Aspect ratio question on Shane

One of my favorite movies, the classic western Shane, is listed on Amazon with a release date of August 15. I haven't been able to get into the dvdfile.com database to confirm it, but for the time being I will take their word for it. I wanted to check and make sure the correct aspect ratio was on the disc, so I looked it up on imdb.com. imdb lists it as having a 1.37:1 "negative ratio" and a 1.66:1 "intended ratio." Can anyone tell me what those two terms mean? Which is the one I should look for on the disc? Also, the aspect ratio isn't listed on Amazon, so if anyone knows what it will be, please post it. Thanks!

...1.66:1 sounds about right for a Paramount film of that vintage - anything 'wider' would be 'iffy' at best. In fact, even 'full frame' would be ok, since this movie came out in 1953 (Paramount didn't bring out their proprietary VistaVision widescreen process until White Christmas - 1954)...

I believe the upcoming DVD is going to be full frame, 1:33, which means they're eithering opening up the picture at the top and bottom somehow (I'm not sure how the film was shot, so I can't be specific), or they're cutting off a bit from the side, but either way, it's not going to be something that the eye would notice unless you're going out of your way to look for it.

I don't know for sure, but I've surmised that negative ratio refers to how it was filmed, and intended ratio refers to in-theater matting.

So from what you have said, I gather I can be reasonably sure I will be getting a transfer that is reasonably close to what the director originally intended. That is indeed a relief, so thank you!
