekToday.com This got me thinking about other films being redone for DVD. Is this craze for new versions good or bad? I feel in the middle about it. New versions are fun, but I feel we are loosing something if the only version available is a reedit of a classic. That os why I love Special Editions with multipl verions like The Abyss, Stargate, and ID4. (although the extra stuff for ID4 is mega lame except for a few character things. While a new edit or the Motionless Picture isn't a show stopping tragedy, I feel at if the orginial or the mega-extended version is available we would be losing something. I hope for a disc with seamless-branching, but this reedit doesn't sound like it would lend to two easy to branch versions. Unless it is a minor reedit like added scenes and stuff like that. Or am I just not knowledgeable enough to know it is possible? |

Exactly what I was thinking when I read that, we loved(liked?) the movie we saw, we don't need a new version,..
I love new versions too, but not at the expense of the origanal cut too Like ET, fine do a new cut (edit out the guns Mr 'Saving Private Ryan') but let us have the origanal cut too another reason that the T2 DVD is a must buy |
